Whatsapp Steps Up War Against Fake News

WhatsApp, the Facebook owned company, is stepping up the battle against fake news with a big change that’ll affect anyone that uses the messaging app as it limits people’s ability to forward messages to large groups.

   The idea is that, in theory, it will make it harder for things to “go viral” and will stop the spread of sensationalised fake news.

“In India – where people forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world – we’ll also test a lower limit of 5 chats at once and we’ll remove the quick forward button next to media messages.” the company confirmed .

In the rest of the world, users will only be able to forward messages on to 20 people. The previous limit was 250.

WhatsApp has confirmed that the new change is in response to the spread of fake news and in some cases resulting violence in places like India and Myanmar.

“It’s a challenge which requires an action by civil society, government and tech companies.”

The decision by WhatsApp is a likely a trickle-down from parent company Facebook , which has repeatedly been hit with criticism for its role in the dissemination of fake news.

One of the most serious instances was the perpetuation of the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

Facebook has been used to spread propaganda against the Rohingya people that has led to killings.

  Davido Celebrates Wizkid

Nigerian musician David Adeleke aka Davido posted a heartfelt message to celebrate the birthday of Afropop star Ayodeji Balogun aka Wizkid.

Davido, who is currently in Paris ahead of the Afro Punk concert, shared the message on his Twitter handle @iam_davido, as Wizkid turned 28, on Monday,.

He wrote, “Happy birthday brother!! @wizkidayo keep soaring! God keep you safe! Your children go see you live long. Amen Gbefun!”

The ‘Assurance’ crooner also took to his Instagram page @davidooficial to share a video of himself dancing to Wizkid’s hit song ‘Soco’.

He captioned it, “Happy birthday @wizkidayo!!! Keep soaring my G.”

Davido’s celebration of Wizkid birthday is an indication that they have buried the hatchet.

This is the first birthday celebration that one or both of them have sent open messages to each other as they had a long standing rift which ended in December 2017.

The supremacy war ended when Davido and Wizkid appeared and performed in each other’s shows to showcase their reconciliation.

Meanwhile, fans of the two star artists have expressed their gratitude over the open love shown in the message, with some fans pleading for a collaboration.

@Onyeoma_Donald tweeted, “What about a collaboration between the two of you as birthday gift? RT if you agree.”

@King_naks wrote, “Amen. Strong prayer from the brother. Good heart. Live long and let love lead. Looking forward to your collaboration.”

However, more birthday messages continue to pour in for Wizkid from fellow celebrities and fans alike.

The singer, who started recording music at age 11, has been featured in the 2018 Guinness World Record for his contribution to Drake’s hit song ‘’One Dance’.

He recently became the first African singer to walk the runway for international fashion brand Dolce and Gabbana alongside supermodel, Naomi Campbell.

Laliga- Barcelona Coach Reveals How Ronaldo’s Departure Is Affecting Messi

Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde, has said that Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus, could be a turning point in his rivalry with Lionel Messi.

Barcelona and Real Madrid’s encounters were taken up a notch following Ronaldo’s move to the Bernabeu in 2009 and Ronaldo and Messi have won every Ballon d’Or for the last decade. “Ronaldo’s departure would seem to have ended the competition between Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo because people rarely mention one without mentioning the other,” Valverde told Barca Magazine.

“A lot of people are interested, me too, to see how it will affect Real Madrid’s football and what they might do in the transfer market, and also knowing that Ronaldo is at another club and what that might mean for LaLiga and the Champions League too.”

FG set to review Corps members monthly allowance

The Director General NYSC, Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure has revealed plans by the Federal Government to review the allowances of Corps Members.

Brigadier General Kazaure made the revelation while addressing the 2018 Batch ‘B’ Corps Members deployed to the FCT at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Kubwa today August 2nd. He said government was taking necessary steps to review upward Corps Members allowance.

The NYSC Boss advised the corps members to seize the opportunity available by the scheme’s skill acquisition programme to empower themselves to be self-reliant during and after the service year. ‘‘You are the future leaders and our hope is in you’’ the DG added.

He charged them to be good ambassadors of the scheme and their families with a call to ensure that Nigeria remains indivisible.

Brigadier General Kazaure then cautioned them against unnecessary journies and indecent dressing, adding that they should be security conscious at all times.

