Next Ghibli fanart! I get the feeling Whisper of the Heart is a bit more obscure than some of their other films, but it’s by far one of my favorites. The pacing and slice of life atmosphere paired with a sense of wonder and mystery sent me searching for those things in my own life and my own stories to tell. Work in progress underpainting for Raphus cucullatus, more commonly known as the Dodo. The first recorded encounter with these strange looking birds was in 1598 by Dutch sailers on the island of Mauritius, who initially referred to them as “Walghvogel” which means “Disgusting” or “Tastless” “Bird” in their language, named because of their somewhat lazy disposition and flavorless taste. The route of the name Dodo is less clear but it’s possible that it is an adaptation of the word Dodaars, which means “fat-ass” or “knot-ass.”

The Dutch Sailors who discovered them only did so after they found themselves low on supplies in the Indian Ocean just after a storm, in less than a century after first encountering humans these birds were extinct, most likely due to being out-competed and/or killed by animals the human settlers introduced like feral pigs.

Despite their fame, little is actually known about the birds themselves, no complete specimens have been found and most of what we know about their appearance in life comes from illustrations and written accounts. We know that they approximately 3 feet tall, had small wings, and were incapable of flight, we know that they appeared to be omnivorous, and possessed a large almost bulbous beak with a bald face. DNA analysis has helped a lot in placing them in the correct family tree, with their closest relatives being the Asian Nicobar Pigeon. Despite all of this it is still very little to go on, as they became popular inclusions in fiction and folklore, developing an almost mythical status, making real study after the fact difficult.

Most people associate the name Dodo with foolishness and failure, much like the name dinosaur is often associated with extinction and obsolete. Despite that these birds were masters of their domain until encountering human beings, they had no natural predators and no need to defend themselves from humans or the other animals they introduced.
