A Bland Ultimatum (A Reflection about the Maguindanao Massacre)
All the past years I have been living my life, I have never imagined that I would be sharing and writing my own standpoints to a dreadful occurrence happened to my fellow countrymen and to my country, which I realized that, this is now my biggest adversary, and forever will be. On the morning of the 23rd day of November 2009, the world, not only the Philippines, was shocked after the news has been scattered telling that 58 men were killed in the province of Maguindanao. A convoy of media-men and relatives of a candidate for Governor were gunned down; several women were raped and pregnant women were killed then buried them down on a mass grave using a back-hoe truck. This is said to be the single deadliest event in history and marked the Philippines as the second (to Iraq) deadliest place for Journalists in the world. A journalism practitioner like me would require first keen observations and watchful perspectives to things that have been occurred, occurs and will occur if planning to engage into this world of suppression.  I was once an ignorant to my own country’s experiences especially when it comes to media. I never thought that being a truth-deliverer might demand the highest form of sacrifice – life – until this macabre phenomenon happened. Truth be told, the deaths of media men came after the following years, with or without the involvement of the politics or businesses. These just prove that truth is being oppressed in this country even up to this day. And as a Journalist, I have been thinking a lot of defending and securing the so-called truth which is highly needed and deserved by everyone; maybe it is a cliché if I would say, but as l continue to love this profession, I just knew that truth doesn’t need someone or something or somebody to defend itself, we should let it loose and it will defend itself. Threats, suppressions, and other deep crisis have always been there and forever would be there for a journalist me. But as a media man, these things that are supposed to bring me to death or would tear me down are also the things that inspire me to look for the truth which is highly needed to be parceled out among people especially to my beloved Filipinos and this mean that this country needs people like me to look for the truth and protect it from the suppressors. I am now no stranger to things that would make me refrain from doing kinds of stuff involving politics, science, religion, facts, whereabouts, and things that might lead me to danger. Journalism is not about writing things I like, it is not about showing that I can express anything that’s in my mind, it is also not about criticizing something or someone I just don’t like or supporting someone or something I love, it is not just about scattering out information and putting it in someone else’s mind, but rather a course and a medium which your soul will voluntarily come out from your body and your heart would be buried its own self for its country.

An open-letter for my Countrymen
I was scrolling down on my feed when I saw various posts from different private social accounts who are dishing out their different POVs about the Manila Bay’s Rehabilitation as part of the Government’s ‘Build, build, build Program’ – which is highly being supported by many, but also is said to be leading to reclamation or to have it returned to the government, sounds antipathetic right? Okay, if I were to give my own standpoints about contemporary national issues on these projects concerning and affecting predominantly the poor ones like me, I would definitely NOT go against but rather think more on the hopeful prospects. Why? Let me share my views to you, although, you are not interested. Lol [I need this too btw] But first, I am not a blind follower neither confused. I have my own sentiments and beliefs, just so you know. I am no stranger to things, people, occurrences, propagandas, especially, ADMINISTRATION, like duh? I have been living this so called ‘life’ for 22 years and still haven’t seen any changes and improvements in this country -- NGAYON LANG, in all fairness. What’s my point? Maybe this project will seriously create a huge impact, as I said, mostly, sa mga kapos sa buhay o mga mahihirap na gaya ko. Be enlightened that if the Manila Bay, together with the other areas, will be reclaimed by the government, there will be infrastructures, buildings and other business establishments na itatayo across Metro Manila. Some of the disadvantages of the reclamation, (sabi nila):               a.    If this reclamation be done, only the rich people and foreigners and privileged few could benefit or get a job, ‘an idea of the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer.’               b.    If this reclamation be done, white-collar workers will get a decent pay and job; they can be promoted too, while blue-collar workers will still suffer with the contractualization.               c.    If this reclamation be done, a more decongested Metro Manila will be experienced due to the rapid number of people, cars and additional wastes.              d.    If this reclamation be done, it will cause destruction to the environment and the city would be vulnerable to disasters. What do these things mean? I can’t elaborate this more, but listen to yourselves; you are the ones who are isolating or let me say, degrading/discouraging us (the poor) from the privileged ones. If infrastructures and industries will be built then job vacancies will be opened. Unemployment rate will be reduced. Underprivileged, even the unschooled and untrained ones will be offered more opportunities. Quit those stereotypical concepts that ill-educated “cannot do this, cannot do that…” they can, we can. This project, though sounded and planned to be hostile is also an action of the authorities to spread to the Filipinos especially to the ignorant and permissive that they need to be aware and be responsible with the nature. Isn’t this idea beneficient? Have you not seen the Filipinos who banded together just to clean up the mess of your fellow countrymen, and now you wanted this positive outcomes to be stopped? Stop being pessimistic. I, being a journalism student, trained and still training to be more watchful, strongly support every Government’s plans concerning the betterment of the nature, on the good of the Filipino people and of the entire country. Let us all encourage each and every one not to go against the improving current administration. To my beloved fellowmen, hindi tayo bulag, hindi rin tayo mangmang. Pero pagod na tayo, all those past years, we’ve been abused and maltreated. This is all about our future, the future of our kids and grandchildren, the future of the Philippines. Let’s admit the fact that we are all feeling the improvements and quite a bit of change and lastly, This country is already at its worst. I don’t need to explain the last part. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9 [KJV]
