This is the paintbrush my group created using a tree branch, blades of grass, paper and sellotape. I feel we worked well given that we started with only very basic materials and we ended up with a durable paintbrush, however if we were to re-visit this task I would definitely look around longer and find better materials to use to improve the look and durability of our brush.

Week Three
In the first session of week three, I was absent, but was informed that the task was to update our portfolios which I did in my spare time. In the second session, we were advised to wear warm clothing and to dress ‘ appropriately for the weather.’ When we turned up for class, we were taken to Peel Park, and did an activity in which we created pieces of art using only materials found whilst on the park. The group I was in decided to create a paint brush using blades of grass and a twig - I feel it worked well for what we wanted, as it successfully painted on paper, although it deposited a little too much ink and made the paper very soggy. If we were to do this again, I would scavenge for a long while across the park and find better materials to use.

I was away for this session, but I took on the mini task given to us whilst away. I was given a Knife as my object, and I had to photograph it but completely ignore the rules of photography such as rule of thirds and checking the brightness. I had a lot of fun with this challenge, especially with being abroad - it gave me a lot more room to be really creative. A picture I particularly like is the picture of the knife on the cactus - as it’s not somewhere I could have photographed if I was at home so it was a change from what I would have done if at home. If i could have, I would have spent a lot more time getting photographs of my object, but as it was getting later I had to spend less time than I would have liked on this task. If I could revisit it, I would change the picture of the Knife in the tree - I feel like that was my weakest picture, as you can’t really tell what my object is or where it is - although this does ignore the rules of photography, so in a way, it did work.

These five photos were what we took as a part of our task. I feel as though they are very cryptic - the fifth photo looks like it could be a pencil, or just a stick, when in fact it is just a wooden coffee stirrer. I love this picture particularly as it’s blurred and very out of focus, which means that from just one glance a person wouldn’t be able to guess straight away what it is. I also love the picture of the tea-cup, as it is a well known disney character and it could make someone think we’d been given the scent of tea rather than coffee. I enjoyed this task as it gave us a chance to think outside of the box rather than inside the realms of reality.

Week Two
Week Two is all about Photography. We were given a smell, and asked to go out and photograph this smell - without photographing the thing itself. It was quite tricky, but fun to think outside of the realms of normality. I worked in a group and we were given the smell ‘Coffee.’ Automatically we thought of photographing my coffee cup - but that would be making it easy for the other groups to guess what we had. We went out with our heads well and truly outside of the box, and got some truly lovely shots of things relating to coffee - but weren’t actually the drink itself. It was challenging, and it really made you think about what represents coffee apart from coffee itself.

These photos are just a few of my personal favourites - even though two of them failed completely to how I thought they’d look in my head. On the final picture, I attempted to create a beach scene using only paint pens - but it ended up not looking as good as I envisioned it. The next time I go for this, I will think out carefully what materials I wish to use and how i’m going to layer them rather than just going straight in for the final piece. My favourite piece, that I feel worked spectacularly, was the pink ribbon fashioned into a corset on the white sheet of paper. I made this with the idea to hit back at beauty standards - although the page looks beautiful with the corset attached, it won’t look nice once it is taken away - it will be disfigured and will never look as fresh as it did when I started. I used this as a dig at beauty standards as many people damage their bodies in order to achieve this status of beauty that the media makes us feel we need to achieve in order to be deemed beautiful.

Creative Risk, Week One.
This week, We explored creative thinking - We embraced failure. We thought about what you can really do with paper. We were given 50 sheets of paper, and told to do something with each one of them. Nothing is wrong and nothing is right - it’s our own personal way to use the different sheets of paper.

After I had shown my pieces of work to the class, In a group we created a model using our favourite pieces from the 50 sheets of paper. I took the piece I believed worked the best, which was my corset paper and added it to the group model. I believe this worked really well, as it shows someone looking at our piece who we are and what we’re like as people, just from a sculpture. It was difficult, as we tried to make a dome to store our creations in, but it failed as it would not hold our items - they all fell out of the bottom. After sitting and talking about how we could make it work, we decided to ball up pieces of paper to make the top of our sculpture represent a brain - which is where the invention first begins - as simply a thought. The next thing on the sculpture where our actual creations - the inventions. I think our sculpture worked well as it was simple and it showed off all of our creations nicely. If i was to revisit this project, I would definitely sit and plan it out properly, and give myself more time to think of something more inspiring and creative.
