Hi! I love youāre banana fish posts! I just wanna ask; when eiji and ash were talking with each other on Halloween night about ashās popularity with girls, did he call the the girls that liked him ātrampsā in the Japanese version? In the English version he says it. Just curious!
Hello!! Thank you so much!!! Iām happy to hear that š
I was working on a new translation and the author literally just mentioned this scene! He actually says āćććŖćć¹ā in Japanese ā he uses ābusuā. Which is also rude, I wouldnāt just go around calling people that, but it doesnāt feel as harsh as ātrampā does. āBusuā is mostly used to say a girlās face is ugly, so I personally wouldāve translated it as āthose unsightly/ugly womenā.

Hi there, I want to ask you if Yoshida ever said that Eiji married and had kids later on post-GoL. Source is this link
https://www.reddit.com/r/BananaFish/comments/jbru8q/beyond_garden_of_light/
Hii! Iām sorry for not answering right away, but I went looking for the interview in her book, which I recalled very vaguely. I also translated some of it, not the whole thing since itās pretty long XD I also apologize for not getting the REBIRTH Guidebook interview, but I think this one was the most relevant, so here it is:
-
Majima: Does Blanca know about Ashās death?
Yoshida: Heāll find out sooner or later. I mean, he knows heās gonna die someday. Since he chose to live that sort of life, it would certainly lead to this outcome, eventually. He might not know when, but itād be sort of like, oh, so thatās how it is.
Majima: What places would Ash and Eiji visit, had they actually come to Japan?
Yoshida: There were many questions like this. Why do you want them to come to Japan this much? (laughs) Please delude your own selves.
Majima: Can he even enter Japan in the first place? (laughs)
Yoshida: Heās on the international wanted list. Heās a murderer.
Majima: He canāt leave the country, either, huh?
Yoshida: Heāll get caught by the Interpol.
Majima: Is Eiji good at cooking?
Yoshida: How should I know? (laughs)
Majima: At first, Ash ate it with a face that said it was unappetising, was it simply that Japanese food didnāt suit Ashās taste? Or was Eiji bad at cooking?
Yoshida: Isnāt it both? Have I drawn such a scene to begin with? (laughs)
Majima: He might have gone to Shorterās place to eat Chinese food. Maybe there wasnāt a lot of Japanese food? Well, is it okay to just answer with āhow should I knowā ?
Yoshida: That, how should I know?
(Everyone laughs)
Majima: So, Iāll move on to the next question. Hadnāt Ash died, what sort of job would he have?
Yoshida: Hadnāt Ash diedā¦?
Majima: There are many hypotheses huh (laughs) also, what kind of life has Eiji been living since āThe Garden of Lightā? Has he become a permanent resident in the US? Does he have a partner?
Yoshida: Wouldnāt he have a normal life? Something like properly getting married, having children, and continuing to live as a photographer.
Majima: He was shown as a successful photographer in the extra story āThe Garden of Lightā, too.
Yoshida: He wouldnāt be able to leave New York.
Majima: What sort of pictures does he take?
Yoshida: People, I guess? Not natural landscapes, but people and the city. Going around taking pictures of men and women in New York, this kind of thing.
-
Yeah. It might not be too different from what that Reddit post had, but I felt more like she simply expects him to move on from that grieving stage. Itās not definite that he got married or had kids, but itās how things would normally go. Yoshida does generally mention they werenāt a romantic pair after all, so even if Ash hadnāt died (and Iām sorry, Iām sure sheās just done with people saying this) would she even make them a couple? Seems unlikely. So considering that Ash wasnāt exactly supposed to live much anyway, their relationship went as far as it was supposed to go, according to Yoshidaās expectations.
I suppose Eiji does give off the vibe of a person who would eventually settle down with someone. Which would be lovely, hopefully he would be able to find someone he loves. But does one necessarily need a lover in order to find happiness? Is marriage and kids the only answer? Eiji helping out those in need suits him, and I could picture him finding happiness through that. So just as vague as Yoshidaās answers were for quite a few other questions, this one also came across as a supposition at best. Iām not at all opposed to Eiji getting married, itās just that I donāt personally believe this should be taken as an absolute truth. Maybe itās likely that he did but, you know? Who knows? As long as Yoshida doesnāt release a new work depicting Eijiās married life after GoL (also unlikely), itās up to you to imagine how heās been living. (Arenāt there many people who unyieldingly believe that Ash is alive? Isnāt it fine?)
Iām sorry for always concluding my posts basically saying āyou do youā, thatās just how I feel about most things XD if I were to give a straight forward answer to your question, I guess itās āyeah Yoshida kinda said that, but then again, hasnāt Yoshida said all sort of contradicting things?ā She might change her mind, she might have said it on a whim, she might just not care ā didnāt she say āhow should I knowā? But this one answer regarding Eijiās marriage and kids just feels hazy to me. The only thing that seemed pretty concrete is that Eiji is very strong, heās always been. He was pure in a way that made him the strongest in the end, and thatās something Yoshidaās mentioned a few times (Iām not sure where, as Iāve read way too many interviews at this pointā¦) Eiji also has a US permanent visa by the time heās holding his exhibition, itās written in āNew York Senseā. And, finally, thank you so much for asking! Iām afraid I couldnāt give a proper answer, but Iād be happy if this helps even just a littleā¦

