Printed this on a t-shirt back in 2016 for art meetings. I ran artist studios back then (over 100 artists) & lost count the amount of times I was contacted by hairdressers, tattooists, cafes, bars, restaurants, businesses who said our community of artists could put artworks in their premises. They didn’t want to buy it #ItllBeGoodPublicity

Schools, community centres, charities who wanted workshops for free. A good photo opportunity at the end with the mayor of Bolton #ItllBeGoodPublicity

Top tips

Buy what you like, not for investment. You have to live with it. I guarantee you’ll look at it every day. And who knows, it could be a good investment in the future.

Start small. Small paintings, sculptures and original prints (screen prints, etchings, relief prints) can be reasonably priced.

If the artist is local to you or somewhere you plan to visit, make an appointment with the artist to visit their studio. You’ll more than likely get a brew and some cake, meet their cat. Artists love studio visits. This will give you an overall insight into their practice.

Having artworks in your home makes for good conversation. Tell your friends!

Some good things about AKA Kallergi 4 art space

- it’s humongous, 135sqm ground and same roof space. That’s nearly 3000sqft for all you my age and still in old measurements. Loads of potential.

- it’s at the end of a short cul de sac so evenings and weekends the street is mine and suitable for parties just being off the popular street Kerameikou.

- it’s a bit chilly in the winter and warm in the summer, but no damp or leaks

- I have lots of arty neighbours from established galleries to artist led initiatives.

- I’m a 15 minute walk from the acropolis. I can see it in the next street. You couldn’t set something like this up anymore central.

- I’ll argue with anyone that Metaxourgeio and Kerameikos are the best areas. They were both late to the gentrification party so they manage to retain lots of character and not as built up with apartments as other areas.

- some of the best restaurants are down here

- I’ve got 21 cats 🐈 🐈‍⬛

24/7 access, €50 per month, €50 in advance & €50 key/fob deposit that you’ll get back on returning them when you leave. So, €150 to start.

AKAgr will not only be an arts production space, but with other artist there will be a critical discourse on tap. A positive space for makers.

UPDATE! Six bankers at the ready for small to medium size works. The workshop is progressing. It's still a bit chilly so the doors are open for reference. How good will this be in the summer?

I'm fitting pendant lights today to brighten it up and get some low energy bulbs. The 500w spots are eating electric.

The other shutters that's down will be the entrance to the gallery. Just need to build an internal wall. Got all the materials thanks to Rebecca Camhi Gallery @rebeccacamhigallery 😊

There's still a couple of places left for sculptors needing space to work. €50 a month.
