Note
Hi! I was wondering how you go about finding references and resources to brainstorm with or use within your papers. As in, when you have an essay question, how do you go about finding appropriate and relevant reference material? Do you have specific places you visit or use to acquire these resources? Thank you for your time and have a great day! :)
On writing essays, part i
On writing essays, part ii
I think essay questions – particularly at university-level – are supposed to act as training for research methods, so everyone develops a different process.
‘The student can meander, alternating his objectives, provided that a thick web of personal notes, possibly in the form of index cards, keeps track of these “adventurous” wanderings.’
Umberto Eco, How to Write a Thesis (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2015), p. 103.
Eco provides an extremely detailed method for conducting research (even imagining himself as a student with limited access to resources) so I recommend reading his book for in-depth advice. My process is:
When reading primary texts, even for the first time, bookmark and note interesting passages that raise questions or thoughts related to the essay topic.
Find an introductory text on the topic (go to the library and look for books on the topic, or just search online) and read it, thinking about how it applies to the primary texts, again making notes.
If another relevant writer (critic) is referenced, note their name and/or the text and find it to read. If they reference another critic, do the same again until I have built some knowledge of what has been written already.
Tumblr media
Above: list of names cited in an essay by Paolo Virno. The index is a helpful way to figure out who the dominant and frequently-cited critics are on a particular topic.
Then go to journals for more specific, contemporary reading. Example: if the topic were related to food, I would look at Appetite or Gastronomica. These can be accessed at libraries or through sites like JSTOR.
If I’m stuck I will just keep searching online for books and articles related to the topic until I find something interesting.
That’s as far as I would usually go, except when I’ve written on something like art – exhibition catalogues, documentaries and other specialist texts are very useful.
Hope this helps. : - )

in which i recommend books like the netflix algorithm
you wanted it, you got it, babes! caveat: this list is long (seriously, sorry about the length) and i can’t write blurbs for everything, but i highly recommend going and looking at anything that sounds interesting. some books will fall under multiple headings, so i’m listing them twice. i am linking to their purchase pages on bookshop.org, because amazon sucks and bookshop helps support indie booksellers, but if your local indie bookstore offers delivery or curbside pickup, buy it there. and i’m trying to keep this list confined to pretty recent titles, so even though a few older ones might slip in there, it’s definitely centered on releases from the past few years. okay let’s do this.

Open Latin resources
via: https://openlatin.org/open-latin-resources/
Many Open Latin resources already exist—they are the foundation of the modern revival of Latin. Here are some highlights.
Public domain
The Latin public domain is vast. Transcription projects make much of this easily available and resuable, from texts through to dictionaries. Scans of texts can be found at Google Books, Archive.org and Europeana.
Many texts have been transcribed by volunteers, including:
Wikisource Latin aims to transcribe public domain Latin texts, including historical texts and those aimed at learners.
Gutenberg.org offers some learner texts
Perseus offers dictionaries and texts
Belgian University of Louvain offers many plain text transcriptions.
The Latin Library has a vast array of Latin transcriptions
Community resources
The Internet has brought us many new Open licenced Latin resources. Most famous is Vicipaedia, but there are many others:
Tatoeba Latin includes over 36,000 Latin sentences written by volunteers.
Wikiversity has a beginner Latin course.
Wikibooks has a complete Latin textbook, and other shorter Latin learner texts.
Wiktionary has over 36,000 Latin entries.
Collatinus is Open Source software that analyses Latin text for morphology (lemmas) and syllable quantity.
Many Youtube channels are licenced as CC-BY – which means you can download, remix and use their work, so long as you credit them. Famous examples include:
Ancient Literature Dude licences all his recitals as CC-By
Gaius Annaeus Iacobus releases his recordings as CC-By.
Musa Pedestris has released some of her recent recitals as CC-BY
Quomodo Dicitur have all their recordings as CC-By.
Please check each Youtube video for the CC licence before you reuse it. It can be found in the information panel.
