Soda on the Pier - Forest Pier (drawn 30th nov. 2024 - 3rd jan. 2025)
Aooh needs a break after all that traveling... and hey theres a vending machine there!
ARTIST YAPPING:
this one took quite a while to finish, mostly thanks to the trees in the back... i could have even spent more time on it but it was getting tedious so im just gonna call it done!
the reason i decided to draw this location was mostly due to it being the VM on YNO when i started. there were a few people there and i got the idea to draw Aooh there.
might update this yapping later to imclude more details... kinda tired right now though--

Eyeball Bomb (drawn 30/nov/2024)
Aooh's first experience with the Eyeball Bomb effect doesnt go very well...
ARTIST YAPPING:
this doodle was mostly inspired by my desire to give my interpretation of Aooh some more lore. the idea is that after Aooh leaves ahogeko's house and explores for a while, Aooh finds the eyeball bomb effect and attempts to use it, and ends up freaking out for a multitude of different reasons, but mostly because blowing up is kinda scary.
i was originally just gonna try and draw multiple different interpretations of Aooh equipping the eyeball bomb effect, but the first one i drew ended up sticking (the left doodle) just because i liked it a lot. instead i ended up experimenting with Aooh actually using the effect.
i knew i wanted Aooh to have a bit of a freak-out trying to use it, so that also let me mess around even more with warping and glitching Aooh's appearence while an effect equipped, which i think works pretty well with the eyeball bombe effect.

More effects for Aooh (drawn 29/nov/2024)
messing around with giving Aooh more 2kki effects; Wolf, Marginal, Polygon, & Rainbow!
ARTIST YAPPING:
these were drawn past midnight on the 30th, so technically the date is incorrect, but i wouldnt really count it as a day passing until i actually fall asleep.
had the image in my mind of Aooh with the wolf effect for a while before i ended up doodling these, and at some point just kinda decided to doing it.
after doodling the wolf effect though i had the idea pop in my head of Aooh finding the Maginal Vivid Worker, and having a negative reaction to the effect after realising what the effect actually was. i ended up doodling that idea in 3 parts to draw Aooh both normally and with a warped appearance while the effect equiped. i also took the opportunity to doodle the Marginal Vivid Worker for fun.
after that i still had some creative juice left in me, so i ended up doodling the polygon and rainbow effect. the rainbow effect's colors were taken from an image someone sent in a discord server of an "inverted rainbow", which i ended up liking a lot. the rainbow effect doodle also ended up becoming an emote!;

i definitely plan on drawing more effects, i love trying to interpret effects on a character so wildly different from Urotsuki.

Stargazing - Usugurai Residence (drawn 26/nov/2024 - 28/nov/2024)
Usugurai Residence was added to Yume 2kki and the moment it was i just had to draw Aooh there... so i did!
ARTIST YAPPING:
i was immediately drawn to this world the first time i saw it, the juxtposition of simple line-art and photobashing was really appealing to me, and i immediately wanted to draw it myself. this artwork is probably my favourite out of all the ones iv drawn so far, its also the most recently completed one.
one of my favourite parts of this art is the photobashing, which i think is explained best by the name of the technique; photo-bashing. almost all of the fine detail in this one is done through overlaying photos with different blend-modes and effects, im especially happy with the ground texture and the sky, i think those parts came out really nicely.
this artwork was also my... SECOND attempt at actually trying to incorperate perspective in some form, my first attempt trying to work with perspective didnt go so well, not because it was bad but rather because i was trying to draw a rather complicated location; Adabana Gardens.
i tried to be precise about it, but i had no idea what i was really doing, so i just kinda gave up. Usugurai Residence got added to 2kki a couple days after my attempt of drawing Adabana Gardens so i fully dropped it in favour of the new location.
the way i got around the perspective troubles for my second attempt was to intentionally be less precise about it; focusing on the angles more than the distances and sizes of things, eyeballing those aspects instead.
in this early sketch (you can tell i did this before the lantern doodles!) you can actually see what im talking about; theres a lot of "perspective lines" across the whole image, they all roughly converge at vanishing points that make sense, but the lines are random distances apart from one another. this technique leaves no real sense of scale but i honestly quite like that. this is now my current technique for doing perspective.

