Daniel F. Effah is a Ghanaian visual artist and photographer currently residing in Ottawa, Canada. Inspired by the works of both past and contemporary masters, his work amalgamates both his Ghanaian culture with the contemporary, to render stylized images that evoke the duality of the past and present. He pays particular attention to portraiture, capturing the emotions of his subjects. He experiments with various styles with artistic mediums with hopes to create conversations about the African Diaspora.

May you find peace in the unknown, embrace uncertainty with calmness, not anxiety, and appreciate the serenity of not having all the answers.

Yesterday was Juneteenth and also the end of my first year in my Architecture program. I should be happy but the old and indistinct sadness visits me like an old friend. The random burst of violence against black bodies weighs heavy on my mind. The rupturing of broken bones against skin on cold pavements are imagery no one should see over and over again. "The feelin' of an apocalypse happenin' But nothin' is awkward" (Kendrick Lamar). But all I can hope is that something happens about it. 📷: @youngphatty @simplyraeee @bokifide (at Ottawa, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBqWcGXpAWM/?igshid=z66x28bw5w27

"Inner Turmoil" Decided to look back at old work and found this rare gem of talented artist @art.life.andre which reminded me of the daily struggle of most creatives. The struggling emotional duality of either basking in the ambiance of your work or being crippled by the anxiety from it. Dispossession is the body of work which photographs those affected by the eviction of the Timbercreek community within the settings of their homes. The basis of the series was grounded in the quintessential question, “Where is the balance between profits and developments that serve the community?” The work explores the stages of grief, mistrust, and defeat experienced by the evicted residents, as they find themselves alienated from the new vision of the neighbourhood. By shinning the spotlight on the misguiding normalcy of eviction, the photographs provide a visual platform for the uprooted, as they are eclipsed by gentrification. Simultaneously, by examining traditional development through a people-centred lens, this series re-centres our gaze towards the necessity of affordable housing and the destructive impact of losing one’s home. For those who missed the show, you can check out the full res images of the series on my website: artofeffah.com (at Ottawa, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn1eBElhYDM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ude6pallw6bk

Finally revealing my new work with the @oawfest on Monday Sept 10 at 7pm at The Sussex Contemporary. The series will be centered on the lives of people currently facing eviction in the Herongate neighborhood in South Ottawa. It will make us question the ways in which we view affordable housing. "Your indivuality makes me believe if I cast a beautiful net, I'd catch only beautiful things" This collaborative body of work by Daniel Effah and @roo.kee borrows inspiration from William E. B. Du Bois’ concept of Double Consciousness in his book "The Souls of Black Folk". The notion of Double Consciousness focuses on the African American identity of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it difficult or impossible to have one unified identity.
