Drakan 2
Following the last post. I put this WIP on patreon last month and kinda forgot about it. It’s been in the works on and off for like a year maybe, just cos I wasn’t ready to push it to where I want. It’s getting there now.

Drakan: Order of the Flame
The Order was no more, but the Dark Union’s dreams of conquest had been shattered. With the fall of Navaros, the Dark Union’s hold on its monstrous armies collapsed. Chaos spread across the land. Mankind banded once more into many tribes and kingdoms, and the great achievements of the Order of the Flame were forgotten. The dragons, weary at last of the world of men, withdrew into timeless slumber, never again to return. The age without kings had ended. And of that brief golden era, only the legends remain.

Dragon wip.
Inspired by the two Drakan games, really. Or we’ll say it’s a fan dragon. Pffft.

As a child I played a lesser known game that I came by at Toys-R-Us and to this day I hold it in my mind as one of the best games I’ve played to this day.
To me, Drakan: The Ancient’s Gates was PERFECT. I owe a little of who I am and the things I am interested in to that game. And to me, it was so far ahead of its time. It was so open world plus voice-overs and for an early 2000’s PS2 game I think the graphics were pretty damn good.
As a child I lived and breathed dragons. I was so fascinated with them and when I by chance came across a game where not only were you a warrior woman but you also RODE dragons and could control him and fight and fly with him around an open world not too badly loaded down with loading screens. It was almost like Surreal Software picked my little brain and created a game that in my heart would not be rivaled until I played Oblivion.
The game let me be who I wanted to be in my mind. A badass warrior woman that wore armor and fought with 2H swords, longswords, shortswords, magic or bows and arrows was just impeccable to me and I couldn’t get enough. I lived that game. I wish there were more games that followed in it’s footsteps and I wish I could meet the game’s creators and shake their hands and tell them how much it meant to me. Unfortunately Surreal is no longer around and that breaks my heart.
I also wish that more people had played it or at least heard of it. I lent it out to my friends and that would have been the only way they would have played it or picked it up and they fell in love too. One day all I want is to meet someone else who played Drakan and just gush for hours over all the things that gave to my younger self. I haven’t met anyone in person that has played it yet, but I havent given up hope.
Searching the Drakan tumblr tag by chance has given me the overwhelming feeling that I was not alone in my love for such an underrated game that was leaps and jumps ahead of its time.

Not being able to get this ancient game to run on my computer anymore sucks, but being able to recreate, in some small way, the way it felt to play through this world and story as a kid, my first real run in with high fantasy stuff, feels rad, and is not something I used to think I’d be capable of, even if I have a long way yet to go.
