"Chinga La Migra" protest banner 4/? (Recycled fabric)
"Fuck the immigration" is the literal translation of "chinga la migra", but the true meaning is "fuck immigration patrol/border patrol/ICE". And truly, how can anyone whose sole job is to rip families apart and disappear human beings not be hated? The vulgar language is necessary for describing the pure hatred I and many others feel towards ICE. How good can a country be if there is a secret police force who is in charge of disappearing people? We've seen this before in our country, with slave patrols, and outside of this country, with the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany and the OGPU/NKVD/MVD of Soviet Russia. I ask myself, often, "how can these men in ICE sleep at night?", and I still have yet to answer that question.
Like many people, I have been struggling to keep calm during this horrific first year of Tr*mps presidency. Feeling powerless, I opted to start collecting phrases that describe my feelings in a short, concise way, and turning these phrases into tapestries that are inspired by protest banners.

"ICE=KKK" protest banner 3/? (Recycled fabric, Polyfil)
ICE is an armed secret police force who are carrying out an ethnic cleansing for Tr*mp. This country has a long and violent history of racism, and the deportation of Mexican immigrants (some who immigrated 'legally', some who didn't, some who were born here) is just another chapter in the history book of the USA. Without due process, ICE agents have torn apart families and disappeared people to concentration camps with inhumane living conditions. Unacceptable in every conceivable way.

"Propaganda Machine" protest banner 2/? (Recycled fabric, Polyfil)
The second banner in this series. Learning about the different kinds of propaganda (movies, news, fiction, advertisement) has opened my eyes a painful amount to how over saturated the world of propaganda is. Propaganda is not a one size fits all, but instead is a small square in a figurative quilt, a reccuring element that has continued to work for the entirety of human history. Included in this 'quilt' are other factors like colonialism, white supremacy, nationalism, war mongering, and capitalism. There is something bigger at play here, bigger than any one person can comprehend. The propaganda pushed by Israel and the United States is the main inspiration for this tapestry, propaganda that says that it's okay to wipe out an entire group of people, to commit mass genocide on Palestinians. I am not the only one to vehemently disagree with this notion.

"Is America Great Yet?" protest banner 1/? (Recycled fabric, Polyfil)
This first tapestry was created a few months ago, while Tr*mp was still signing executive orders to pull government funding from various organizations (cancer research, libraries, school districts, the list goes on) and funneling funding into the terrorist group that is called ICE. How exactly do these orders make this country great? The short answer: it doesn't.
Like many people, I have been struggling to keep calm during this horrific first year of Tr*mps presidency. Feeling powerless, I opted to start collecting phrases that describe my feelings in a short, concise way, and turning these phrases into tapestries that are inspired by protest banners.

Making a new thing, mounted a crochet panel (made up of two purple yarns (one sparkly) and half double crochet stitches) onto a yellow painted canvas. The back just ended up looking cool

Finally got around to finishing this weaving for good. I abandoned it for like 6 months when I was about 3/4s of the way through, then I finished it and took it off the loom and just shoved it into a frame, where it laid crumpled and sad for another 6 months. I tied the edges together around a piece of cardboard, then stitched this string of beads to the border, and added some clear seed beads to the negative space.
I guess this piece is about body positivity, or something like that. I honestly just wanted to weave anything when I started this. I wanted to use up a bunch of thread I already owned, and the chaotic rainbow was born.
Now that I look at this, it's probably hard to tell what the hell is actually being depicted, or maybe looking at this piece for so long has scrambled my brain. Can someone tell me if this makes any sense??

The Empress
Acrylic on canvas
Painted this back in 2020, I can't find the original but I was inspired by this Instagram model who did rococco-like fashion, she had matched her mask to her dress. I was also inspired by some lilac earrings I made and Yayoi Kusama's use of patterns. I wanted bright colors, busy patterns, texture, and I wanted to reference the actual trauma of quarantine. And since I can't help myself, I also gave her some clown face paint, because I am a firm believer in clown royalty and whimsy.

Drew my grandparents' late puppies. These guys were the bestest of friends, my grandfather would walk them up to three times a day, my grandmother was kept warm by their small fuzzy bodies. The one on the left, Carter, was blind, while Gibson, the one on the right, was deaf. They were two halves of a whole, they played together, ate together, slept together, argued. They loved each other and they loved my grandparents and I. Gibson passed two years before Carter, I'm only happy that they're together again. I miss you boys.
