The mystery of the moon-eyed people of Cherokee legends
Stories of strange, nocturnal people haunt the Appalachia region, along with theories about who they were, from a lost Welsh tribe to even aliens….
Try to imagine. It’s midnight, with a dim moon high in the sky, when hundreds of little people, bearded, flat faced, and pale, with large blue eyes are hard at work atop Fort Mountain, in northern Georgia. They’re building a wall of rocks from east to west, only a few meters tall, but they hope it will protect them from the Cherokee, so much taller and stronger than themselves. Actually all…

ā›°ļø — as you may know, hurricane helene devastated appalachia. if you enjoy my blog or southern gothic aesthetic, consider contributing to the efforts to aid appalachia in these difficult times. we are one of the poorest areas of the country. we are one of the most overlooked. this was a catastrophic amount of destruction and loss. the mountains will recover, but the people here will take a little longer. generations will feel this devastation. please do what you can and take care of each other.

The original Coon Creek Girls. An all female string band of Appalachian style folk and country music.
They played often at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance Show at Mt. Vernon. But had their own gigs too, including playing at the White House on June 8, 1939 for King George Vl, Queen Elizabeth, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and First Lady Eleanor.
Lily Mae Ledford, born in Pilot, Kentucky, was the founder of the group, in the mid 1930’s.
Lily Mae’s father, White Ledford, was a well known old time fiddler. Lily Mae told the story about making her first fiddle bow from a willow branch and a ā€œgenerous potion of the tail from old Maude, grandpappy’s old white mareā€.

Every day a Palestinian dies and you send funds to Israel. Every day a Lebanese dies and you send funds to Israel. Every day a person from Appalachia, your own nation, dies and you send funds to Israel...
Fuck you.

Hey just a btw, if your leftist politics end at Appalachia because you think they ā€œdeserve itā€ for voting red, you’re not a leftist at all. Appalachia is a historically exploited region; it’s rich in resources, which should mean its residents are prosperous, but because of capitalist structures, a large sum of us are poor with fewer access to education and public resources. It’s also gerrymandered to hell and back, meaning there’s actually Much more of us voting blue than you think. Asheville, a town that was ripped apart by Hurricane Helene, is one of the most blue cities in the south. It’s known as a queer safe haven, a Seattle of the East. I cannot stress enough that minorities in the south are victims, not perpetrators, and you will find more racial minorities here than any other region of the US.
All that being said, even if everyone here was a god fearing racist sexist trumper, no one deserves to die. No one deserves to lose their homes. No one deserves displacement, starvation, or loss of their loved ones. This is fundamental to leftist politics. Human rights are for all humans.

I don't really do my own posting on here but i wanted to share some images of my home in Appalachia that is currently suffering. I love the blue ridge mountains so much and it's killing me to see my community and land hurting so much. I am very fortunate enough to have been able to evacuate but thousands are not so fortunate. Please donate or help wherever you can, it's going to take years for our roads and towns to recover.

So I haven’t really been seeing folks talk much here at all about what’s been going on with Hurricane Helene recovery- but I thought I might share something I thought was cool and important.
Because of how roads have been washed out making homes and towns inaccessible to vehicles, the Cajun Navy (organizations that performs search, rescue, and assistance during disasters) has partnered with Mountain Mule Packer Ranch to use the mules to get medications, food, and water to people in need.

I just think it’s incredible. Despite all the technology you’d think is accessible to help people out, mules are still the most reliable form of transport to save people’s lives

The governor of my state has officially declared a state of emergency as effects from Helene have ravaged the surroundings areas. Dam breaches are imminent, highways have been torn apart, bridges have collapsed, hospitals have been flooded, thousands without power, and the safe drinking water in surrounding area is now being polluted from the run off. I am so far landlocked, it’s not even funny, which makes this all the more shocking and traumatic. Y’all keep my precious Appalachia in your hearts and thoughts. 🧔
