Warm and cool color painting - final project
The name of my painting is “Cool Blues”
Tumblr media
So to start off, the reason I chose this name for my painting was because I wanted to make it a play on words. The overall colors I stuck too was blues, purples, and greens to help assist my mood which overall was sadness. I also used a lot of cooler colored blues. As well as “blues” is another way to describe sadness and I thought making this the name of my painting would be cool. But overall I’m really proud of my outcome. I feel like I learned a lot from the activity and was able to apply it to my final project. I loved all the colors I used and I really hope I was able to bring my collage to life with my spin on it. This is my last post and I hope everyone has a great summer and I thank my professor for pushing me out of my comfort zone to full use my creativity to create beautiful art pieces. And this will also be the last gif I use of mi favorito, Pedro Pascal.

Broken color activity
Tumblr media
When doing this activity, I truly had a lot of fun. It taught me many techniques and I truly got the hang of how to create broken color and have the color underneath shine to the top. I was also able to use what I learned from these techniques and apply the ones I liked most to my final painting.

observational still life (re-submitting for grading)
When creating this still life painting, I was very challenged for multiple things. One being that I was absent the previous class so everyone had already set themselves up at a certain point to paint that area. So I didn’t know what angel I would be left with. That also had meant that I was behind so at first I was very overwhelmed. And another thing is I’ve done a still life painting before and I’m not very great at doing it. But this time, I had more experience with paints and being more confident in myself to achieve it.
Here’s my angle of my subjects.
Tumblr media
And here is my final product
Tumblr media
I’m overall really proud of my final outcome and I liked how I was able to use a ton of different colors and tints to create this painting. One thing I did notice is that it’s not exactly like how the photo I took was, but that was because at first, I didn’t feel like I would have enough room for everything and I wanted to have everything painting proportionally to what was captured in my image. Overall, I learned and did a lot better than I thought I would and looking back at my old still life painting, I definitely see a lot of progress within my work and feel like I’m getting stronger as a painter.

Some of my intentions with my final project is to create a really cool twist on how it could be portrayed. My overall mood I decided to go for is sadness with the sense of tranquility and coolness. As well as I wanted my focal point to be the very center, the planet Saturn. When dissecting this collage, to start off with the ghosts, I wanted that to represent sadness by those two ghosts being all alone and having each other in the vastness of space. I also incorporated the pills because I wanted to show how pills, which could affect your overall mood, like being sad or happy, is used to try to make yourself feel good but really it’s a very bad thing to cope with loneliness.

These were the images I decided to use to create my final project piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I created this collage from all of these subjects
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When creating this, I wanted to add really fun and cool pieces but in the end, change its overall mood of it. I really like the composition of everything and I feel like making the collage helped in making me have an open mind on what I wanted to choose my mood to be because colors aid towards how you can feel in a painting.

When creating my abstract discordant painting, I had an exact image of what I wanted to create and drew it down so l can produce my image.
Tumblr media
In class when discussing the slides and different ideas and techniques of how to execute this assignment, I had figured how I wanted to have a mix of regular shapes like circles, triangles, etc with an organic shape.
When creating this project, I also had to figure out what colors I wanted to use to create a discordance. With my image I felt it was very fun and bright, so l wanted to use colors you represent that vision.

Intro to Color!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was so happy when we finally got to start using acrylic and be done with the oil painting. Yes I felt I did good and learned a lot but I love using acrylic paints. I found it was really cool doing the color activity of mixing the warm and cool primary colors to create different shades of purples, greens, and blues. It was fun to see how mixing a red color, warm and cool, with a blue, warm or cool, created such a different color.

These are two art pieces I found from MoMA that represent low tonal contrast, and high tonal contrast
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I choose these images because I feel as the low tonal one shows a lot of soft colors all blended together creating a calming feeling, whilst the black and white image feels very dramatic, dark, and sad due to such drastic colors, white and black.

Acrylic VS Oil
Here are some questions about acrylic and oil paints that I wanted to answer. One, what are the differences between oil and acrylic painting? Two, can they be mixed together? And three, can you put acrylic over oil paint or oil over acrylic?
So starting off with oil paints, you clean up/ remove the oil color with orderless solvent, also known as Gamsol ( you can not use water because it will not come off, only use soap and water to clean off the brushes). To thin oil paint out, you use medium so you can achieve more of a transparent look. Another thing is that a little goes a long way and its easily spreadable, as well as it takes a very, very, very long time to dry. However, when it comes to acrylic, you can clean up with soap and water. You can also use water and acrylic medium too thin out the paint to achieve a transparent look. Finally, with acrylic, you need to use a lot more paint but it dries much quicker in the matter of second and minutes. Tip to remember is that with acrylic, it dries a shade darker than when initially applied wet.
To answer the second question, no you can not mix acrylic and oil. This is because oil paints are oil based and acrylic are water based, meaning their chemical basis make them completely incompatible.
And lastly, you can paint oil paints on top of dried acrylic but you can not put acrylic on top of oil paints.

