Out of The Box
Out of the Box Proposal My idea for this project is to bring the outside world into my closet. Within a corner of my closet, I will
lay down a sleeping bag and drape a piece of fabric overhead to create the feeling of a tent. Within the “tent” I will have a box filled with dirt, grass, leaves, wet rocks, and burning matches that is contained within a jar of some sort to create the aroma of the outside. I will create a sky full of stars using an artificial light source and also add background noises of crickets to add a peaceful feeling of the night. If I could find a fan, I will also try to create the illusion of wind blowing in the dark closet.
Scent Brief: Minerals, trees, grass, dirt, firewood

Out of The Box
Out of the Box Proposal: I want to take a wooden box that I created and put my sister’s soon to be born baby’s heart beat by recording it from the ultrasound into my I-Phone microphone. For the light I was thinking about recording visual light to flicker with the heart beat and put dirt and grass into it to incite an idea of the baby coming into this world with flashing lights, yet with an earthy core value and the dichotomous relationship we all confront everyday with technology and the nature we have inhabited and vice versa.

I would like to create a space that is focused in showing the contrast between real and artificial. I would like to use a mirror to engage the viewer and scents, that would contrast with the rest of this piece. Scents I would like to come from a natural environment that would associate with the marine atmosphere. The design isn’t fully formed yet, but it would definitely involve playing with light, that is going to influence the perception of space.

Out of the Box
Sound: homemade ASMR sounds (coffee beans and nuts crunching/being stepped on, biting into an apple, peeling an orange
Light: Students will be blindfolded, mostly dark but some artificial light from a lamp Aromatics: Crunches coffee beans, orange peel and pieces of orange, cashews
Basic concept: There will be four different sections of the room -- one that has coffee beans, one that has orange peels and orange slices, one that has cashews, and one that is empty. Students will be guided to these different sections with a blindfold on and with headphones in to listen to ASMR sounds. They will be stepping on/crunching the different aromatic materials as they make their way through the different sections, coinciding with the sounds they hear through the headphones.

SANCTUARY Final Projects for Art of Scent
Using the natural world as their influence, students reflect nature's profound ability to thrive and protect. The sanctuary will be created using materials on hand, combined with aromatically driven elements which can be literal or symbolic. No matter how large or small the piece, Sanctuary must be immersive. The students must answer the question , “How can you create a sanctuary which, by harnessing various elements, (physical, sonic, visual etc.)? allows us to feel safe.
