no, but the soft way Mensah looks at Murderbot when she realizes what the show means to it is so important to me

it's such a great moment of acceptance and understanding that it makes my heart ache. she could have dismissed it as stupid or even selfish but then she actually looks at what is happening and because she's such an empathetic person she understands. she understands that Murderbot is trying its best to help in the only way it knows how and in doing so, it's letting itself be vulnerable without even realizing it

like here is this person who's struggling with personhood and all its complexities and pitfalls, who's found profound comfort in something so seemingly trivial. Murderbot is just as stressed as Mensah is and it ends up being more comforted by the show but how fucking cute is it that Mensah finds her own comfort in her fondness for it in that moment

and of course it's refreshing to see a character's special interests or hyperfixations or whatever you want to call them not be looked down upon for once. yes, Mensah was angry at it at first but that's before she realized the full scope of what this means to Murderbot. and the whole sentiment of 'it doesn't matter what I think of it, it matters what it means to you' is on point

3- aw Sanctuary Moon is basically an anxiety coping tool for Murderbot, very explicitly in the show it seems

4- “I’m a big bad Murderbot, Doctor Mensah, I am clearly superior to- *faceplant*” -Murderbot. Right before it keeled over dramatically 😅😅😅

5- Gurathin all like “you have my sympathy… but also my deepest suspicion” and honestly same

6- ah, knew it.

7- oh is that all she needs to do? Cut out a bit of your spinal cord? No big deal 😳 (Very big deal but Mensah is a baddie who can do it scared, I believe in her 💪🏻)

8- ✨Gross!✨ but I like how they’re really building out the bond that Murderbot and Mensah cultivate in the books (although in a different set of circumstances in the show)

10- aaaaaah. Yeah. Not the best move MurderBot, even if she did have a gun to Gurathin’s head. But also… I don’t remember it killing people like that in the books (even human Targets, though I could be remembering wrong), but this version of Murderbot IS a lot more newly rogue I suppose…

I LOVE that TV Mensah is like “DO IT SCARED!” She’s incredibly brave and badass for that.

Surprised at the absolutely rancid takes I am seeing from some book fans about the show's portrayal of Dr. Mensah.

"The book is good representation because the black leader is strong and stoic and everyone respects her! Nobody respects the tv version of Dr. Mensah!"

Dr. Mensah is also strong in the show. All of the characters in the show respect her. None of them think she's weak.

True, the show version of her is not perfectly stoic, but nobody from Preservation is. The show went out of its way to portray Preservation as a culture that values emotional intelligence and empathy and honesty and vulnerability. This is a culture that views emotional repression as a character flaw, not a character strength.

Dr. Mensah has all of the qualities that her culture respects. She is not stoic because her culture does not value or respect stoicism.

"Giving her an panic attacks makes her look week and pathetic!How dare they make a black woman look weak and pathetic! It's racist!"

Oh. I get it. So when you said nobody respects her, you meant that you don't respect her. Because you're abelist.

Yes, she has panic attacks. And she faces her fears and makes hard decisions and does what needs to be done while having those panic attacks. That doesn't look weak and pathetic. That looks brave and admirable.

I have been watching youtube reaction videos of the tv series. Most of the people making those videos haven't read the books. And I'm not seeing people who are new to the fandom looking down on Dr. Mensah. They're not comparing her to the book version and they don't fine her lacking as she's presented.

In fact, they're talking about what a badass Dr. Mensah is for going in and rescuing MB by attacking that hostile secunit with a mining drill.

They think the fact that she overcame an anxiety order to do it makes her even more badass.

If you find it impossible to respect black female characters who have vulnerabilities and flaws and show emotion, then I think you're in no position to be calling other people racist.

The rest of the tv fandom doesn't seem to have your problem.

1- what…. Is this weird speculation about Murderbot’s potential sex parts 🤨 I do not like this addition. Although I do understand it’s supposed to be funny.

2- Sigh, it’s official. I don’t love what they’re doing with Ratthi’s character 😔 other than him calling Murderbot their friend. Which is very Ratthi.

3- Gurathin KNOWS 😳 oh dear

4- Seccy 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 okay I forgive their portrayal of Ratthi.

5- this Deltfall person is so sus 😑

6- I hope they aren’t gearing up to make Gurathin romantically interested in Mensa. I know there was the whole pillow smelling thing, but I was hoping that would just be a comfort thing. 😑 one of the things I APPRECIATE about Murderbot Series is the lack of romance.

7- ACK! Somehow wasn’t expecting an explosion since that’s not how it went down in the books 😅 well. The explody circumstance were different in any case.

The beauty of Murderbot being such an unreliable narrator in the books is that it is actually 100% plausible MB was hallucinating a self-insert Sanctuary Moon fanfic the entire time it was being rescued and left those details out of its narrative because they were too embarrassing.

I imagine that for MB, realizing it accidentally called Mensah "captain" out loud to her face like some star-struck ensign is a humiliation on par with a high school student realizing they accidentally called their favorite teacher "mom."