Commercial resources
Open Content allows commercial follow-on development. Some prominent examples include:
Clozemaster.com and The Great Translation Game, reusing Tatoeba sentences
Public domain texts are presented in Latin course materials at Lingq.com
Many teachers provide reworkings of public domain materials; prominent among these are Latinitium, Latinum Institute, Satura Lanx and Scorpio Martianus.
There is of course a huge range of commercial book publishers also republishing public domain texts.
Our content
We are working on a handful of transcription projects, aimed at Latin learners. Let us know if you want to help, or want us to help with your project.
Wikiversity Latin for Beginners course: first, we asked CarpeLanam for her permission to republish her course from Duolingo’s forums. Then we added vowel length markers as macrons and some simple audio from Wiktionary. Now we are providing new excercises from the content on different platforms.
Jánua Linguárum Reseráta; we transcribed, added accent markers for long vowels and updated the translation. We also asked permission from another transcriber, Tym Marsh, to publish his edition with notes.
We also asked permission to publish Tym’s Corderii Colloquia, transcription
We transcribed the very excellent and until now lost Ólim plays by Effie Ryle.
We transcribed Cothvrnvlvs, plays for learners by Edward Vernon Arnold.
We transcribed Easy Latin Stories by George Bennet.
We have taken the plain text copies of Erasmus’s Colloquia, to present them as a downloadable ebook. The first of two volumes is 70% complete.
Content suggested by friends
These are transcriptions and works particularly for learners that friends of the project have suggested to us
Here are some “Direct Method” books for teachers and learners.
Primus Annus, by Walter Lionel Paine, and Cyril Lyttleton Mainwaring at Gutenberg.
Fabulae, virginibus puerisque aut narrandae aut recitandae by Reginald Bainbridge Appleton, at Gutenberg
Puer Romanus, by Reginald Bainbridge Appleton and William Henry Samuel Jones, at Gutenberg

Masterpost: How to Begin Studying Philosophy
I get a lot of messages from people interested in beginning their education in philosophy - this is a masterpost for people who might ask that daunting question. From here you get to choose your own adventure. You can jump right into a philosophy book that you’re interested in, listen to podcasts, read a comic book, take an online class. Find what works for you. As with everything, you have to start somewhere.
Books
General Philosophy - Meditations by Descartes, The Apology by Plato, The Anti-Christ/Birth of Tragedy by Nietzsche, An Inquiry Concerning Human Nature by Hume, The Problems of Philosophy by Russell, Meditations by Aurelius
Ethics - Famine Affluence Morality by Singer, Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle,  Utilitarianism by Mill
Political Philosophy - The Republic by Plato, On Liberty by Mill, The Prince by Machiavelli , The Social Contract by Rousseau
Environmental Ethics - Sand County Almanac by Leopold, Animal Liberation by Singer, The Ethics of Climate Change by Garvey
Existentialism - Existentialism is a Humanism and Existentialism and Human Emotion by Sartre, Myth of Sisyphus by Camus
Eastern Philosophy - Bhagvad Gita, Tao Te Ching (the Laozi), The Art of War by Tzu
Students of Philosophy protip - if you’re reading a book, it’s a good idea to have that book in print so you can actively read. Mark your philosophy books up with a highlighter, underline, take notes in the margins. Most philosophy books can be found on Amazon for pennies or at discount bookstores.
Philosophy in Literature (these are stories heavily imbued with philosophy)
Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche, The Stranger by Camus, All Men are Mortal by de Beauvoir, any of Plato’s dialogues actually, Siddhartha by Hesse, Under the Net by Murdoch, No Exit by Sartre, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (philosophical autobiography)
Overview Books
(books to give you a general overview of philosophy but that aren’t persay a “philosophy” book)
History of Western Philosophy by Russell*
From Socrates to Sartre
Sophie’s World (also a fictional story)
Doing Philosophy by Gerald Rochelle (”how” to “do” philosophy)
Students of Philosophy protip - reading a “history of philosophy” book that goes through various philosophers and trends in philosophy will help direct you towards what you’re interested in and is Bar’s recommended platform for learning philosophy, even if it isn’t the most fun method
* This is the book I see most often recommended for beginning an education in philosophy.
