on a whim glanced through some sam chung posts and. holy shit he's invisible symbolically in recognition of the invisibility of chinatown to law/support and perhaps asian immigrants as a whole. and they're HIS people.

Dragging a dead horse around, but growing up with a big comics fan father only to look up and realize that a lot of (modern?) Marvel just seems to hate our guts (sinophobia / anti-asian racism abounds), its.. oddly nice to see someone that feels a bit more grounded and humanized. YESSS !! sam's liminality as a vigilante both within the symbolism of his costume as well as the nature of the circumstances of his vigilante-ism is metaphorical for his status as an 'illegal' immigrant in the us, the very concept of being an immigrant as an experience, AND the way he uses his vigilante-ism regarding his community and what that represents for the people within it.

the concept of, "stories aren't told for us," is such a succinct way to put it. like stories for real, sometimes even intentionally, aren't told for us. soule's representation of chinese people isn't perfect at all, especially considering the overall context of The Hand and his usage of it in sam's story, but sam is a character that's wonderful for representation and there's a lot you can do with him and his story. i'm glad it resonates!

i dislike kurtis conner. specifically because he's always sticking his nose into the very surfaces of fandom culture but you can very much tell he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing or what the fuck he's talking about and it pisses me off. otherwise he's cool

it also doesn't help that he makes really tasteless jokes where it feels like he's laughing more at whatever he's talking about rather than with them which just enables his audience to laugh at whatever topic he's talking about

saw part of a forehead on my dash and immediately recognised it as katharine isabelle's from ginger snaps am i going crazy. am i going insane.

see i WOULD say that it goes dean/mike murdock and sam/matt murdock in their respective relationships and i'd be Right down to the fact that matt is a fucking disabled superhero whose powers are inherently linked to his blindness and sam's monstrosity and otheredness is so easily substitutable for a disability allegory + mike existing from matt and how much of dean's Purpose is simply Sammy but the thing is that matt is quite literally both matt and mike. he created mike as a foil of himself to both protect and express himself because the other ways he had of protecting himself became suffocating. which circles back to my original point that matt is sam and sam is matt because they're the only ones capable of that level of identity compartmentalisation. but also the thing is that dean channels the structures that surround his relationship with sam and imposes said compartmentalisation on both sam and his relationship with sam and sam followed largely because it was that or die, which is a kind of power mike does not have over his own self, much less his relationship with others. mike built himself to fit into matt's world while for sam and dean, it's ironically flipped despite the dean/mike and sam/matt mirroring—sam's position in the dynamics of his relationship with dean is defined by his inability to fit into Sammy. he essentially folded himself into dean's world to match their relationship. but then in the end sam has a son and names him dean. matt is matt and mike, sam is sam and dean. ouroboros. also like. mike gets killed by the structure of violence re: daredevil as collateral vs dean dying (for the last time) on a hunt
