This was definitely a well-produced video. I don’t think a lot of people understand why this video is so relevant and important, not just to us black womxn but to society overall. We are living in a time where you have so many black female rappers taking over the industry: Cardi B, City Girls, Megan Thee Stallion, Rico Nasty, Tierra Whack, and so many more. Not only are these women dominating HipHop but they’re bringing their own sexualities and sensations to the music. They’re reclaiming their sexuality, their freakiness, all of the qualities that make them feel liberated through their lyrics, their visuals, actions, etc. This music video is one of those examples of that and there are so many more. These women are asserting their agency and autonomy and it makes them so powerful, Every womxn in this music video is living their best lives, having fun, enjoying themselves with no man in sight.

Social Media blew up heavily after the music video dropped. There were so many reactions and comments, overall a lot of people, especially black womxn, loved and appreciated this video. It was like this was needed for our time. This video is so powerful, it’s an ALL women cast. There’s different shades of women, different body types, some have tattoos, long hair, short, hair, there’s so much variation. This moment in the video is powerful. JT, one half of City Girls, is currently serving a sentence in jail. So to have these black womxn twerking with a background mural of JT and “Free JT” is spreading more empowerment. There’s so much agency and liberation. All the ass out there and everyone is owning it! No matter how it’s shaped. I genuinely love the energy in this video. I feel so much love, liberation. So many beautiful womxn all in one location one setting and just shaking their goodies, as they should!

Both City Girls and Cardi B used to be strippers, so choosing to include a stripper pole in the video signifies empowerment. It’s intriguing because both artists, as well as many others, are not ashamed of their past of being strippers. They actually own it and take pride in it. They don’t hide it and having this “stripper” like moment in the video where they’re dancing on a pole and shaking their asses is another form of them taking ownership of their past. They not only verbally speak on this but they choose to dance like the strippers they were in the video and be completely care free about it. Having all of the other women around them is just more empowering because it basically says that, it doesn’t matter if you are a stripper. Respect the hustle and respect the grind and I appreciate how these women don’t talk down on the lifestyle they used to be a part of it.

My analysis of this music video and City Girls, and Cardi B, all circle back to a big theme that was manifested in this course which is black womxn empowerment. How do we see black womxn invoke their power and sexuality from a pornographic lens? Cardi B herself is very OPEN with her sexuality both through her music and social media. The first picture above is like a a porn tease, between two beautiful femme black women. Cardi B is gripping Yung Miami’s boobs and they’re both practically semi-naked with their tiger and zebra printed paint spray on them. Both pictures speak to the tone of the music video. There’s so many black and brown bodies in the music video and barely any clothes. A lot of skin is shown, a lot of ASSets are shown. The video is very graphic, it’s explicit, it’s sexual AF.

This music video is LEGENDARY. It holds so much significance and relevance in this day and age. This is the music video of our era. City Girls did something powerful in so many ways and it fits in with the scope of this time period. There are so many female rappers and MCs in the game now, there’s more representation. Black women are taking over the industry and they’re coming different! I find that this music video is a perfect example of the evolution that’s happening in HipHop.