Other Mediums to Learn by
Learning by Listening and Watching
Crash Course in Philosophy (Hank Green PBS youtube series)
Partially Examined Life podcast (roundtable discussion about philosophical ideas, accessible for beginners)

french resources masterpost
i don’t even know where to begin with french…i love learning languages so much, i really wish my parents had started me when i was younger. i started taking french in seventh grade but i really hope to spend a semester abroad in france & visit senegal when im older. however, french can get super crazy with accents and hard pronunciation and fancy vocab, which can get really confusing, so here’s a masterpost w all of the french resources i’ve gathered :)
where to start
duolingo aka the most amazing free language learning program ever
rosetta stone- i’ve heard really great things about this program, but it is not free
bonjour- this website is rlly helpful & even if you’re already in a french class like me, you can find lots of resources for when you’re confused :) plus it’s free!!
babbel- they have programs for beginners + advanced
grammar + spell check
bonpatron-  grammer + spell check
languagetool- grammar + spell check
reverso- grammer + spellcheck
how to change the spellcheck language on word
dictionaries
collins
word reference (this is my personal favorite, i highly recommend it + it is so much better than google translate & much more reliable!!)
larousse
linternaute
linguee (this one is probably my second favorite)
you can get word reference (free!!) on the app store, as well as linguee (which i think is free as well??)
phonology
french vs english phonology
french pronunciation for beginners
pronunciation chart
guide to french pronunciation
exercises you could try
+ more practice
the ultimate guide to french pronunciation w videos!!
10 pronunciations you won’t learn in school
ok so i just found out the other day that if you’re on flashcards on quizlet & you press the little speaker icon it will say the word for you!! this has been super helpful on my auditory quizzes + generally getting a feel for the pronunciation of words. but i wouldn’t say it’s too reliable so definitely check out these other resources (link to quizlet)
grammar
passe compose help (past tense)
passe compose w/ avoir
passe compose w/ etre
passe compose practice (+ more)
imparfait vs passe compose
a helpful post explaining imparfait vs passe compose
intro to accents
type french accents w/o a french keyboard (just copy/paste into your document)
how to put accents on letters
noun gender
7 tips on learning french grammar
grammar practice
conjugation practice
how to conjugate
french grammar masterpost
music
these are a few of my favorites:
stromae- hip hop//electronic but i still like his music
maitre gims- rapper but he sings quite a bit in his songs
joyce jonathan- omg her songs are so cute please go listen
christophe mae-can we just talk about his song “tombe sous le charme” i love it + he sort of reminds me of jack johnson
vianney!!- guys “je te deteste” is my favorite song on my french playlist right now. the sophomore that sits next to me in our french class recommended him to me & i can’t stop listening
christine & the queens
also check out these links for more music:
universal music france
this post with french music recommendations
my post on music//podcasts for learning languages (lots of people have been recommending artists which has made this post so much better so please message me if you have any other recommendations or questions!!)
8tracks- french music
other stuff to listen to//watch
french youtubers
10 podcasts for french learners
the ten best tv shows to watch for french learners
ok don’t throw anything at me but watching peppa pig in french is actually a good method (i don’t remember who suggested this to me but thank you so much @ whoever it was)
easy to understand french movies
news + culture
savoirs
euronews
1jour1actu
l’humanite
multilingual books
some blogs (not on tumblr) in french + about french culture (frenchcrazy, i learn french, oui, c’est ca, french together, fluentfrenchnow)
my tips
definitely keep a vocab notebook where you can either paste vocab lists or write them in on your own
listen to french music. find your own favorite artists. and tell me, so i can put them in here. but seriously, go do it & get those phrases + pronunciations stuck in your head!!
