Robert Frank - Artist research post
Robert Frank, born in November 9, 1924, Zürich, Switzerland, was a Swiss American photographer. He was a street photographer, or more specifically how American life was after the war. He had a professional photography career at a young age. "The Americans" was one of Franks more known and notable works. This was a photo booklet published in 1958, first in France. Later in 1960 in the U.S. The photos contained in the booklet captured the postwar life of the Americans. There is a total of 83 pictures. The photos in this booklet show all types of people in America. People of different race, religion, ethnicity, and social class. All the photos are in black and white, printed in gelatin silver print. This photo booklet is one of the best works I have seen. He was able to capture so many personal, real, raw moments of American life back then. I find it more fascinating how he decided to document these moments of a country that he is not from. I just wonder why he decided to document the people of a country that is foreign to him instead of his own. It's just fascinating how many photos he actually took which was a great number, a lot didn't make the final cut.

Robert Capa - Artist research post
Robert Capa is titled as “the greatest war photographer in the world.” Capa was a war photographer and photojournalist. He photographed the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. He also photographed the liberation of Paris and the battle of the bulge. He was born as Andre Friedmann but sold prints under the name Robert Capa when he moved from his home country. The photo that got him recognized as a photographer was his photo of a loyalist soldier who was wounded. The photo became a symbol of war.
Tumblr media
The medium for this photo is gelatin silver paint and the dimensions are 24.7 x 34 cm
I think this photo really captured what war was, during the times of war. This photo shows a powerful message.

Ansel Adams- artist research post
Ansel Adams was born February 20th, 1902- April 22, 1984. He was a photographer and environmentalist. He was known for his black and white photos of landscapes of California. He had his first one-man exhibition in 1928 at the San Francisco’s headquarters club. One of his most popular photos named “Monolith, the Face of Half Dome” is the photo that launched his photography career. This photo was taken in April 10th, 1927. He took this photo on his hike in Yosemite national park.
Tumblr media
In this photograph you can see how he captured the beauty of nature and this iconic place in Yosemite. Him having this photo in black and white really brings out the whites and blacks of this photo. I think this picture is really pleasing to look at. The way that he composed this shot is well-composed. You can either chose from looking first from the left to right or right to left. But the main attraction is the dome.

Graciela Iturbide - artist research post
Graciela Iturbide was born in Mexico City, on May 16, 1942. She was exposed to the world of photography early on in her life. She had gotten her first camera when she was eleven years old. After one of her children passed away, she decided to take up a professional career in photography in 1970. She is widely known for her black and white photos. Her works consists of capturing Mexican or indigenous women and the state that they are in. One work in particular, named "Mujer Angel" or angel woman is one of her most popular photo, taken in 1979 in the Sonora Desert. This shot is of a Seri Indian woman. This photo was actually a part of a series that she did on Seri Indians as commissioned by the National Indigenous Institue of Mexico. This photo shows a Seri Indian woman with long hair and a long flowy skirt. This woman appears to be in the mountains, expediting somewhere with a tape recorder. The medium for this photo is gelatin silver print and the dimensions are 13 x 18 1?2 inches, this can be found in the Philadelphia Museum of art. I can resonate with her work because I am a Mexican woman and her work consists of Mexican women. While I haven't been through what these women have been through, I still feel for them.

Diego Rivera - Artist research post
Diego Rivera was a Mexican painter and muralist. He was born December 8, 1886, in Guanajuato, Mexico. He passed away on November 24, 1957, in Mexico City. A lot of his work consisted of murals. He was a part of the Mexican Muralist movement and made a great impact in this community of art. The themes in his work related to his native home, Mexico and issues relating to society.
Tumblr media
This work is called 'Creation' done in 1922-23 by Diego Rivera. This was Diego's first government-commissioned mural for the Bolivar Auditorium of the National Preparatory School in Mexico City. This mural is over a thousand square feet. As for the medium, it is done with fresco and the technique of encaustic. This mural really caught my attention because of the whole composition and the vibrant colors. This mural consists of religious and mythological components that he combined to make this amazing mural. The way that he chose to make one side of the mural look the same on the other side, while using different characters. It gives the mural a sense of unity in the composition, which is pleasing to the eye. One thing that I found really interesting about this mural, while I was doing my research is that Rivera actually didn't like this mural. He didn't like it because he thought that his technique, he used with this painting was too Italian. I personally, am really fond of murals, which was another reason as to why I liked this mural.

Intro
Hi, my name is Arlette Chavez. I’m currently a sophomore this year. My major is animation with emphasis on 2D animation! I chose to take this class because I thought it would be cool to learn how to take photos. I never took a photography class in highschool. I would like to take photography up as a hobby! So far I like the experience. In this class I hope to learn to how to tell a story through my photos and obviously take good pictures. :)
