John Winchester’s love for Dean was toxic. Conditional. Dean was a soldier to an abusive dictator and he obeyed and sought out that love out of survival and false pretenses. That love would stick with him for decades. It was the type he thought he deserved most.

Mary Winchester’s love for Dean was pure at first. Complete and utter motherly love for the child who made her feel whole. When she died, her love was the only love Dean knew to be true and good at the time. But when she was revived all those years later, her love was brimmed with pain. Longing for all those missed years and unintentionally missing the present. Dean found himself feeling guilty, yet couldn’t get over the fact that his own mom loved who he used to be and had a hard time loving who he was now. It was a love he had to chase, and Mary was faster than she realized.

Sam Winchester’s love for Dean is innocent. The way a child loves their parent or a younger sibling adores their older sibling. It’s attachment, unwavering but tricky. It’s arguments and sarcasm and fights both physical and verbal but it’s steady. Reliable. They can grow older and they can grow apart but it’s always a “see ya later” and never a “goodbye”. For a long time, it’s all Dean had. It’s home.

Castiel’s love for Dean is like nothing else. It is all-encompassing. There are no conditions, no obligations. It is the pinnacle of free will. He doesn’t love Dean despite his trauma or his attitude or his self-depricating ways. Castiel loves Dean because of that and for so much more. Dean is the clear night sky on a long summer’s night. The crisp serenity after a harsh rain. He is the reason the world through Castiel’s eyes is vibrant and gorgeous. Castiel loves Dean fiercely with his entire being. Falling in love so many times over and over again every time Dean smiles. It is infinite and grand and Castiel is ecstatic to spend the rest of eternity making sure Dean Winchester, beautiful Dean Winchester, knows he’s worth it. And Dean, as stubborn as he is, starts to believe it.