making quizlets for vocab will benefit you more than just using someone else’s
find friends in your class to help (if you’re in highschool, upperclassmen are a blessing pls go ask them questions if you’re lost in class), the senior that sits next to me is really good at conjugating, and i’m pretty good at remembering vocab so we make a great team
find/join a study group!! the freshman girls in my french class made a group chat & we all send links to quizlets/other resources & help each other with homework 24/7
ask questions/do speaking exercises during class. trust me, you will benefit from it. plus, having your teacher correct you on your pronunciation during class is much less embarrassing than getting an F on that speaking test

so as an aspiring classicist (slash medievalist) i like roman history A Lot, and i read about it A Lot, and over time i’ve come up with A Lot of reliable resources for studying it.
online:
ancient history encyclopedia
fordham ancient history sourcebook (rome)
fordham ancient history sourcebook (byzantium)
de imperatoribus romanis
illustrated history of the roman empire
ancient sources:
the history of rome (livy) - covers from rome’s (obscure, semimythological) early history all the way up to the reign of augustus. long, dull, but relatively worth it.
lives of the twelve caesars (suetonius) - deals with the lives of julius caesar through to emperor domitian. fair warning: people don’t call suetonius an ancient gossip columnist for nothing, so take him with a grain of salt.
annals (tacitus) - reign of tiberius to reign of nero, everyone loves this one.
de bello gallico (julius caesar) - caesar’s own record of his campaign in gaul, aka roman war propaganda. short but important part of roman history.
books:
i’ve read most of these and been recommended the rest, but they reflect my own interest in specific subjects. you can find a more comprehensive list here.
rubicon (tom holland)
a history of rome (m. cary and h.h. scullard)
the roman republic (michael crawford)
who’s who in the roman world (john hazel)
spqr (mary beard)
the classical world (robin lane fox)
cicero (anthony everitt)
audio:
the history of rome (mike duncan)
the history of byzantium

Masterpost of Videos in Latin
This is my very long list of online videos in which people speak Latin. It is occasionally updated, and if you have links to contribute, feel free to add them. I hope this is helpful to any bored Latin-speakers or anyone who wants to practice listening to and understanding Latin. I wrote this masterpost in English because I thought it would be accessible to more people who are not confident in their active Latin skills yet. The videos vary widely in quality, difficulty, and content, but they all have some Latin audio.
Update: this is kind of turning into a masterpost of audio input in Latin, but I don’t really care. I might also get rid of some of the really bad videos.
Lectures
Vivarium Novum youtube channel
AthenaeumIllustre
Videos from “ArcesseEum” with the heading [Latin Lecture] in their titles
Baeticus2
Santiago Campo
Óscar Ramos
Rodrigo Portela
Paideia Media
Example Conversations and Similarly Scripted Videos
Auspicia (a reconstruction of an ancient ritual)
Everyday conversation
Latin Language Spoken Examples #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5
Dialogues in Classical Latin #1 and #2
Wyoming Catholic College: Colloquia Personarum
Dialogi primus et tertius, Schola aestiva 2014
Salve
Lingua Latina 102
De Casula ex Crustulis…
Many others, which are not likely to be much use due to a poor quality of Latin, video, and/or audio, have been left out.
Texts Read Aloud
“Fiatlapides”
“ThePrinceSterling”
Videos from “ArcesseEum” with the heading [Latin Reading] in their titles
Ora Maritima Sonnenschein’s Story told in simple Latin
Latin Audio page on Indwelling Language
Aeneid 4, read by Valafridus Stroh
Many more video and audio readings of Latin texts and textbooks are available online, but I have left it at this because they are much easier to find than videos in some of the other categories.
Singable Music
The musical ensemble Tyrtarion at Vivarium Novum does musical arrangements of ancient poems. (Some other, more mediocre recordings of their concerts are also lurking on youtube.)
Aprilis Albuquerquensis also sings Latin poetry
Arte Factum’s arrangements of In Taberna quando sumus, Bache Bene Venies, Tempus est Iocundum, and Bulla Fulminante
Many of #EnsembleMicrologus’ songs, medieval and modern-styled, are in Latin.
The Escorts - Gaudeamus
Look at wikipedia’s list of songs with Latin lyrics! Some of the songs there are great.