Earlier, the FCT Coordinator, Mallam Ballama Bello Birniwa, informed the Director General that the Corps Members had since acquainted themselves with the ideals of the scheme and that the Orientation Course was going on well.

Boko Haram attacks community in Chad, slaughters 18 and kidnaps 10 women

Eighteen people have been killed in a brutal attack by suspected Boko Haram jihadists in the Lake Chad region.

“Boko Haram elements attacked a village south of Daboua,” not far from Chad’s border with Niger, at around 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) on Thursday, a military source said. The assailants “cut the throats of 18 people, wounded two others and kidnapped 10 women”.   Boko Haram’s Islamist insurgency has devastated the region since it took up arms in 2009 in Nigeria, leaving at least 20,000 people dead, displacing more than two million others and triggering a humanitarian crisis.  

Chad, Cameroon and Niger have all joined the military effort by Nigeria to crush Boko Haram. Chad has seen a recent increase in attacks by the group. In May, six people were killed, including four government officials and a soldier, in a Boko Haram attack on a Chadian army checkpoint on an island in Lake Chad.

Omokri Reacts To Police Invading Saraki’s Residence

Jonathan’s ex-aide, Omokri reacts to Police invading Saraki’s residence, blocking his convoy Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to the report of police invading on the Senate President, Bukola Saraki’s residence.

Omokri said what was happening to Saraki was an act of tyranny.

Men of the Nigeria Police Force had in the early hours of Tuesday blocked the residence of the Senate President.

This follows a summon on Saraki by the Inspector General of Police, IGP, over his alleged link to the Offa bank robbery.

Reacting, Saraki had stated that the invitation to him by the Police to report to a station in Guzape over the Offa robbery investigation was a mere afterthought which is designed to achieve political purpose. However, Omokri, in a tweet wrote: “What is happening to @bukolasaraki is an act of tyranny by a leadership afraid of its own shadows.

“You can’t lay siege on the nation’s number 3 citizen as if he is a common criminal just to frustrate the suspected defection of people whose defection from PDP you celebrated!”

Police parade vicious robbers, kidnappers, responsible for the death of ex- Commissioner, others, along Abuja-Kaduna highway

The police in Abuja on Wednesday, paraded eight vicious and notorious suspected robbers and kidnappers, said to be allegedly responsible for the death of a former Commissioner in Katsina State, Prof. Halimatu Idris on 22 July.

The eight suspects were also responsible for the recent killings, kidnappings and armed robbery attacks on Kaduna-Abuja-Kano roads including the  attack on the Director, National Agricultural Research Extensions and Liaison Services, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Mohammed Othman, and abduction of a mum and her seven-month baby.

The police said six of their victims were rescued and the suspects were caught after a gun battle with special forces.

The suspects, Lawal Tukur, 40; Sulaiman Sani, 27; Abubakar Ahmad, 30; Abubakar Adamu, 33; Yahaya Musa, 33; Kabiru Bala, 23; Rufai Tukur, 26 and Shehu Audi, 32, had unleashed terror on road users on Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway before their arrest by operatives of Operation Absolute Sanity. Sani and Adamu confessed to have killed four persons, the police said, adding that Bala kidnapped Rahinatu Shehu, 51, a mother, Aisha Sani, 23, with her seven-month-old baby at their Mararaba Guga town, Giwa Local Government home.

Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said two AK47 rifles, three pairs of fake military uniforms, cutlasses, motorcycle as well as Shedda cloth and other items belonging to their victims were recovered from the suspects.

He said their arrest followed an order by Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris (IG) that those responsible for the July 22 murder of the former commissioner and other heinous crimes in the axis should be arrested.

“Investigation is in progress and effort is being intensified to nab other suspects. They will be arraigned after investigation,” said Moshood.

He said operatives and equipment had been deployed in the axis to ensure safety, adding that the IG has directed the return to Kaduna State, the Police Mobile Force (PMF) squadrons in MOPOL 1, 47 and 61, who were on special duties outside.

The spokesman said: “PMF units of the Squadrons in MOPOL 1 Kaduna, MOPOL 47 Zaria and MOPOL 61 Kafanchan on special duties outside the state have been ordered by the IG to return to Kaduna State to tighten security, particularly on Kaduna-Abuja highway, Kaduna-Zaria-Kano, Kaduna-BirninGwari-Zamfara-Funtua-Zamfara highway and other flash points.” he said.

