“As John Dewey High School moves towards the 21st Century, curtain truths remain consistent. Our students continue to care deeply about our school and about each other. The Class of 1992 is truly representative of this spirit and this sense of community. You should be proud of your participation in the Dewey tradition and draw strength and comfort from the realization that this experience will always be a part of you. We wish you great happiness and success as your journey continues.”
- Fondly, Steve Lasky, Coordinator of Senior Programs
26 YEARS LATER - June 2018…
“1992 was the most carefree year of my life! Instead of graduating early, I stayed to enjoy my last year at Dewey as Editor-in-Chief of the 1992 John Dewey High School Yearbook and MATRIX, JDHS’ weekly newsletter.
Teachers at John Dewey HS, especially Steve Lasky, helped mentored and guided me towards my current career. Every teacher at this school was passionate and enjoyed their role as educators. It’s amazing the dedication and hope in the eyes of these teachers that show up everyday. As a low-income immigrant, I thank all the teachers that helped me explored possibilities I didn’t know existed.
In late 2017, we mourn the passing of Steve Lasky and celebrate his passion for education, art and design. I hope you all enjoy these pages as much as I did looking back to celebrate his life and time at John Dewey High School.”

“The challenge in creating this book was to assemble images that would capture and convey the spirit and energy of this senior class. It has been a struggle characterized by many changes and compromises. The cumulative effect of each of the many contributors has resulted in an album that touches us all. The images are warm and wonderful. I am proud of the accomplishment of the staff of this yearbook and of my involvement with the Class of ‘91. I thank you for your support and your efforts. I wish you much happiness and success.” - Steve Lasky, Advisor and Coordinator of Senior Programs

“Well, it’s time for you to move on, but much of this place goes with you... with will remain with you. There is a John Dewey tradition... something about being special... being different. It is – and so are you. This has been a terrific class. There is a great deal of warmth and caring as well as some remarkable talent in the class of 1990. Your places will never be “taken” nor will you be forgotten. Its time for you to move on, but our thoughts and wishes go with you. “Picture if you will.... thousands of images... captured in the course of a year... recalling good times, old friends and sometimes things that you don’t even want to remember. Sounds of the “B” train, the bells, the hallways... tastes of the pizzeria, the bagels and the Energy Factory... sights of the lawn in the spring, snowball fights, the lockerbays, and the front steps.
For our Senior Celebration we bring you... a selection of those people, events and experiences captured in our hearts and minds. Happy Birthday John Dewey, we will never be the same without you... nor you without us.” - Staff of ‘89

“It seems rather appropriate that the class of 1988 has adopted the theme of “togetherness”. I know I am somewhat biased, but I have always thought of the “Dewey Experience” as a phenomenon in a city otherwise characterized as being cool and insensitive. You have shared some extraordinary moments and have been the recipients of some marvelous opportunities.
My role has been defined by the relationships that I have been fortunate to have developed. I am proud of my association with this graduating class. I am especially grateful to Mr. Jack Callaghan for his generosity and his friendship in allowing me to continue to share that incredible time called the “Senior Year at John Dewey High School”. I only hope that this volume of “50 Avenue X” has captured some fo that spirit and a taste of the many experiences that we shared. Continued success and happiness to you all.” - Steve Lasky, Advisor to the yearbook

“Whenever I meet a former Dewey person there is an immediate spark of recognition, an excitement, an empathy, even a sense of urgency to bring me up to date”... Is it the same? The sense of belonging is expressed by a feeling of, “We were in it together... and it really was very special”
Occasionally, when under siege, many of you have said, “I can’t wait to get out of here!” And then, you’ve backed off, realizing, “I didn’t really mean that!” Dewey has become ingrained in your very being and will always stay with you. The process has changed you forever and no matter what you hear, it will continue to provide its current class with extraordinary opportunities, exciting classes and a totally committed staff.
To the Class of ‘87, we wish you well in your quest. You are terrific! (After all, you are the class that “jumps.”) You will always be part of the Dewey family.” I personally thank you fro your enthusiasm and support... even your willingness to go along with some of my craziness... I hope your senior year has given you a lot of fun....” - Steve Lasky, Faculty Advisor

“This has been a year characterized by change and reorganization. But yours is a remarkable class, characterized by an extraordinary vitality, spirit and enthusiasm. Your involvement in Dewey experience, your commitment to the Dewey style, and your caring to each other is unique in a time of social indifference.
To all who participated and contributed time and energy... ideas and talent... to our year long effort to make your senior year memorable and exciting, go my thanks.
It is our hope that this volume has adequately reflected all that we’ve done and all that we’ve shared. It has been my pleasure to have served you during your senior year and it is with many mixed emotions that I say good-bye.” - Steve Lasky, Senior Coordinator

1984 John Dewey High School Yearbook
Preview full yearbook here
“1984, a year predicted by George Orwell in his famous novel 1984 as the year of “Big Brother”; when people live under constant supervision, with no privacy, no writing, no literature, no individual thought – a controlled people.
Obviously, most of Orwell’s predictions haven’t come true (at least not to the extreme extent which Orwell envisioned). But it will be us – the class of ‘84 – the free people of the future, to keep ideas flowing and a thinking society intact,. It has become our time to make an impact, to continue to grow and to someday look back and remember.
This book we leave as a reminder, “Time capsule,” so to speak, of what life was in 1984. Turning the pages remembering what we wore, how we looked, what we said, where we went and what we did, we’ll smile and think back for a few moments, and relaize that it was all our time and always will be. This then, is our “Time capsule.” - 1984 Yearbook Editors

“The years of high school have been marked by change. Change has touched all of our lives. Changes in dewey have paralleled the changes in us. As political, social, and the economic changes have occurred, so our own physical, intellectual, and emotional transformations took place.
We’ve grown taller; our hairstyles have altered; we dress differently now. We have established relationships with others and been exposed to a diversity of cultures and personalities. We have read so many novels, written so many essays, completed so many experiments, down so many art projects, and acquired so many specialized skills that our vision so ourselves and our options have become limitless. we can acknowledge both our weaknesses and our attributes and have become more mature, responsible, and aware. The totality of our personalities has undergone change during these years.
Our experience here will undoubtedly have an everlasting imprint on our future lives. Having passed through this school with its diverse course selection, teachers and social activities, we have grown and changed into what we are today and what we may become in the future.” - The 1983 Yearbook Staff

“Dewey breeds a unique closeness among all of us. Its very essence has drawn students and teachers together, creating a feeling that cannot possibly be duplicated anywhere else. Dewey life has influenced many of us in our way of thinking, our attitudes and ideas towards certain things. In this yearbook, the staff presents a look back at Dewey life through pictures and words. We think you’ll agree that all this cold only have happened at John Dewey HS.” - The 1982 Yearbook Staff

“John Dewey High School is ten years old. In 1969, when the school opened, some felt its survival was doubtful. Yet many more had faith in this school and its concepts, and the Dewey overcame. It has grown, changed and prospered. Through this book we try to convey the “story of Dewey” from it’s conception to the present.” - Maria Aylward, Editor 1979