So I just realized that I've been making multiple posts on my art work but never got the chance to introduce myself! So for beginners, my name is Jennifer, I'm 19 years old and I'm in my freshman year of college. I grew up with divorced parents so my whole life I've lived in both Queens and Long Island but I still would refer myself as a Long Island baby. I love to play games on my playstation with my friends and boyfriend. I also love practically everything in the arts field. I also am a huge lover of music and singing. I hope that with this semester, that I got to grow as an artist and will remember all the things I learned from this class so I can continue my arts journey.!

and if you couldn't tell, I love to add gifts to my post, especially one of my favorite actors, Pedro Pascal!!!!!!!!

This is the background of my final project. Today I will be adding the other 3 parts to my painting. I will say I struggled a lot with this because I get very intimidated by a blank canvas so I procrastinated a lot before I was able to start painting. But once I got to a certain point where there was color everywhere, I was able to go in and add low points and high points to achieve depth into the painting. Hopefully today goes easier with adding my other subjects 🙌🏼

For this project we had to make a simple, abstract painting but it had to have a discordance. So for my project I decided to create that discordance using these really pretty light colors and use 4 instead of 3. One thing that was more difficult than I thought was creating a blend of the two colors; the blue and green blended nicely but the pink and orange didn’t have the same effect. Another thing that was difficult was getting the discordance colors to correlate. In certain lightings, it would match and in others it won’t. Same thing for if it was wet or dry, so that was definitely a challenge. When making my design, I wanted to use shapes along side an organic shape to make my piece and I overall really like the way it came out.

When making this color wheel, I had faced a few difficulties. One, making sure I didn’t paint over the sections I created, two, creating perfectly even sections, and three, getting all the correct colors. When I was making this, I had to take it home during spring break to complete it. Even though doing an assignment isn’t everyone’s go to activity to do on a spring break, I’m glad I did because I got to bring it to my mom’s house and me and her got to paint together on our deck. While I painted my color wheel, she painted her rocks.
Even though I got paint on the sides a few times, I’m really happy with the end result and it definitely was a much needed break from all the oil paints 😂

I remember when Melania and I had to do this in class. It was in preparation for our final project. It was such an amazing experience to learn how to stretch our own canvases. I will say though, I was very sore the next day. 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The steps on how to stretch a canvas
First thing you have to get your tools you will need a staple gun, staples, a tape measure, a canvas, wooden stretcher bars, hammer and scissors. You will then measure your canvas to be 3 fingers to 4 in order to have enough space to stretch it, then slide all the sides to look like a frame and you can use a ruler to see if all the sides are the same and in a rectangle form also you can now use your hammer to secure your frame if needed. Now lay the canvas down and the frame on top making sure that it is in the middle with enough space. Then you will grab your spake gun and pull tight the fabric and staple at least 3 times in each of the four sides, then you will add more staples on the sides tightly one you get to the corners of the canvas you will do the folding technique with you fingers and staple it. And that’s how you stretch a canvas.
This process was really interesting you will need to be good at multitasking because the part where you had to pull and staple at the same time was really complicated but overall I left learning a lot of new things.

This project we did was another oil painting but we had to use an opaque oil application to create this unlike the previous oil painting where we had to make it transparent. In class we got to mix a dark brown with a white and make a scale of different colors. I really liked how my painting came out with this one compared to the other oil painting because I got to add more detail into this piece and have it look more completed. I also liked adding the highlights and shading to the lamps because it gave it more depth and created more of a 3D effect.

This was the first assignment we had in class. It was also the first time I used oil paints. I learned a lot with this assignment like learning how to mix oil paints to thin them and to use rags to help smear the color to make it more transparent. Even though I did enjoy learning this new art technique, I don’t think I will ever choose to use oils again. It’s very messy and takes forever to dry.

This is our glossary that Melania and I made. We chose these words to define because some of them we heard about but didn’t fully understand what it meant and wanted a clearer understanding of it. And the other words we chose was because we were intrigued on the it was about because the words sounded like it was in a different language.