FEC Meeting Put Off For The 6th Time

ABUJA – THE weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, was put off for the sixth time in the life of the current administration.

The last time the meeting did not hold was on June 20, due to the Sallah Public Holiday but President Muhammadu Buhari used the day to sign the 2018 budget into law.

Although there has not been any official reason from the Presidency for not holding FEC this week, it was gathered that the meeting which was originally scheduled was cancelled late Tuesday night. A presidency source who pleaded for anonymity as there was no authorization to speak on the matter, said that the meeting was cancelled because both President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, were not in town.

President Buhari had rounded off a three-day visit to The Netherlands on Wednesday after meeting with Nigerian Embassy staff before departing home.

He was the only world leader invited to deliver a keynote address at Netherlands 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), at The Hague.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on the other hand, was in Sokoto over the recent killings and violent attacks on Gandi and Katsina where he condoled on behalf of the Federal Government with the people affected by the tragic flooding in Katsina State.

Osinbajo also commission the new ultra-modern BUA cement factory and 32MW power plant in Sokoto. Osinbajo on Tuesday night made an unscheduled stop at the border town of Jibia in Katsina State, where 44 lives were lost following the rainstorms that wreaked havoc in the area on Monday.

A source also stated that the Vice President who stood in for the President at the 10th Summit by the Governing Council of the National Development Summit of Traditional Rulers, may have not been directed by President Buhari to chair the FEC, meeting.

The fifth council meeting was put off due to the public holiday declared by the federal government to celebrate the Sallah, marking the end of the Ramadan month.

On Wednesday, April 4, the meeting was put off due to the public holiday declared on March 30 and Monday, April 2 because of the Easter celebration.

Also on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, the meeting was put off due to what the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said was as a result of the participation of President Buhari and a significant number of ministers at the High-Level Meeting of the International Conference on Lake Chad Basin, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, for the better part of that day.

On August 23, 2017, the FEC meeting which was supposed to be President Buhari’s first after his 103-day medical vacation, did not hold.

This was to allow the Investigative Committee headed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on allegations against the then suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, and Director-General of National Intelligence Agency, NIA, present its report to President Buhari. The FEC meeting of September 6, 2017, was also cancelled due to what the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said was inadequate time to prepare the documents for the meeting.

The two day public holiday declared for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, he said had left little or no time to prepare for the weekly meeting.

‘Our Laws Against Sexual And Gender-Based Violence Must Be Reviewed’ – Governor Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday urged everyone to take a common stand against sexual and gender-based violence by advocating for the review of our laws to provide stiffer punishments for offenders given the serious threat the evil act poses to safety and security of women and the girl-child.

The Governor, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tunji Bello at the 18th Regular National Council Meeting on Women Affairs and Social Development held at the Academy Inn, Agidingbi, Ikeja, added that it constitutes a social menace that must be kicked out of the nation’s social system in order to protect and preserve the dignity of womanhood.

He posited that to achieve social inclusion and integration for socio-economic development, everyone must identify and address decisively issues of gender inequality, girl child education, domestic violence and sexual abuse that have limited the capacity of women to achieve their full potentials and contribute their quota to the development of the economy.

“In Lagos State, the issue of sexual abuse and gender-based violence is being addressed continuously through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT)”, he explained.

He disclosed that the State Government is committed to ensuring the growth of every facet of the economy in every facet and will continue to invest significantly on safety and security as no economy can thrive in an atmosphere of fear, chaos and general insecurity.

He said the theme for the 18th Regular National Council Meeting: “Peace, Security and Social Inclusion: Key Building Blocks for Achieving Economic Growth and Sustainable Development”, touches directly the critical issues that determine the level of prosperity that can be attained by any society.

While stressing that the choice of the theme is instructive and reveals the untold hardship usually suffered by women and children in a state of insecurity, the Governor expressed the need to increase the involvement of women in the social, political and economic activities of the society. He reaffirmed the State’s commitment to a system of governance which does not discriminate on the basis of gender, ethnicity and physical disability, asserting that all citizens without bias to gender have the opportunity to express their opinions on issues especially those that directly affect them.

The Governor explained that his administration believes in empowering the informal sector, constituted by women in the majority, so as to facilitate the process of socio-economic inclusion. He said the mandate of Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) is to identify genuine and credible entrepreneurs and financially empower them to grow their businesses and establish new ones.

