say it with me: deserts aren't inherently bad. deserts are very important and are home to many ecosystems. you want an unhealthy, over-exploited desert to become a healthy, thriving desert. you don't want an unhealthy, over-exploited desert to become a forest. deserts and forests are distinct, separate biomes that are both indispensable. you want to see them both at their best. and a desert at its best doesn't look like a forest at its best. they're each beautiful in their own way.
#I have many thoughts on this but can’t articulate them well enough for a post#yes deserts should not be viewed as wastelands#however this also feels like a strawman since generally ‘greening the desert’ refers to mitigating warming-induced…#…desertification in savanna biomes#however there are some projects in Western Asia (particularly as part of the Zionist colonization effort but also in other countries)…#…which are converting deserts into Mediterranean forests and that is ecologically harmful#there’s a great article on that from Yale that I can share if anyone’s interested#this post raises some great points but I want to add nuance#ecology
