My late cousin, Michael Phillip, was a stylist in Hollywood, at a point in his life. I was told that he was Gladys Knight’s personal stylist and good friend. I don’t recall meeting Michael, in person (he may have visited when I was very young), but spoke to him a couple times on the phone. I always thought he was so incredibly handsome, with his movie star looks. Michael was left partially orphaned when his mother was called out of her home early one morning, while he was still an infant, to join the group on the ship, the Island Queen, which was sailing to St. Vincent, for a wedding, which many young Grenadians were attending. I think the cake was also on the boat. The other young people going on that trip were determined to have Michael’s mother, Jappe (Jappy) go, because like a few of her sisters, she had an incredible singing voice and they wanted her to sing at the wedding. So, Jappe relented and went along, despite her family’s apprehension. The ship never made it St. Vincent. It simply disappeared. Grenadian parents and families were devastated, because for many years it was unsure as to what happened to the ship. The final verdict was that because it was during World War II, it was torpedoed, because it had a German engine. Consequently, during his early years, Michael ended up moving to Canada with a relative, who had no children of her own and who raised him there. DALTON HARRIS & THE REALEST PEOPLE: I always knew @realromainvirgo was a class act, but this solidified it. If you have been following the journey of @realdaltonharris on the @thexfactor, you will know the recent drama emerging out of the photo that went viral.
