alright lover - Parallel Stress
Hey! Look! A record by alright lover! (click picture to listen)
Tumblr media
alright lover is a Craig Pollard thing that has released all kinds of amazing records through the past mostly through the Free Music Archive, but he let me talk him into putting one out on cassette for massive personal financial gain.
The record is 4 variations on a single sample and I can't really describe why it makes me feel funny so here is what craig said:
"The cassette is called 'Parallel Stress', which is a title borrowed from a performance art piece by Dennis Oppenheim. Without going in to too much detail, the imagery of that phrase was striking to me and seemed to sum up a lot of the thoughts i was having...
I had initially set out to make something along the lines of Street Hassle by Lou Reed - a bunch of songs (or one long song in the case of Street Hassle) which are essentially variations of a single song - but that's not really what i've ended up with; there are subtle traces of that idea still in the finished version, but it's less explicit.
I think there's some nice conceptual things going on between the title and the music itself, some themes that overlap and some that contradict. I like how the two interact, and how the title frames the music… the cassette consists of four songs - all of which are created with samples from one single piece of music - which lyrically all address the same thing, (hopefully) giving the illusion of an idea or emotion coming out in parallel, involuntarily exposing itself in different forms. The songs have this type of detachment, or ((other worldly feel)), which echoes the idea of the parallel (and this works as a reference to the original sound source of the samples too…) There is the contradiction of framing this music, so clearly reliant on loops, in terms of anything parallel, and yet the presence of 'stress' in the title simultaneously hints at that tension. And then, this tension or 'stress' might (again hopefully) be understood as mirroring the nature of reckoning with that one thing each of the songs are about - struggling with a particular experience or emotion, and trying to articulate any of it…"
The thing I like the most about this record is it reminds me of the old Arthur Russell proto-disco stuff and that can only be a great thing.
The cassette will be available on the World Wide Web (www) from October 20th and probably available as a souvenir from alright lover concerts from now on of which a special one of which we will be announcing soon (release show i guess)
I am ending this now because my girlfriend just handed me a burrito.
Happy holidays!

Today we’re delighted to be able to welcome back Oliver Catt and his work as Something to our single’s club. Last year he joined us early on and contributed the wonderful Lo;Behold, this year he’s back with a cover of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s classic ‘Moon River’. It feels a bit strange...

FURROW & WYNFORD: THE FALL.
The fall is a collaborative project between Furrow and Wynford in which field recordings were taken from LLanrheaedr Waterfall, these were then looped, manipulated and used as the starting point for a series of improvised compositions. The recorded improvisations are being released on cassette with photogram sleeves and prints of images from Llanrheaedr via ASDFG records. The original field recordings are being used to perform new improvisations at the Hermon Chapel.
ANT DICKINSON: NOTHING NEW, PIANO DUET 1.
Nothing New and Piano Duet 1 are electroacoustic/audiovisual compositions that explore concepts of time, memory and death through unconventional piano performance.
Nothing New (Film)documents musical interactions with a piano in an exposed North Wales field over an 18 month period.   All material was improvised responding to the pianos condition and edited to form a continuous composition.   Throughout the piece the piano decomposes and withers. The piano is still in the field.
Piano Duet 1 (Live improvisation and triggered video footage) is a duet between past and present.  Video footage of a piano being destroyed with tools in the past is synced to a rescued piano being played in the present.

Fall by Furrow & Wynford coming soon on ASDFG records A project inspired by and utilising sounds accrued at Llanrhaeadrs waterfall. The field recordings taken from Llanrhaeadr were used as starting points for a series of improvised musical pieces focused on the audio from the fall. Using contact mics and a sony walkman, samples were taken from a variety of natural sources and then re-imagined in improvised live takes later. The result is a collection of over two hours worth of soundscapes capturing Llanrhaeadrs fall in an audible form.
