Today I learned that Shell Oil was started by a Victorian businessman, Marcus Samuel, who really did sell sea shells from the sea shore, importing them in vast quantities from far-flung corners of the earth, and made a lot of money in the process, because the Victorians were apparently mad about decorating things with shells back in the day. He then expanded his company, called Shell, into importing a wide variety of other things, until his son had the wacky idea to include oil among them, and soon after that they stopped trading in everything else, as they became the biggest oil company on the planet. But that's why their logo is still today a picture of a shell: because that's what they originally sold.
