Soul Food
Tumblr media
Soul Food is a movie that came out in 1997. Soul Food is narrated or told by Ahmad Johnson. It shows his family and the trails and tribulations that they are going through. The Johnsons are a close family, that come together each week on Sunday for family dinner.
Soul Food generates good conversation because it shows a different view of the African-American family. Soul Food shows 2 parent homes, not only are both parents in the home, but they are married. It shows a close family. A family full of inclusiveness. It also takes a look at the unsavory parts of family.
Soul Food doesn't overly sexify women. It does however portray infidelity's in the marriages. One involving a cousin. It show the unfortunate reality of life. The way things were handled and how it affected the family is one reason why the black family handles certain situations the way they are handled. Unfortunately we would rather not talk to family or just remove ourselves from the family altogether. It promotes the brokenness.

Black Lightning :)
Black Lightning is about a superhero Jefferson Pierce who wants to be a regular civilian. He fights crime by night and works at the local high school by day. He has 2 daughters who are also superhero who have to not only learn how to use their powers but also keep them under control once they start being hunted by the authorities for research. It relates to our class because it showcases African-Americans in a different light. It gives a chance to show off the creativity.
This show generates a conversation on racial identity or identity period by going through the motions with this family. As they struggle with everyday life, going through a divorce or separation and trying to hide the fact that you are a meta-human. You can't fully be yourself because you are worried about what other will think of you. It goes to show that we can have fully functioning families in all races, we can have superheroes in all shapes, sizes, genders, and colors.
I like Black Lightning especially because it doesn't over sexualize the female characters. Jefferson's oldest daughter Anissa or Thunder :) is a lesbian and isn't dressed provocatively. I love how she is able to showcase her skills and still be modest in a sense. I also like how she is a lesbian, even though some people feel like tv movies and music is starting to shove being gay or apart of the LGBTQ+ community, I think Anissa's character is done with great taste.