Today, on July 5th, 2021 is the third anniversary of the Banana Fish anime, in my opinion the best series ever and my favorite of all timeāØ
Thanks to Akimi Yoshida who created the cult manga for us in the 80ās and anime director Hiroko Utsumi, studio MAPPA and all the staff, we were blessed with an amazing animation that stayed close to the mangaās original story and gave life to Yoshidaās complex and stunning characters as well as to her fascinating and terrifying plot.
Thank you for giving us one of the best anime ever created. No anime has ever made me feel so many conflicting and contrasting emotions at the same time. Ash Lynxās fate has moved me like no otherš„ŗš

From the BANANA FISH Animation Artbook
(The last two are just me loving Eiji and Yut-Lung)
I also wanted to apologize because I said Iād be posting scans for the ART&STAFF BOOK right after it was released, but I still havenāt gotten it. I bought it directly from the MAPPA store and someone in Japan received it for me but unfortunately Japan Post hasnāt been sending to my country for months now⦠There seems to be other carriers but they are crazy expensive and I donāt want to bother this person any more than I already have so Iām just hoping things will change soon. Iāll still post scans once I get it, itāll just take a while!

Could Ash have used the ticket Eiji gave him? šš

I just had a conversation about this topic and thought I should lay out all my reasoning.
First of all, does Ash have a passport?
I doubt it. Although being powerful, Dino isn't almighty. He wouldn't risk Ash fly somewhere he couldn't reach him. If he had the boy get the passport to bring him abroad with him (no trace that he has ever had though) it makes sense to me that Dino kept Ash's passport himself without revealing its location. This way Ash couldn't ask for a duplicate without making a police report and Dino would know if he did.
The ticket is for Aslan Callenreese. Would this name have worked?
Aslan Callenreese was adopted by Dino and his name was now Aslan Golzine. The police of New York didn't know his real name, when they were looking for him after his break out from villa Golzine, their files still said "Ash Lynx". They found out that his elder brother got killed but not his full name. For the same reason no one flinched when Dino adopted Aslan Callenreese. The police didn't know that he was Ash Lynx. Plus, Ash Lynx had been publicly announced dead. If he submited a request for a passport as Aslan Callenreese it wouldn't have worked, if he introduced himself as Aslan Golzine he would have been questioned and then arrested.
Was there no way for him to take a flight?
He could have faked his passport. We know that Ash had Ibe's and Eijiās visas faked even though it took a week. But it would have not paid back in anime time because of...
theĀ J-BISĀ Biounit. It is an immigration control system that was introduced into Japanese airports. It is a machine that is located at the immigration booth. When a person who wishes to enter the country and applies for disembarkation, fingerprints of both index fingers are collected along with a photograph. At the same time, the person is checked against immigration office lists, and criminals, people who were previously deported, and other punished foreigners are prevented from entering the country. (Wikipedia).
I don't know how security system works in NY's airports but I am quite sure that Ash wouldn't have been able to enter Japan. He would have had him arrested at once.
As for Charlie or inspector Jenkins to help Ash, this is out of character. They are policemen. Being a victim of Dino's racket does not condone the murder of Arthur and his fellows. His guilt was full-blown in that case.
