"In Northern California, a Native American tribe is celebrating the return of ancestral lands in one of the largest such transfers in the nationās history.
Through a Dept. of the Interior initiative aiming to bring indigenous knowledge back into land management, 76 square miles east of the central stretch of the Klamath River has been returned to the Yurok tribe.
Sandwiched between the newly-freed Klamath and forested hillsides of evergreens, redwoods, and cottonwoods, Blue Creek is considered the crown jewel of these lands, though if it were a jewel it wouldnāt be blue, it would be a giant colorless diamond, such is the clarity of the water.

Pictured: Blue Creek
Itās the most important cold-water tributary of the Klamath River, and critical habitat for coho and Chinook salmon. Fished and hunted on since time immemorial by the Yurok and their ancestors, the land was taken from them during the gold rush before eventually being bought by timber companies.
Barry McCovey Jr., director of the Yurok Tribal Fisheries Department, remembers slipping past gates and dodging security along Blue Creek just to fish up a steelhead, one of three game fish that populate the river and need it to spawn.
Profiled along with the efforts of his tribe to secure the land for themselves and their posterity, he spoke to AP about the experience of seeing plans, made a decade ago, come to fruition, and returning to the creek on which he formerly trespassed as a land and fisheries manager.
āTo go from when I was a kid and 20 years ago even, from being afraid to go out there to having it be back in tribal hands ⦠is incredible,ā he said.
Part of the agreement is that the Yurok Tribe would manage the land to a state of maximum health and resilience, and for that the tribe has big plans, including restoring native prairie, using fire to control understory growth, removing invasive species, restoring native fish habitat, and undoing decades of land-use changes from the logging industry in the form of culverts and logging roads.
āAnd maybe all thatās not going to be done in my lifetime,ā said McCovey. āBut thatās fine, because Iām not doing this for myself.ā
The Yurok Tribe were recently at the center of the nationās largest dam removal, a two decades-long campaign to remove a series of four hydroelectric dams along the Klamath River. Once the West Coastās third-largest salmon run, the Klamath dams substantially reduced salmon activity.
Completed last September, the before and after photographs are stunning to witness. By late November, salmon had already returned far upriver to spawn, proving that instinctual information had remained intact even after a century of disconnect.

āSeeing salmon spawning above the former dams fills my heart,ā said Joseph L. James, chairman of the Yurok Tribe, the leaders of the dam removal campaign along with the Karuk and Klamath tribes.
āOur salmon are coming home. Klamath Basin tribes fought for decades to make this day a reality because our future generations deserve to inherit a healthier river from the headwaters to the sea.ā
Last March, GNN reported that the Yurok Tribe had also become the first of Americaās tribal nations to co-manage land with the National Park Service under a historic memorandum of understanding involving Redwoods National Park.
The nonprofit Save the Redwoods bought a piece of land adjacent to the park, which receives 1 million visitors annually and is a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, and handed it over to the Yurok for stewardship.
The piece of land, which contained giant redwoods, recovered to such an extent that the NPS has incorporated it into the Redwoods trail network, and the two agencies will cooperate in ensuring mutual flourishing between two properties and one ecosystem.
Back at Blue Creek, AP reports that work has already begun clearing non-native conifer trees planted for lumber. The trunks will be used to create log jams in the creek for wildlife habitat.
Costing $56 million, the land was bought from the loggers by Western Rivers Conservancy, using a mixture of fundraising efforts including private capital, low interest loans, tax credits, public grants and carbon credit sales.
The sale was part of a movement called Land Back, which involves returning ownership of once-native lands of great importance to tribes for the sake of effective stewardship. [Note: This is a weirdly limited definition of Land Back. Land Back means RETURN STOLEN LAND, PERIOD.] Studies have shown around the tropics that indigenous-owned lands in protected areas have higher forest integrity and biodiversity than those owned by national governments.
Land Back has seen 4,700 square milesāequivalent to one and a half-times the size of Yellowstone National Parkāreturned to tribes through land buy-back agreements in 15 states." [Note: Since land buyback agreements aren't the only form of Land Back, the total is probably (hopefully) more than that.]

