During language courses, we wrote a note to a colleague about what type of work she should do. I saw that it was "should," so I wrote everything very direct, and the sentences turned out kind of rude.
Je moet...
Je moet...
Je moet...
And too short, too. I asked docent what to do to make sentences more polite and she said that I should start with "Wil jij...?"
I asked why if according to the text, it's our colleague's job to do these tasks, I can't ask her can she do them or not. She should.
Docent explained that this is simply how the Dutch speak and that it is simply politeness. To make sentences more friendly.
I thanked her, and added that "vriendelijk is moeilijk voor mij".
I don't care how right this phrase grammatically, I like it. A lot. I wanna t-shirt with this phrase.

I heard advice from the docent that in order to learn a language faster, you need to read in it. Especially things that might interest you. This made me go to kringloopwinkel (the translator insistently translates it as a consignment shop, but secondhand sounds more familiar) because I wanted to see if they have some cheap books that might interest me.
And I was right. Just 2 euros 75 cents and I found something.

1) Something that is probably a book with comic inserts for children/early teens. I tried to read the description, and I understood most of it, so I could try to read it.
2) Spiders because I like spiders. Met gratis stickers!
3) Something that definitely has simple language. A children's book about cats, I think it's great for practice. And the pictures are beautiful.
Ik wil niet praten, maar ik kan lezen. Niet slecht.
Honestly, I really didn't want to buy books from regular stores to practice reading in Dutch. It would be too expensive.

I’ve come to the harrowing realisation that the only way to write my book is to write my book

I felt like telling you about my system. It's like a spreadsheet where I mark what I did, but it's related to me trying to delete things from "watch/read/listen later" and stuff like that. And it helps me in weird ways. Plus, it gives me tips about what I do in my spare time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transcript of squares:
Red - one YouTube video deleted from 'watch later'
Darker orange - one level in phone games
Bright orange - a) one page from physical comic or manga (because they are priority), b) one chapter from comic or manga online
Darker yellow - songs that survived forth wave of sorting (only the ones I listened fully)
Lighter yellow - one Google page I closed
Lime green - song I had in my collection but stopped liking, and it is in a special folder now
Green - song from new songs which survived first wave of sorting
Darker green - one lesson from courses
Dark blue - one post
Purple - one new song in collection
Pink (several meanings): a) one page of physical book (because it's a priority and must be more encouraged), b) one chapter of audiobook, c) one chapter from fanfic
Light green, peach and lilac is private, related to my friend and loved ones.

Mentally patting myself on the head for deciding to see if I had the perfect box at home instead of buying a "maybe suitable" box from the store. I now have a box for private photos.

I bought a magnetic board, which means I need to put pictures on it. The place under Whirl seems empty because my personal drawing is hanging there, and I'm not that comfortable yet.

So, I was walking through our Saturday market. And I see: a table with bronze figures, which I had never seen before here. I couldn’t pass by these three, because they reminded me of my mother. I bought them.
Me: How do you feel about bronze?
Mom: So-so, why?
Me: *shows the figures*
Mother (enthusiastically): You know, I probably really like bronze.
They stand on her table now.

Nothing, just this Starscream living in my head rent-free. I was a little bit chaotic in buying issues of this comics (cause until recent time, I didn't even know comics store I can visit sometimes sell Transformers comics), so this look surprised me. Like, what happened with you?! That's both terrifying and hilarious.

Wait. I'm ready to call that pile of ear pads from earphones that I've collected over the years of using wired earphones a collection.
And something that is not a collection, but that brings me a strange joy. I have a box with a dead dragonfly in almost perfect condition. I did not kill it, I just found it on the street. I have no way to take a photo and show it, because it remained in my other house. I would definitely have an entomological collection if I didn't feel sorry about killing insects, so no. Can't imagine pinning them.
Because polls get the most engagement I’m making a poll lol
(For the sake of this poll: a collector is anyone who *currently has* a collection of things either physically or digitally that they intentionally acquired which can be grouped together)
Please please please please pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase tell me what you collect and optionally why!!!! (This is doubly true if your collection is related to a regulatory/“special” interest!!!!!!! That’s honestly the only reason I’m making this poll, I am begging youuuuuuuuuuu
Neurodivergent related tags are for reach as I know a lot of neurodiverse people are collectors. I do try my best not to clutter those tags, if anyone has an issue with it please tell me and I’ll remove them

I collect music. Not in physical format, I'm just very into finding music (I have over 7,000 songs now and I don't make themed playlists because I like to listen to music randomly). I recently realized that I'm a collector of playing cards. I also have a huge collection of stuffed animals. I also have a lot of beads, is it collection? I need them for sorting.
I have other things I'm interested in, but I wouldn't call it collections.

My darling has really got me hooked on the Murderbot Diaries in no time. I've already listened to five of the seven books in audio format. However, the main problem I've encountered with not being a native speaker is that I don't fucking understand the characters' names half the time, and it goes something like this:
1) Willen? No, Wilken? Micklen? Michelin? Stacy? Tlacey?
2) Brain insistently calls Girth Gorrister (no, honey, that's a different story).
3) Art or Apt, that is the question.
4) Abruptly forgetting who the character is because I didn't catch the name.
5) Oh my god, I butcher their names so much. Gurathin.
Other problems: It's easy to miss events or misunderstand something if you lose focus for a few seconds.
And since I don't want to a) pirate these books, b) read the e-book because I lose focus quickly and my eyes hurt, I decided to just buy the physical books. I work, I can afford it. Plus, because of audiobooks, I already know that I like it.
So far, only the first four, because they were sold as a set. And because buying all the books at once is quite overwhelming (for my pocket, I've already spent a lot this month (totally worth it)).

That's how books look without dust jackets.
'All Systems Red' is grey, the other 3 is black. The titles on the spine.
Task: Read for the second time.
------
Bonus (spoiler):
Me: I wonder why ComfortUnit wants to kill her so much.
Tlacey: I like mouthy bots.
Me (cringing): I see why.

How I store my collection of playing cards.
Yes, it's mostly Bicycle here because a) I've restricted myself to buying playing cards only in physical stores (because if I get access to online stores, I'll become insatiable); b) the physical stores I can walk to (mostly one store, if you don't count my rare trips to other cities) sell mostly Bicycle and Piatnik, with occasional guests in the form of other brands; c) somewhere around the tenth deck I finally decided that I'm more interested in cards that are as stylized as possible, and since my main store only has Bicycle, it fits my interests perfectly.

Update: The textile paint survived the wash!!! Nothing came off, the color didn't change. The instructions worked even when I didn't use an iron, but just left the shirt alone for a couple of days. I washed it at 40 degrees and 800 rpm, quick wash, half an hour. Just in case, I turned the T-shirt over with the hate monologue facing out while drying and hung it on a hanger.

What can happen to a cheap old work t-shirt if you have fabric paint, some free time, and a sudden renewed interest in I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. Well, also because I didn't really want to lie around all day, but that's a more personalized reason. I can't say I tried very hard, I've never done this before, and I just wanted to see what would happen and not worry about it turning out badly. Suddenly, I'm happy with the result. The text, of course, spreads when I put it on because it's a tight fit, but who cares? I'm just happy I was attentive enough not to write the wrong letters. At the same time, I'll find out if the paint will really stick to the fabric after 48 hours, as promised on the package. Ooh, experiments :)
