I've seen posts say arguments going along the lines of "Kalim is a sheltered boy, and Deuce and Riddle are from the TWST version of England. How could they possibly know?" as justification as to why the boys didn't know what a paper lantern is. I'm sorry, I'm calling bullshit on that.

There is a difference between consciously writing ignorant characters and ones that come off as unintentionally stupid.

Take Katniss in The Hunger Games. When she and Peeta arrive in the Capitol, she’s completely blown away by the wealth, the tech, and the over-the-top luxury. Before the Games, she had no idea any of that existed. She also doesn’t know how the other districts operate. That makes sense. She grew up isolated in District 12, with barely any access to outside information. Her ignorance fits the world she lives in.

Now compare that to the paper lantern thing in TWST. There’s no excuse here. These characters live in a world with access to the internet, anime, books, and all kinds of media. You’re telling me Riddle never saw a paper lantern in one of the hundreds of books his mum forced him to read? Deuce never saw them in an anime or on TV? No diplomat ever gifted the Asims a paper lantern?

Sorry, not buying it. If this were a world like Teyvat or some other high fantasy setting where the internet doesn’t exist, then sure, I’d let it slide. But TWST is urban fantasy. There’s no in-universe reason for them to be this clueless.

Hell, why wouldn't Jack know this? He's from the Land of Pyroxene! Wouldn't he at least hear about a lantern festival honouring Rapunzel, since he's from the same country as her? (I would add Deuce in that camp since I imagine his mom to be TWST Japanese, but since that's purely headcanon at the moment, I'm not lobbing that against the story.)

I just think it's just another instance of Yana purposefully dumbing down her characters to force her plots to happen. There’s no logical explanation for their ignorance, so it ends up making them look completely out of character and kind of stupid. It just falls flat. What a waste.

Been in a bit of an art funk recently and the only thing that I felt like drawing was Vil and Jack, so I did! No matter if canon says they only spent like a year or two together, I pretend it doesn’t exist and draw them as true childhood friends 😤

I wanted the piece to feel cozy so I chose some really warm and bright colors, which I ended up really liking! They just look so sweet…might end up drawing more of them being kids and having fun…but we shall see 👀

More overblot art featuring Vil! I had the idea of the overblot offering up the Evil Queen’s box to take Vil’s heart, the last shred of his morality, in order to get him to just give in to the darkness. I had a lot of fun with the vivid colors and the framing of the composition of the piece!

Next up I’m working on another overblot piece featuring Riddle this time! I’ve also got some ideas spinning around in my mind for an overblot Leona piece…but we shall see since my birthday is coming up! 👀

One of my headcanons is that if Malleus was a real person, he would look like Dongfang Qingcang in Love Between Fairy and Devil. So I've always wanted to see an edit of Dongfang Qingcang made to look like Malleus with the horns and all.
