It's also very funny how all three of the main party in Deltora Quest are total cunts. You look at Barda like "he's the nice one cause he's like their defacto guardian" and then realize he's a catty, distrustful, dramatic mf. Then you think "oh then Lief must be the nice one. He's the hero after all" and then the narration is like "Lief wanted to kill this guy so bad but he knew he couldn't so he just seethed and malded for twelve minutes." And then Jasmine is just a complete asshole all the time. There are like two genuinely lawful-good side characters (Prin and Manus) and one of them is an actual child. Doom is a bastard. Glock is a bastard. Neridah is a bastard. Tom is a bastard. Ava is a bastard. Hell, even Steven Oftheplains is presented as really nice and you're like "finally. A normal person." Nope, he is also concerningly ok with killing people. There are no normal people on that entire dystopian continent. And it rules.

Dain is given his name by the Shadow Lord, his maker; the closest thing, he figures, he will ever have to a father. His siblings—or the closest thing he will ever have to siblings—are 3-16 and 3-18, but Dain is Dain. A name is a privilege for an Ol, he is told. It is given only in return for great responsibility. And Dain’s responsibility is greatest of all: he is the last insurance, the plan within all the plans. His personal character and appearance are designed into him, for such things would take too long to teach. But other things he must be trained in before going to his appointed task. He learns how to eat, and how to shit, and after watching live vivisections in the Factory he learns how to make his body function so that it bleeds when it is cut, and shows bone in all the right places, without his having to consciously will it. He becomes so skilled that he experiences something very unpleasant when his body is damaged. He learns that this is called ‘pain.’ He learns to produce water from his eyes when this occurs, and that it will make others pity him.

Please find below the beginning of my WIP Bad in the Blood, told from Dain POV, covering all the way up to the end of the story (someday). No idea when I’m going to finish it, so I figured I might as well post the beginning. Much character development to come after this segment ends.

Roddacember, Day 12: Relationship

Okay, but hear me out the funniest relationship in the series that really isn't explored is Paff and Joseph. She's introduced as the pathetic shrinking violet trying desperately to please her beloved mentor while he can't stand her because she's not his darling son Ranesh

but in like, reality

she must have hated him so much. Here's a guy who's led a fairly comfortable life in Del, in the palace even, ordering her around and judging her and she's got to kowtow to him while she plots and schemes. Every interaction, she was faking a customer service smile the likes of which we can only dream. She would be apologizing to him like a girl in a shojo anime while imagining exploding him in her mind. Every time he turned around she would be glaring at him hard enough to catch his clothes on fire, and then the second he looked back she'd be smiling politely again. I wish they'd gotten a chance to speak to each other honestly but also. I get why they didn't.

28 - Queen

my headcanon is that jasmine serves the people via working at the hospital, like lief works at the forge. (i have an oc that travelled and learned medicine and specialises in surgery techniques, and came home to create/update the hospital in del but thats another story)

i think it's a natural progression of her skills and a good way to be involved with the people, to do something useful and to hear from them directly. she's at the monthly meetings and she's supporting lief through everything, but this is a more hands-on approach. they get to literally see her do good work, and it's a contact point where she can form relationships with them, building trust and loyalty.

jasmine specialises in creating remedies and ointments. she's good at seeing the attributes and effects of herbs and minerals and venoms and whatnot, and can apply them to patient health quickly.

she's keeping her mother's legacy alive in her work, and extends further through her son jarred ii who is studying to be a healer.

i reckon rowan would be less bitter as the village wiseman but not without some of that 'oh my god do you really think like this? bestie what are you talking about? buddy use your brain??' because there's still ingrained prejudice and stuck in tradition even if they are more aware of their history now. it's going to be tough and he's got trauma <3

so theoretically i think the next gen might be a nice wiseperson lol bit more patient maybe even jolly. rin gandalf mayhaps. since the village next gen would be learning to embrace both sides of the story etc

honestly i think sheba is so tired of the village's bullshit by the time rowan is walking around. she's had enough!!!! she probably was also a black sheep bukshah, very observant, scared, open mind. the hardheaded no scared only courage!!! arts pathetic sport admirable!!! hardwork is all muscle not in brain!! would have been at its peak due to time by sheba and she wouldve known it was wrong. might have been mentored by her predecessor to show her the way. but the knowledge and standing on the outskirts literally and socially would have been really isolating and harrowing to the point no wonder she is pissed off about every little thing alsdkfjhas