Run for your life if your husband is a wife beater —Yinka Olukunga

Nollywood actress, Yinka Olukunga popularly known as Nnenna following her lead role in  Wale Adenuga’s production,  “Nnenna and Friends”,  has advised women  not to remain in a marriage where they are turned into a punching bag.

The actress gave the advice, while in a recent chat with NollyNow.   The light- skinned mother of a set of twins, said while she would not advice any woman to divorce her husband, she, however,  would not tolerate a situation where  the latter is involved in wife battering.

Responding to question on why celebrity marriages are crashing in Nigeria, the actress who got married to her beau in 2014, stated that no woman would want to go for divorce after marriage.

According to her, “ When it happens, I’m sure it’s because there are some irreconcilable differences. It’s just for you to self-guard your own marriage and ensure that nobody tampers with your home. For me, if your husband is not a wife beater, you can stay back and see how you can work things out with him. But if he’s involved in wife battering, that is the one I wouldn’t tolerate. I wouldn’t advice any woman to remain in that marriage. No one is perfect in marriage. But if you can survive the first five years of your marriage, you should be able to pull through.”

Yinka Olukunga  got married to her hubby, Rotimi in Decembler, 2014 and the lovely couple are blessed with adorable twin girls. The pretty actress made her debut in the Wale Adenuga Production’s Super-story TV series as Nnenna. Ten years down the line, the actress, model and singer has become a household name among kids and teenagers.

RAPE SCANDAL: African China loses cool over alleged UK rape scandal

Last week, reports went viral on the internet that since African China’s 2006 rape scandal in the UK, his music career has suffered major setbacks which he has been unable to recover from ever since. But in a chat with Showtime, the popular reggae/dancehall singer who was once a toast of music lovers rubbished the claims, saying, he actually won the court case at the time so it has had no negative effect on his music.

“The UK rape scandal has never been a major setback for my music because I won the case; so why will it have a negative effect on me? It will only have effect on someone who was found guilty, and in my case I wasn’t. I have never had to lose a show, business or refund monies for shows over the rape scandal. I have been investing to keep up with life. Don’t forget I shot the video of ‘London Fever’ in the UK too in 2007. I am a face, a brand for life no one can take that from me”, China retorted.

He added; “After the scandal, I released ‘London fever’, which was a big hit as at 2006/2007. In 2008, I dropped another hit, ‘If you love somebody’, and it was a success. After these, I dropped the ‘Body dey do me’ album, followed by new singles, ‘Anu Gboko’, ‘I want to know’, and many others after which the contract I signed with my management expired.

After a long time I set up my own management team which I’m now using to promote my new singles; ‘Letter2MrPresident’, ‘Amen’, ‘LoveMata’ and many more. So, I’m still working in the studio, traveling, playing shows. I’m not a do or die artist/musician; I will not do otherwise.  I will keep doing what I know how to do best because God’s time is still and will always be the best.”

Student who started walking from midnight in order to get to his new job by 8 a.m. is gifted a new car by his CEO (video)

An Alabama college student walked 20 miles in the dark to get to his new job and this act of dedication inspired the company’s CEO to gift him a car.

Walter Carr, who couldn’t find a ride after his car broke down, started walking from Homewood at midnight in order to arrive at his Bellhops moving job in Pelham by 8 a.m. on Friday. At about 4 a.m., Pelham police picked him up and took him to breakfast before dropping him off at the home of customer Jenny Lamey.

Lamey said Carr, despite walking for hours, declined her offer to rest and had plenty of energy for the job. Touched by his work ethics, she started to help him with his car troubles by creating a GoFundMe page.

“I just can’t tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is humble and kind and cheerful and he had big dreams! He is hardworking and tough,” she wrote on Facebook.

After seeing the Facebook post, Bellhops CEO Luke Marklin drove from Tennessee to Alabama on Monday and presented his dedicated new employee with his personal 2014 Ford Escape.

Carr, who hopes to be a US Marine one day, made the late-night journey after his 2003 Nissan Altima broke down. He calculated it would take seven hours to get to his first moving gig with the Bellhops moving company so he started out just after midnight. He was trekking along Highway 280 when concerned police officers stopped to check on his well-being. After Carr told them his story, they bought him breakfast before delivering him to Lamey’s home an hour and a half early.

Carr says he hopes his story inspires others to fight for what they want out of life, even if it means having sore feet.

