After a long day of butchering a job, a same day do over, press and various parts delivery, and trying to get caught up on holiday orders... well, nothing really fascinating happened. The day just came to an abrupt end after 17 hours of brouhaha with a messy shop to return to tomorrow. I am both over the hill excited and fantastically upset with how things are happening right now. After 23 hours of moving heavy press parts, tools, makeready supplies, chemicals, inks, and rollers I can honestly say we salvaged as much as we could. Another Engraving house gave up production today. We moved supplies from 3am Friday to 2am Saturday, quite literally just getting home now. We managed to save three presses (we don’t really have room for) and two truck loads of other goods related to the industry that will be used by us throughout of remaining years. Unfortunately, everything else was scrapped. It wasn’t possible to save. An entire semi trailer of presses started us down as we drove into the shop this morning and my dad and myself picked as much as we could. We were only given a few days notice of this happening and it is with a heavy heart when I say that six Die Stamping presses were sent to the scrapyard today... The following are no longer in production: _Hi-Speed 3 x 8 3/4 : Press No. 7074 _Hi-Speed 4 x 8 3/4 : Press No. 7063 _Hi-Speed 5 x 9 : Press No. 7557 _The 3 x 8 Modern : Press No. 6558 _C.R. Carver Company 3.5 x 4 : Press No. UNKNOWN _C.R. Carver Company 3.5 x 4 : Press No. UNKNOWN They will be missed but we promise to continue stamping, salvaging, and educating everything and anything Die Stamping (Engraving*) *Engraving is Embossing with Ink. Big happenings yesterday! @davebramson helped organize a shop tour and live press demo for students attending Madison College. Might not seem like much but Artistry’s never hosted a tour before (especially one for fifty students!) It was a thrill and an honor to explain the engraving process & give a live press demonstration to an audience this size. I hope everyone enjoyed as much as I did. Can’t wait to do it again... Also, believe it or not, today’s happenings are just as exciting. I usually don’t like running my press this fast or this hard but sometimes it’s required when stamping dense, large image areas such as this. So this happened yesterday. Pictured is the first run of six. Stamped in Rhodamine Gold on Strathmore Impress Soft Grey. Other runs will include Rose Gold and a Light Grey which I have still to decide a PMS match for, or it’ll be a completely custom mix. The second picture is another of the reverse side of the sheet. This de-embossed effect was caused by the 2000psi of pressure used to press the sheet of paper into an etched and inked copper plate. Hand-cut counter force and the impression it makes on the reverse side of the sheet. When creating designs to be engraved it’s always fun and sometimes important to consider what the reverse side of the sheet will look like after the job is complete. This is one of the many things that separates the computer based designers from the print based. It’s important to know the process you’re working with and not just assume it’s all relatively the same.
