Do you guys ever think about how Curly is as codependent on Jimmy as Jimmy is on Curly? Curly works so hard to see the good in Jimmy, and to help other people see that too.
Curly probably didn't grow up with that many friends, and Jimmy took this as an opportunity to delude his sense of what being a friend is, what "love" is like, and continued to do this even now when we see them. Making him feel lonely, and forcing him to be dependent on Jimmy in some way. Isolating him further, ruining his chances of ever talking to someone else, leaving him, finding out he deserves better than Jimmy.
The night time scene about the dead pixel. Curly says that he can't see the dead pixel, but he knows it's there. And that it's going him crazy that he can't actually see it himself, and that dead pixel is a good representation of Jimmy in both characters, Curly and Anya.
To Anya, the dead pixel is a fog, it is a consuming black hole that is always at the back of her mind no matter what she does. And for someone like Curly, it's right in front of him, but he still cannot see it, because he is too busy looking at the bigger picture, even if that is just an illusion. He is seeing past the dead pixel because he believes that there can still be good in Jimmy despite everything.
He didn't know Jimmy raped Anya, he didn't know that. He thought that this was just another one of his spirals, his outbursts of anger, just his usual breakdown where nothing happens, he just gets angry, maybe a bit physical, but Curly has always been in place to take those hits, which is why he told Anya that she should have waited for Curly to do it with her.
Thats why he takes the situation talking to Jimmy the way he does, because he genuinely thinks that this can be solved by just talking it out and calming him down. Curly eliminates all other threats and all other potentials, targets, and victims, in that situation. Putting himself in between it all, to face the brunt of Jimmy's anger and violence.
That it is just him, that it is just them both. That they will work it out, together. Just like always. He gravely underestimates Jimmy's anger because he does not know the severity of the situation at hand, and is in utter disbelief that Jimmy even goes through with crashing the ship, and even when Jimmy is directly in his face telling him he is going to crash the ship, Curly doesn't believe it or think he would because he's angry, because he is just upset, that it'll all be fine, we'll work it out together.
Because Jimmy is even in disbelief that he did what he did.
Curly's greatest weakness was choosing to see the good in people before everything else. To understand that our worst moments don't make us monsters.

