   Appropriation Evaluation             Paul Gallagher
I took to this project with confidence, seeing it as an opportunity to enquire about the artistic approach of a great artist, after fully reading the brief I became aware of the extent of appropriation throughout art history. After some thought, I decided to focus on appropriating the methodology of the artist and not just their visual outcomes. I have become increasingly influenced by a generation of American artists that include Rauschenberg, Warhol, Johns and Twombly. It is the latter that I have decided upon, Cy Twombly. My reasons for selecting Twombly was a combination of factors, I have an interest in using text and his cursive handwriting technique is an area I would like to consider, then there is my own personal love for his sculpture work, expressively abstract, often subtle and minimal. After more research on the artist and learning about his influences I can see how passionately involved he was with his work. His process and content shows his interest in history, poetry and myth, especially Roman and Greek Mythology. He focused on his immediate surroundings, creating beauty from his emotional response to it. My next step was to find an area within Glasgow that was akin to twombly’s affection for the city of Rome, although tiny in comparison to Twombly’s Rome, the Glasgow Necropolis was somewhere that I was gaining great sentiment towards. On further inspection of the Necropolis the parallel coincidences became apparent. The Necropolis is steeped with Roman and Greek symbolism. I decided that the development for this project would be information and research based. I wanted to become personally associated and absorbed by the Necropolis. I spent days within the Mitchell Library looking through the Archives and Reference books. Being able to read through antique books, ‘Necropolis Glasguensis’ by John Strang is 188 years old. That investigation work gave me a real sense of purpose. Between appropriation and CP2 I have gained a better understanding in the use of symbolism and metaphor, the issues I faced were being able to transform these ideas into an aesthetic. One other problem I faced was space restriction within the studio, trying to produce two projects with 3d outcomes concurrently. As an artist I like to reclaim everyday objects, deconstructing and reconstructing. I like to be hands on with this approach and find a little suffering towards my outcome satisfying on completion. For this project I appropriated old cable and chicken wire, while using materials more related to the trades, like moulding plaster, gloss paint and car body filler. I am really happy with the outcome, it was important to select areas within my research that I felt profound affection towards. In this work I pay homage to the subject, like the ‘Gypsy Queen’ Kurlinda Lee. The heart-broken ‘Dr William Rae Wilson’ who travelled the world. The Jewish cemetery and its tales of dispute and the broken Roman column a deliberate metaphor that pays respect to a promising life cut short.