Translations of Modern Things
These Pop Culture Latin videos (the Latin is not great)
Disney Songs - Classical Latin Playlist (the Latin is not great)
I’ll Make a Man Out of You (again, the Latin is not great)
One Upon a December

Salvete Omnes! Thought I’d make a latin masterpost as I wasn’t sure how many resources there were on tumblr for latin…? Just some tips and resources for ppl starting out! Any questions, feel free to ask me!
THIS IS A POST for ppl starting out, currently learning click here (once i get round to it eep sorry EDIT : I’m sorry but I don’t think I will be able to get round to it any time soon :( ! If you have any questions though as a current learner, send me an ask like ‘yo i’m learning latin, any tips’ and i’ll pop down a few pointers! I just don’t have much time to make a proper master post sorry <3
Some tips and resources for you lovelies
Cambridge Latin course (the main textbooks I used in my five years of Latin) have some free online resources here that complement their course but might be worth checking out as a taster! Stories and such for translation! (all words have a translation so that saves time for ppl just starting though I don’t recommend relying on it if you want to build up your vocab)
You don’t have to learn how to speak it [no speaking exams i think if you wanna take it for a qualification] but general tips: C is said like a K eg. cepit (he/she/it threw) is not said sepit , it’s said kepit (this is actually really annoying because julius caesar = see-zerr in my mind yet technically it should be more like kaiser i know weird)
Harry Potter cool stuff! Like ‘Expecto Patronum’ = I wait for/expect a patron/protector and it’s v. cool because patronus is the normal form and patronum is the accusative form as the ‘waiting’ is being done to it. Languages are cool. [Sibyls were oracles so Sibyll Trelawny makes sense!] [Also there’s a latin version of HP so.]
No capital letters expect for names!! So that makes them easy to recognise!! :)
Tenses and declensions are v. important in latin!! Word order doesn’t make a great difference in terms of translation (though verb tends to go at end of a sentence) so you gotta know and learn your tenses and declensions.
[O   S   T   MUS   TIS    NT] reciting tenses out loud is very useful for remembering! We had to recite the present, imperfect, perfect tenses at the start of each lesson
Declensions are these cool things that sort things into families (bit like french but easier tbh) - you can recognise which declension from the ending of the word most times (gen rules : 1st declension female, 2nd male, 3rd the whatever they want pot)
Derivations are your friend! e.g. canis = dog aka canine, hortus = garden aka horticulture! Helpful for remembering vocab! Make links in your brain and the meaning will follow!
A website that I found that seems legit and a good starting point for ppl who have need some structure as to where to start ALSO THEIR REFERENCE CHARTS!!! IMPORTANT!!!
If you know a romance language, like spanish + french, then you might see links between the languages! like the verb être in french has a similar pattern to esse (to be) in latin. Useful for reinforcing both languages (and latin is the root of these languages so… :D)
As with any language, practice practice!!!
Another website that links some good resources [not all of them work as bit outdated – with this though as long as links work, the stuff won’t be ‘incorrect’ because it’s old… like latin is v. old language lol don’t worry]
Handouts on grammar, vocab etc that I wish I had had… the exercises (scroll down!!!!) may be interesting for self learners!!
Also, don’t worry about ë / ē (dots and lines over words) they’re mainly to help with speaking and you don’t need to consider them when trying to learn to read latin
ALSO WRITING LATIN IS RATHER COMPLICATED (easy sentences are manageable, just don’t try to write essays XD) STICK TO TRANSLATING TEXTS  FIRST to build up your vocab and get your grammar good!!
Latin wiktionary  This is in latin and kind of intimidating but you can always just bathe in the beauty that is the latin language.
Here is a vocab tester [and also gives free rice for every correct answer what’s not to like]
A very neat website (linked to main page because it also has also ancient languages resources if you are interested) that has resource lists [way better than any i could make and also gives a description of the resource ] that you should check out!! [again where WAS THIS when i was learning latin…? obviously didn’t use all the resources i could have had access to *grrrr*]
Okay this post is getting long! I’ll make a post for ppl currently learning and link it here (I might repeat some info/resources listed on this post but there will be a different focus)