He said: “I wanted to show them that I have the dedication and that I always have [it] in my life and that I am going to get to this job one way or the other. I tell people if you think over 20 miles is a lot, then come walk in my shoes because my shoes was really killing me that day.”

‘Never, ever threaten the US again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few have ever suffered’ – Trump issues stern warning to Iranian President

Yesterday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned the United States that it could shut down international oil shipments in the strategic Strait of Hormuz if Washington continued to provoke Tehran. “We have always guaranteed the security of this strait. Do not play with the lion’s tail; you will regret it forever” Rouhani told diplomats in the Iranian capital. The Iranian president has previously threatened to close the strait in response to US President Donald Trump’s threat to stop Iranian oil exports through the waterway.

The strait is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes and connects the oil-rich Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

However, President Trump wasn’t going to be threatened and he responded with a very stern warning to Iran never to threaten the United States again,

Shakayla Denson, 26, threw 4-year-old Je’Hyrah Daniels into the Hillsborough River on Thursday and the child sank almost immediately. Divers searched the river for hours, looking for the child’s body. She was eventually pulled out at around 4.30pm local time.

She was found unconscious and taken to nearby St Joseph’s Hospital but despite emergency personnel’s best attempts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

EPL: Sarri reveals how many years he would like to stay at Chelsea

Chelsea’s new boss, Maurizio Sarri has revealed how many years he would like to spend at the club. The Italian, who was appointed to take over from Antonio Conte only three weeks ago, said he would like to stay at the Stamford Bridge for ten years.

Sarri is the ninth different permanent manager to be appointed by Blues owner, Roman Abramovich since he bought the club in 2003.

The longest anyone has managed under the Russian billionaire is Jose Mourinho in his first spell at the club – three years, three months.

Sarri, who has only been working with his squad for two and a half weeks, admitted that to survive at the West London outfit, he knows he will have to win trophies. He said, “Will I get time to get it right like Pep?

“It depends on the club. I want to stay here for 10 years.

“I know I have to win. And then it depends on the club. I want to stay here for a long time.” Sarri joined on a three year contract last month after lengthy negotiations finally prised him away from Napoli, where he had already been replaced by Carlo Ancelotti.

Davido Celebrates Wizkid

Nigerian musician David Adeleke aka Davido posted a heartfelt message to celebrate the birthday of Afropop star Ayodeji Balogun aka Wizkid.

Davido, who is currently in Paris ahead of the Afro Punk concert, shared the message on his Twitter handle @iam_davido, as Wizkid turned 28, on Monday,.

He wrote, “Happy birthday brother!! @wizkidayo keep soaring! God keep you safe! Your children go see you live long. Amen Gbefun!”

The ‘Assurance’ crooner also took to his Instagram page @davidooficial to share a video of himself dancing to Wizkid’s hit song ‘Soco’.

He captioned it, “Happy birthday @wizkidayo!!! Keep soaring my G.”

Davido’s celebration of Wizkid birthday is an indication that they have buried the hatchet. This is the first birthday celebration that one or both of them have sent open messages to each other as they had a long standing rift which ended in December 2017.

The supremacy war ended when Davido and Wizkid appeared and performed in each other’s shows to showcase their reconciliation.

Meanwhile, fans of the two star artists have expressed their gratitude over the open love shown in the message, with some fans pleading for a collaboration.

WhatsApp steps up war against fake news

WhatsApp, the Facebook owned company, is stepping up the battle against fake news with a big change that’ll affect anyone that uses the messaging app as it limits people’s ability to forward messages to large groups. The idea is that, in theory, it will make it harder for things to “go viral” and will stop the spread of sensationalised fake news.

“In India – where people forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world – we’ll also test a lower limit of 5 chats at once and we’ll remove the quick forward button next to media messages.” the company confirmed .

In the rest of the world, users will only be able to forward messages on to 20 people. The previous limit was 250.

WhatsApp has confirmed that the new change is in response to the spread of fake news and in some cases resulting violence in places like India and Myanmar.

“It’s a challenge which requires an action by civil society, government and tech companies.” The decision by WhatsApp is a likely a trickle-down from parent company Facebook , which has repeatedly been hit with criticism for its role in the dissemination of fake news.

One of the most serious instances was the perpetuation of the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. Facebook has been used to spread propaganda against the Rohingya people that has led to killings.
