A Tense Reunion

Going back to my roots for this one but for a uni project I decided to redraw one of my old pieces, the one chosen being the Phoenix and the Wyvern.

When I made this piece I based it off Dark Cacao and Pure Vanilla, and although the characters have kind of detached from their original media I thought it was nice enough to share.

Ugh ugh ugh harumi is so insane I love her. They broke her so hard it’s incredible! I love the way she needs Lloyd not just because she’s told to, but because on a personal level she needs him so that she can be fixed. She LITERALLY wants him to make her into a person again.

Anyways! The last oneshot gives me the vibes that Lloyd did not know how big the cult was, did not know that harumi eats people so she can take their bodies, and also does not fully understand why they want him so bad. Obviously he doesn’t fully understand his powers, but I get the feeling that the memory is more as a result of the experiments done on harumi than any of Lloyd’s issues.

And yesssss the way they interact and use names deliberately is gonna make me crazy. The three way hate fest between conduit, quiet one, and red? The way the conduit becomes lloyd when faced by the horrors, the way he reaches for Akita and harumi— only for harumi to stay out of reach and for the quiet one to drag him down. Fucking incredible.

I told you Harumi was obsessive! Yeah, she's been completely brainwashed into thinking she's this horrible irredeemable monster for killing her parents, and the Preeminent is the only one who can fix her, which she needs Lloyd for. And having a bunch of broken souls attached to you can't be good for the psyche

Yeah so Lloyd definitely knows about the cult, but this is the first time he's been exposed to it in any regard. He actually does have a pretty solid grasp on his powers by now, thanks to Harumi who purposely summoned ghosts for that exact purpose, but he has always been wonky on why exactly she keeps trying to kidnap him. He's assumed it had smth to do with his powers, and post-reveal he understands that it has to do with the realm crystal. But uh yeah the purpose of the memory is to 1) expose Lloyd to the cult before he ends up inside of it and 2) get everyone ready for Harumi's impending double cross

The hate fest goes CRAZY. It's just a huge boiling pot of betrayal, misunderstanding, and the fact that their relationships in their alter-egos are so different, so merging those relationships is really fucking them up. Listen, when you have a whole fic with secret identities, you go all in with it (lookin at you, Miraculous - that was actually one of the shows that helped formulate this au lmao)

the way that llorumi comes to know each others true selves isn’t by any real like bonding it’s more like this read between the lines telepathic information projection nd like they both have roles to play okay they both have identities that have to be played on and obviously they’re not gonna break first and admit the others right so it’s rlly easy to view their scenes and be like oh green ninja and the quiet one they hate each other but like there’s so much masking and faking it and lying going on youve gotta comprehend that this isn’t rumi and lloyd ykwim

one of my favorite scenes that reflects this is in prime empire when avatar harumi and lloyd fight, and lloyd asks her what they first did together because the time they hung out was feed the poor and one of the follow through character traits of harumi (despite how much she ends up circling back failing at it she’s just a girl leave her alone) is that she cares abt the ppl of ninjago like she thinks the ninja, like the king and queen, are praised despite doing nothing for the people nd in hunted when she dies, she dies protecting ninjagos ppl. so when lloyd says “the REAL harumi would remember that” he means that shit so literally, bc the idea of the charming manipulative jade princess/quiet one is FAKE. and he knows what rlly matters to her, and what her true self actually is.
