spoilers for the dispossessed
i finished reading it a couple days ago and i have been finding myself going back and back and back again to that ending.
no man can step in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and it is not the same man.
can shevek go home again? even if he isn’t killed or driven to exile, can he go back to his family and together live a relatively normal anarresti life? can he find peace? does he even want to?
#the dispossessed#how was it?#you can go home as long as you realised that home is a place you've never been#yes he can find his place on Anarres#Anarres is home to him#but it's not the same Anarres#and in a sense it's like he's starting over

Do you think Gethenians kiss like Humans? Or they "touch-kiss" like Vulcans?
I think it would be cool if they touch in very erotic ways (which we know they do) but they don't kiss like Humans do.
Of course Estraven has seen pictures of humans kissing on Genly's ansible. But it confuses him.
Then I don't know, something might happen...

I love how The Left Hand of Darkness was just pretty interesting and then it hit the 5 hour mark and I literally felt my soul shift like this

Do you think Estraven and Genly empathy-share dreams?
Like Genly has a sweet dream where he and Estraven are living together back in Erhenrang, and Estraven has the same dream at the same time but in his dream Genly is actually Arek. Like you know how sometimes you dream of someone who looks like a person you know, but in the dream you know it's another person. Like that.
#and it takes a while for them to find out that the other is having the same dream#(after which Genly is a little bit jealous)#the left hand of darkness#genly ai#therem harth rem ir estraven

I agree, and there may be other animals like Pesthry and Russy. Also, maybe there are large sea animals that look like seals with thick skin that can be used for stuff like equipment for sledge travels or for heavy coats and boots.
Then again, we know they have synthetic fabric, but even synthetic fabric must emulate some kind of natural fabric in my opinion.
And I absolutely support Tibe's reptile belt!
(thank you soooo much for this exchange I love it)
The real discourse in The Left Hand of Darkness is what you think the clothes look like. Do hiebs have sleeves? Do they look like tabards? When Genly and Estraven talk about leggings in Orgoreyn, are they like ye olde hose but made to keep snow out of your pants and boots? Are they a kind of overpant? I need someone to start a fistfight over what a knitfur is. I think it would be cool and sexy.

I wonder if Ursula Le Guin read Rasmussen's diary before writing The Left Hand of Darkness... The description of the Ice, the joy and hardship of the journey, even the description of the equipment and the character of the Inuit people he meets... Hard to imagine she didn't read it.

It was good to be released from forever pulling and pushing and hauling and prying that sledge, and I said so to Estraven as we went on. He glanced back at the sledge, a bit of refuse in the vast torment of ice and reddish rock. 'It did well,' he said. His loyalty extended without disproportion to things, the patient, obstinate, reliable things that we use and get used to, the things we live by. He missed the sledge.