Okay, so I finally have time to write down my feelings about Mouthwashing. Especifically, Captain Curly. This gets a little personal at the end - hid it below a cut for those who don't want to see it.
The beauty of Curly's character is that he's probably the most morally gray out of the whole crew despite his intentions being objectively good; his actions come from a genuine desire to do good by all of his crew members, but this does NOT mean said actions are correct. This distinction between intentions and actions is crucial when trying to understand his character. For instance, he believed Anya and genuinely cared about her, but he also cared about Jimmy as his friend, and so he chose to "be good" to both of them, even though being good to Jimmy inherently meant making Anya unsafe - good intentions (be a good captain and friend to both), bad action (not treating what happened with enough severity and being soft with Jimmy because of his biases). Many people seem to either think Curly was simply oblivious to everything, and others even go as far as to say he was actively malicious with his enabling. But I don't think either of these are quite right, and it's because, in my eyes, this man is the living incarnation of "The path to hell is paved with good intentions".
Captain Curly is a people pleaser. He wants to keep the peace, play devil's advocate, everything to keep all members of the crew feeling well with themselves and each other, and he believes his team is as genuine and honest as him. This trust, this inclination to think that things can be solved with compassion, is what earned him his good reputation and the respect of his crew, which persisted even after they believed he'd deliberately tried to kill them. But it is this same desire to do things from a place of true care and act as a mediator that caused him to break protocol with the higher ups' message, fail Anya, and ultimately doom everyone. I don't think he was oblivious to Jimmy's flaws, but rather, like he implied in the pixel scene, he saw only "the bigger picture" and gave Jim the benefit of the doubt because he saw his perceived qualities over his issues despite knowing they were there. Of course, this perception was undeniably distorted because of his and Jimmy's close relationship, which meant he extended an inappropriate amount of trust to Jimmy despite his actions and past because he genuinely, wholeheartedly thought Jim was just misunderstood and what he did was a mistake. Jimmy played Curly like a fiddle by taking advantage of his belief that Jim was as honest as he and the rest of the crew were.
Of course, there is a lot to be said about the fact that Curly put his perception of Jim over Anya - Curly is undeniably an enabler, if a naïve one, and is at fault for the bad decisions he took about the matter regardless of his mental state at the time. He is NOT all innocent, not by a long shot. But at his core, all he wanted was to help everyone and work things out. Because he's *Captain* Curly, and he ALWAYS made it work, and in his sleep-deprived, slightly unwell head, Jimmy's interests and Anya's need for protection clashing didn't mean that Jimmy was an actively dangerous person that needed to be stopped, but rather that he was just not trying hard enough to make things better. This was exacerbated when Jimmy pointed out everything would fall on him as the captain, and he froze, because he knew Jim was right. It would fall on him, and it'd be just, because he failed to stop it. He completely failed Anya, not only as a friend, but more importantly, as a captain, and suddenly his fears of not doing enough came true.
And this is where it gets really personal for me, because I see a lot of myself in Curly. I, too, have trouble examining people's flaws. I let my biases cloud my judgement of others from time to time and allow them manipulate me because I hoped they'd have good intentions like I did for them. I am also a mediator, a peacekeeper, a people pleaser. And I have also been an enabler. Not of things as horrible, of course - not even close - but an enabler nonetheless. And like Curly, I too have had to watch helplessly as my tendency to give everyone the benefit of the doubt damaged me, and at times even the people around me, because I kept on hoping things would work out if I kept everything "going smoothly" but they never did. The way this game makes Curly go from unable to see the dead pixel to being forced to stare at it, unblinkingly, as it eventually blows the whole screen - something HE could have prevented if he had listened to the one person who was all too aware of it being there - makes me very uncomfortable, because I've been there, and it makes me feel bare in a way no other game has done before. The situations I've been in are the size of a grain of sand when compared to the tragedy that happened in the Tulpar, obviously, but seeing such a parallel in Curly has left me shaken and invited deep introspection regardless. You can't fix everything. You can't always play both sides. Not everyone has the will to change and be better. And you must take action before said action is taken for you. All things this god forsaken game has made me think very long and hard about by showing me a man whose fatal flaws, almost the same as mine, made him lose everything and more.

'curlys lack of proper intervention enabled jimmy to continue his abuse towards anya and the rest of the crew and his character is a showcase of how men refuse to acknowledge the issue and take it seriously when their friends turn out to be predators. his inaction becoming the initial cause of everyones demise in the end is part of the games commentary on rape culture and how it affects the victims and everyone around them'
and
'curly isnt an inherently evil person but in fact a very human and relatable character who was genuinely upset with wht jimmy did but didnt want to take drastic measures in tht very moment to avoid causing more harm to anyone bcuz he knew jimmy was unpredictable and prone to becoming aggressive and he tried to handle the situation carefully (altho failed to do so in the end)'
r 2 statements tht can coexist btw

i dont really like it when people dumb down Curly's characterization to just the guy enabling Jimmy. I get that that makes it easier to not like him, so that's why a lot of people do that, because they feel guilty about sympathizing with someone who's done smth fucked up like that, but i really don't think it's giving Curly the justice he deserves.
regardless of if you like him as a person or not, Curly is still a victim and he suffered greatly at Jimmy's hand. Just because he did something fucked up doesn't make him a 'monster' (sorry because i saw someone say that he looks like a monster post-crash and thats sticking with me because why TF are we saying disabled burn victims look like LITERAL MONSTERS- yall use some common sense I BEG)
Dumbing down characters is what fandom does best, but i think it particularly irks me in Mouthwashing because of the nature of the story. Jimmy already thinks of the rest of the crew poorly and doesn't see them for how they really are, we don't need to be doing that too.
I also feel like people don't really recognize the fact Jimmy manipulates and abuses Curly too, even before the crash. What Curly did was fucked up but for the love, don't dumb him down to just this one thing he did.
