And they have to do each other’s peer review

Also, just wanted to mention that I can’t claim the last piece with the full-scale Jaeger as my own artwork, since the original 3D model—taking up the majority of the space in the background—was created by テレロン キャシディ. It’s included in this post just to share my mental imagery of that scene with anyone who happens to come across it.

Ah sure, let me flog my dead linguistic horse.

So basically, the word that I am putting as "personal feelings" is 私情 shijyou. And shijyou has two definitions:

But what's that "selfish heart" thing? 私心 shishin? Putting that into the dictionary then we have:

(It's kind of like an ouroboros, isn't it? XD)

But that's also how it boils down to the japanese-english dictionary giving us this:

So, all this to say that the word translated as "personal feelings" has two meanings. 1) personal feelings itself and 2) self-interest. And what does self-interest mean?

I think that it is a fair representation of definition 2.

And that's the other point I keep trying to point out:

And all of this to say: this is the nub of what I've been trying to say. In its native environment, the term shijyou has negative connotations. It is not a neutral term in the way that its english counterpart, "personal feelings", is:

And this has to do with the post I made yesterday, which I'm going to put the relevant extract here:

Well, it’s not exactly “I darn goofed” here XDD, but one also has to understand that using “personal feelings” very much indicates a failing here where he should have been rational and objective about it: “It’s that I used my personal feelings instead of rational thinking”, hence it also indicates a personal failing, that he did something he shouldn’t. Plus the んだ n'da at the end, indicating that he is giving a reason or explanation here.

And to go back 2 steps, I was explaining that the しまう shimau modifier ending (てしまった teshimatta being contracted to ちまった chimatta here) signified disappointment or regret over an unexpected or unintended outcome, “unfortunately”

And I'm feeling generally aggrieved about my credibility being questioned so I'm going throw in another screenshot and a random lesson on this:

And thus, with all of the forces I mean nuances of the japanese language coming together, this is the significance of this line. Him saying that he used his personal feelings to make this decision literally means that he "strove to fulfill his personal desires", this term used in a business, societal or here in an organisational context means not only that he did not think rationally about it and used his feelings instead, but that he prioritised his own wants over that of the consideration of the organisation.

His use of the "regret" modifier signals that this is the meaning we are supposed to take from it, and the "emphasis" modifier indicates that this is an explanation.

None of this is an airy wavy interpretation I'm making because of my personal feelings I am an eruri shipper and want to advance my agenda etc, this is from the "science" side of translation, from the fact that words actually have meanings. In the dictionary. And that those meanings might not actually coincide with their translated counterparts.

And to conclude:

I say that Levi chose to let Erwin die for a selfish or self-serving reason because the linguistics and dictionary definition literally says that he says he did so.

I’m back with more commissioned artwork!! These are illustrations for a chapter called "Chasing the Rabbit" in my Eruri fanfic.

If you’ve watched Pacific Rim, you probably know what RABIT is. But for those of you stumbling across this post and going, "What the heck is THE rabbit?" lol, it’s not an actual bunny. Basically Eruri have to sync their mental energies (stepping into each other’s minds) to pilot a Jaeger. During their first Drift test, things didn’t exactly go as planned. Erwin ended up being zapped into Levi’s memories, and this artwork captures one of those moments.

In this scene, Pacific Rim AU Erwin is trying to get close to Levi, but he’s stopped by some kind of invisible barrier.

Phew, this explanation turned out longer than I intended! A million thanks to the artist who created these—Halero!!!

My second baby step in rehabilitating my drawing skills. The first step (an attempt at Erwin) was a total disaster. This second step looks relatively okay, so here we go!
