Rewatching the 2006 BBC Robin Hood series and I'd genuinely forgotten just how utterly unhinged this show was.
Like...it's the most cheesy and ridiculously shot thing with some of the worst CGI imaginable; bad guys hamming up a storm left, right and centre; multiple plot lines that go absolutely nowhere; multiple characters who turn up for one episode and then are never even referred to again even on the rare occasions when they aren't just packed off to Scarborough; people in 1190s' England wearing hoodies and denim waistcoats and combat trousers and with endless access to hair products and eyeliner; and I'm pretty sure the only direction that was ever given to Richard Armitage was just "smirk and look obviously evil"...
But then it also has the second episode opening with someone's tongue being cut out, a hugely imperfect central hero who is pretty blatantly suffering from PTSD and a Messiah complex (the latter of which is both systematically laughed off or outright encouraged by his friends) on top of all the other regular shit he has to deal with and there's multiple episodes that put focus on the fact that this is fundamentally a guy who needs help that no one either realises or knows enough to give, some pretty on-the-nose commentary regarding oligarchic politics, a deconstruction of the Nice Guy thought process of "I treated you with the barest minimum basic human decency this one time, now you must give me all the sex or I'll make your life hell"...
The BBC really went through a time in the mid-2000s, but this above everything else always has me thinking just...what even was this show..?