you cannot talk about the homophobic murder of jonathan joss without including in the conversation that he is indigenous.
american indian men are at the 2nd highest risk of death by murder compared to all other ethnic groups. in their lifetimes, 82% of native men report having experienced domestic violence. yet the overwhelming majority of perpetrators are non-natives (88% of native men and 92% of native women who reported violence said their attacker was non-native). whatās more, tribal governments are often stymied in their attempts to bring justice against non-natives, meaning that many of these cases go unresolved.
this was an intersectional attack. the fact that he is indigenous matters, even if the motivation was homophobic, because it made him even more vulnerable and disposable in the eyes of his killer.
as always, look into MMIWP to learn more, and speak up for us. miigwetch, take care

Anti-AI Zine
So generative AI is fucking bullshit, and I initially thought it was just going to fade away like its NFT brethren but clearly not, SO I've been busy
I spent about a year working on this zine about all the ways that current AI tech is undermining the arts, contributing to climate collapse, stealing our data, and just being all around shit.
I wrote a lot about my personal opinions on the subject and included quotes from writers, academic studies, and other creatives, as well as artworks from artists I admire, who I contacted for their permission beforehand. Because it TURNS OUT asking people for PERMISSION is the respectful thing to do????????? Who'd have known... š
The rest of the images were either made by me or were from the public domain (not fucken "publicly available" like OpenAI like to say š¤Ŗ).
If you'd like to read it I have the full PDF available for free on my website here and physical copies are on my etsy here. š
It's been really fun connecting with people about this subject and seeing people speak out more and more about how fucked AI is. Because as much as tech bros like to say that AI is an "inevitable" tech advancement that we can't take back, that doesn't change the fact that we still can and should be regulating the HELL out of it.
Stay safe out there folks, especially Sam Altman cause otherwise he's gonna catch these hands šš

Mob!Hoppers backstory part 3
Warning: language and Scopophobia
Hopper: āwhen I saw her, I felt like an ass. A grown man picking on a little girl who was crying.ā

Hopper: āohā¦um, Iām sorry⦠I didnāt mean to scare you like thatā¦.ā
???: āitās ok⦠(sniffles.)ā
Hopper: āShe was all alone with no type of parent or guardian in sight. I still felt bad so I stayed with her, trying to calm her down. So I bent on one knee to get to her eye level to talk to her.ā

Hopper: āhey, what are you doing out here? Itās late and dangerous out here⦠definitely not safe for you to be out in the open with no one around. Are you lost?ā

???: āyeah⦠I was with papa in town when this big crowd formed and I got separated from themā¦. The crowd got too much and I got scared so I went here to calm down and get away from the crowdā¦ā
Hopper: ā I see⦠so you have at least someone to looking for you, thatās good. Iām sure the crowd has died down since then, perhaps you could go back there and try again to find them?ā
???: āyeah that might be a good ideaā¦ā
Hopper: āshe then got off the bench and got closer to me. She looked me in the eyes, which was surprising considering everyone tried to avoid my eyes.ā

???: ācan you go with me? Itās still dark and your really tall and would scare off any creeps.ā
Hopper: ānormally anyone would have said yes and I would have too at first, but with the way I look and my shitty luckā¦ā

Hopper: āI canāt, Iām sorry youāll have to go on your ownā¦ā
???: āBut you just said it was dangerous to go on my own! You have to go with me!ā

Hopper: āUnfortunately I canāt be seen with you, with me being a sketchy spider to majority of the city and you a normal child I wouldnāt want people to get the wrong idea and think that I kidnapped you. Plus I just got out of the prison and I would for sure go back for life with no trial if anyone accused me of such a crime.ā
???: āIm sure if I explain, papa will understand!ā
Hopper: āwhen I went to look her in the eye and deny her a final time, I saw something⦠something that would possibly seal my fate foreverā¦ā

???: āPlease, come with meā¦.ā