Aooh-doodles; Lantern effect & warped appearences (drawn 27/nov/2024 - 28/nov/2024)
ARTIST YAPPING:
so i was midway through working on my fourth proper artwork involving Aooh, when i realised that i actually had no idea how to draw a lantern.
the location of my fourth artwork was the newly added nexus world; Usugurai Residence, which is actually a dark world that requires the lantern effect. when i first started drawing Aooh i knew i wanted to mess with effects at some point, so this ended up being a good opportunity to experiment with the idea.
the lower row of artworks were drawn on the 27th (technically the 28th as it was past midnight but idc), mostly just to see if i could draw a lantern at all. the upper 3 Aooh doodles were drawn the next day to experiment with a semi-related idea involving fear. in the game, Aooh has multiple different appearences which i had mostly ignored up until now.
i think i came up with a pretty cool interpretation of this, where this warping is caused by fear or anxiousness. the idea is that Aooh's appearence gets more and more warped and chaotic the more afraid they are; exacerbated the more sudden it is.
i really like this interpretation because it speaks to me personally as someone who gets scared and startled by a lot of little things. i also love it because it opens up a lot of opportunities and potential for making Aooh as expressive as possible without the use of words, as i like to interpret Aooh as mute.

Aooh and the Green Creature - Transmission Tower World (drawn 12/nov/2024 - 14/nov/2024)
Aooh found a friend deep in the dream world... not sure how Aooh's gonna drink that but im sure they'll find a way.
ARTIST YAPPING:
this artwork was actually a little bit tricky, mostly thanks to the floor, i ended up taking a lot of shortcuts that probably worsened the final product. theres also a few perspective-related issues that kinda make it feel messy...
im still quite proud of it though, the green creature came out quite good i think! i really like the original room in the game, if theres any area i end up re-drawing, it'll probably be this one.

Aooh visits Samishii - Grayscale Mountain Ring (11/nov/2024)
shortly after drawing Aooh leaving Ahogeko's house in False Shoal, i asked the Yume Nikki Online discord server where i should draw Aooh next... Grayscale Mountain Ring it was!
ARTIST YAPPING:
my personal motto for anything art related, whether thats music, drawing, or other mediums, is "never stop experimenting". i love this phrase so much, and hold it very close to me. seeing as i was drawing art again, i took the opportunity to experiment with art style even more than i already was, and i think it turned out pretty good!
i really like it when artists and developers mash different styles together, and i wanted to try it myself. Aooh is drawn in essentially the same was as in the False Shoal artwork, but the environment is drawn by essentially drawing a lot of small thin lines close to each other to give it a kind of- "rough drawing" feeling. i also kept the environment pure B&W (with exception of shadows) to match the actual in-game location.
because the artwork itself is based on the in-game location, i actually didnt use screenshots as my references, but rather just afk'd in the location, using the actual game itself as my reference. this technique of using the game as the reference is actually pretty useful i think, being able to move around let me build a much more cohesive map of an area, which is much more apparent in my later artworks.

Aooh leaves the house - False Shoal (drawn 9/nov/2024 - 10/nov/2024)
After drawing my first couple of Aooh-doodles i had the idea of taking Aooh; a character that's basically just a yume-nikki reference, and drawing them in different 2kki locations for fun. of course i had to start with the location directly adjacent of the original Aooh-event; False Shoal!
ARTIST YAPPING:
this artwork marks the end of a really long hiatus on drawing art like this, i've doodled random things here n there but the last time i actually "finished" a project like this was probably years ago at this point...
this artwork is definitely not the best, its rough in many places, but i think it was a good start to drawing 2kki fanart. it was also fun getting to use photography, blending modes, and layer clipping to introduce some really neat details, especially the water and sky here.
it was also kinda fun adding in extra references not found in-game to the sketch, the twin mountains in the background and the weird black cone werent in the original game, but i included them because i felt like it.
the twin mountains themselves are a 2kki motif so that doesnt really need an explanation, but the black top is actually a reference to a Sevish track! the colors are the wrong way around but i like the video for that song so i kept it in.

first set of Aooh-doodles (drawn 9/nov/2024 - 11/nov/2024)
this is the first time i started drawing Aooh, i honestly forget why i originally did it... i think part of it was just cuz i found the design of the character interesting.
ARTIST YAPPING:
the bottom two artworks were drawn first, using the in-game sprite & wallpaper as a reference. i found out later that i actually interpreted the sprite a bit incorrectly but ill get to that later.
a bit after that i drew the middle doodle, i drew this one mostly because i was curious on how i'd express movement with Aooh's strange anatomy. both this doodle and the lower two were drawn in one day.
two days later i ended up getting a bit curious, and drew the top two doodles to see if i could "standardize" my interpretation of Aooh's sprite. i think this is part of why i drew Aooh in the first place, the character design is really REALLY cool, and im really happy with how i interpreted it; especially stuff like the crack that almost serves as an Uboa reference, and the fact that only one hand is connected to the rest of the body, while the other one just floats around.
this was after i had found out that Aooh's sprite is actually contained inside a black-blob thing, and i was drawing Aooh without it.

i decided to actually keep that detail out of it because i found the anatomy much more interesting to work with.
