I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE. I love both Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson, and the fact that they are together, playing these characters, is a cinematic dream come true. The additional super exciting aspect of that is that they will be doing a press tour together, so we get to hear all about how they became close friends and what it was like filming together. <3 <3

They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was his appearance, that it was impossible to avoid his sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of each were overspread with the deepest blush.

Far from the Madding Crowd
I just watched the recent film that came out based on this book, and while it was astoundingly well cast, it was very disappointing. In my opinion, this story is the greatest love triangle portrayed in literature. The silliness that is called a love triangle in more recent novels is generally a love story with an extra person added in, just to have another set of emotions. Bathsheba is genuinely not in love with either of the guys, and then at the very last moment realizes she does love one of them. And they both have legitimately strong feelings for her, not in the way that other characters in literature are portrayed, as thinking they have feelings and then finding someone else who fits them better. Both men always only have eyes for her. There are incredible twists and turns in the book that make your heart race, and produce verbal exclamations while reading.
I acknowledge that being so enamored with the book may taint my opinion of the film, but for years I have prided myself on being able to separate a book and its coinciding film. Several clear issues stood out: soundtrack, cinematography, and time. The soundtrack was incredibly lacking, completely dropping out at dramatic moments when it should be swelling. The cinematographer missed so many moments that could have afforded dramatic sweeps of the landscape, or of action taking place before it is zoomed in upon. And time, which is something I take issue with in most cases of classic novels being adapted for screen. In EVERY case I have experienced, a mini-series and series feels more complete, more satisfying, and truer to the story than a film ever could. It was the same with Sense and Sensibility 1995 vs. 2008, and with Little Women 1994 vs. 2017. I say this with the complete awareness that both the 90s films are classics. But there is more room in a mini-series for the story to breathe, and for the audience to become engulfed in a multi-sensory experience of a story we already love. This movie lacked, for want of a better phrase, epic-ness.

The Eternal Relevance of Jane
Tumblr media
It continues to amaze me while reading Jane Austen’s novels how applicable they are to today’s life, although it makes sense because they are still so beloved in our society. I was particularly struck by this while listening to Chapter 10 of Northanger Abbey on my way in to work this morning. First, Austen points out that while Catherine, in preparing for the cotillion (and Mrs. Allen, always), is so focused on what she is going to wear that she has trouble sleeping, the man she is hoping to impress with her fashion will not notice her because of her dress, as all men do not notice a woman because of their fashion. Women choose their dresses and earrings and shoes to please themselves, to make themselves feel confident. Austen asserts (correctly, in my opinion) that any woman who is choosing what she wears based on what she thinks will impress a man is doing so fruitlessly, because he is not going to notice that her dress is the spotted muslin versus the tamboured muslin it might have been. This is not only a brilliant observation, but a feminist one. Women should choose what they wear based on what will make them feel comfortable and confident, because it is the ease and confidence that men will notice.
Austen also describes, in this this chapter, the annoyance of being pursued by a man you have no interest in, while seeking the man with whom you truly wish to spend your time. This is an experience so many of us have felt, and it drives home the idea that while societal expectations, fashionable clothes, and dance etiquette may change with the times, humans and their experiences are strikingly the same.
