(Short Hiatus)

(I’ll be going on a college tour this week, so I’ll be back Sunday morning, if not Saturday afternoon. I don’t think I have any RPs going on with anyone other than Rem, so it’s just a heads up, in that case. Just letting you guys know.)

“I know…” Guilt flashed across her face and she stepped away from him as soon as she was hobbling on her heels again. It was replaced by sadness as she noticed the crushed daisies still discarded in the dirt. She kneeled back down and gently picked them up, fondling them as if they were her own glass baby. She knew she wouldn’t be able to get back up easily from where she was now, so she remained there, mourning over the dead flowers.

"Here. I'll help." He guided her hand, helping her dig a little deeper. "I think that should be enough, don't you?" He piled the dead ones in, pushing the dirt over them. "Want to say a few words, Rem?"

He frowned, running back and forth around the area as he checked back on her every few seconds. Within ten minutes, he'd found a crop of daisies that looked much more healthy than the first and went over to her, sitting down on the other side of the flowers. "Backup." He held the new set out to her.

“I just… I can’t deal with them the way you do. …I can’t be family with someone who was responsible for me losing mine.” He glared at the ground. “And the rest just follow at his heels. I’m only here because you are and I swore that I’d spend the rest of my life protecting you. And it might have to be from them.”

"I'm sorry." He helped her up. "I'd tell you what you want to hear, but... you and I both know it isn't true. I'll try my best."

“Even if I think that the peristylium is home?” She squeezed her forearm in order to get out her repressed pain, even though it was only hurting her more in the long run.

“I wouldn’t go that far, but oh well.” He shrugged. “You’ve got to find a place for everything.”

"With you." He looked completely convinced that he was correct, as usual. "Doesn't matter where the rest of them are. I promised I'd protect you and I will."

She nodded, only to put on the serious deadpan that she always would right before delivering a line, “But the collar on it doesn’t.”

"I wouldn't go that far, but oh well." He shrugged. "You've got to find a place for everything."

Trying to be as stealthy as possible, Rem pinched the edge of Machina’s cape and draped it over her side. She was feeling a little chilly at the brush of the fall breeze and if she shivered anymore than she already was, she knew Machina would insist on returning her to her dorm.

"It works as an efficient neck guard in battle." He rolled his eyes. "Also, it's an effective shield from Nine on his spitball days."

She turned back to him and shot him a sheepish grin, “Ah, sorry… I was just thinking. But um… Whatever you’d like.”

"If you want to be warmer, just stay close." He kept walking forward, acting as if he hadn't noticed. "Besides, the cape's more purposeful than it looks, isn't it?"

“I asked what you wanted for dinner, Rem.” He smiled. “Distracted?”

"Fine, fine." He kept her close, slightly embarrassed by how forward he was being.

“I was planning to just get dinner off campus, but we can do something else too.” He instinctively put his arm around her waist to steady her, pulling her close. “What do you want?”

"I asked what you wanted for dinner, Rem." He smiled. "Distracted?"
