Gerrymandering
Lets start by defining the term correctly:
Gerrymandering, in U.S. politics, the practice of drawing the boundaries of electoral districts in a way that gives one political party an unfair advantage over its rivals (political or partisan gerrymandering) or that dilutes the voting power of members of ethnic or linguistic minority groups (racial gerrymandering). The term is derived from the name of Gov. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, whose administration enacted a law in 1812 defining new state senatorial districts.
The effects are pretty clear in our country. Here you will be able to see the effects of resizing and redrawing that could change and swing the voting criteria. Now this website is heavy on statistical analysis and has some pretty fancy algorithms but if you spend enough time with it you may be able to understand the effects it has on the political spectrum and we can make some assumptions based on the redrawing the “swing” that would occur.
The general consensus is that the majority of democratic votes would be won by the metropolitan areas so that the stretching of rural ( republican) areas is necessary in order to maintain or root out any bias. This it seems is what has actually helped republicans maintain more of their incumbents.
youtube
The video above gives a great explanation although a few years old the principles still apply. The reality is whether you agree or disagree with it, its not going away anytime soon. Bogging down of our courts and the intricacies of the legal system make these topics that are sorely entrenched in our political identity as a country difficult to root out and correct. We have enough issues with political gerrymandering not to even speak of racial gerrymandering. That in itself is another racial composition that fortunately has been improving but is quite clearly visible in many of the areas and districts across the larger cities. In Houston you don’t need to go far to see the segregation in Hispanic, Asian, Black neighborhoods. I will say this, communities tend to stay together and that applies to social classes as much as it does to racial ones. Even more so I would say when the uniting factor is money. Green has its on color.
Do you research. Learn what’s right and truthful. There isn’t always a clear answer or one that presentes the “best” option. You will soon discover that power is convenciene and those that hold it tend to shift things accordingly to protect themselves.

Nothingness
In Les Misérables, Victor Hugo contrasts universal negation with universal affirmation: All roads are blocked to a philosophy which reduces everything to the word ‘no.’ To ‘no’ there is only one answer and that is ‘yes.’ Nihilism has no substance. There is no such thing as nothingness, and zero does not exist. Everything is something. Nothing is nothing. Man lives more by affirmation than by bread. (1862, pt. 2, bk. 7, ch. 6).

Human Needs
Several years ago in Antigua, Guatemala. My father, brother and myself decided to ride a difficult trail in the Water Volcano roughly 30 minutes from the old capital of Guatemala. The views were fantastic and the day beautiful. The country of Guatemala is a gorgeous place full of vibrant rain forests teeming with all sorts of wild life. The kind of creatures you see only on television.
We had three ATV’s my father and made off to the trail. Our ascent was incredibly quick. We made good time until we started to enter heavier and thicker foliage.  At this point we were already several hours in and decided to turn back. Hunger and the prospect of riding in darkness are strong deterrents.
As our descent progressed we noticed several farm workers running up the  in the opposite direction. At first glance we paid no mind to this and continued on down. As we approached a narrow bend with particularly heavy foliage on one side, six armed men machetes and hand guns jumped out as we were passing. I would like to take a moment and say that unless you are a trained professional in handling situations of this nature, you will most likely freeze or do something stupid that will get you killed. The uncertainty of continued life tends to paralyze all but the most hardened or trained men. I understand clearly now why the military places so much emphasis on following orders regardless of “feelings”. Those orders and actions will save your life.
As the men moved closer to us I could see they held the trigger finger right on the shooting position. As anyone who has ever held a gun will tell you. Big mistake! Accidental fire is a real thing.  They proceed to surround us and began to search all our pockets and equipment. I began to pray. I remember kneeling voluntarily. Here your thoughts become very singular in nature. For me it was preservation. Preservation of life. The saying my life “flashed before my eyes” I take to understand something differently. At this moment you ponder death. You wonder how your family and loved ones would react and continue without you. At least this is were my mind took me.
After taking everything that was loose and could be carried easily the men shouted all sorts of profanities and threatened us again telling us we were lucky they didn’t leave our dead bodies on this trail.  They disappeared into the foliage. It took several minutes for us to gather our wits and decide they were actually gone. We made back to our house and stopped by some local law enforcement and explained to them what had happened. Of course there was no expectation of recovering anything or apprehension of these criminals. As we made it back we all gave each other the same look and knew that what had occurred would always be with us. It was one of those moments engraved into the psyche.
I spent many months thinking about this event. The people that robbed us at gun point. My younger brother and how he was affected. My father and the sense of culpability. I rationalized this event in very basic terms.
Human needs. The ever classic pyramid style of necessities come to mind. Better know as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. As the lower tiers of needs are met then we being to look up towards the other “necessities” which can bring feelings of happiness and fulfillment in our daily lives. When our needs are not being fulfilled and society “fails” to provide adequate opportunity, then the basic functions human nature will take over. Here there will a crucial path every individual placed under these circumstances will need to make. Will I endanger my life and that of my fellow man to obtain the basic necessities or will I persevere in some other fashion (i.e. hard work, determination, faith).
Where will that moral compass take you? Will you let society and the circumstance control your actions? Will they drive you to a life of petty crime and eventual premature death?  Or will you confront this obstacle with the determination of a flowing white rapid river, breaking and molding everything to its will with time.
Most people wont know these circumstances until they are enveloped in some event that makes them choose. Forcing that vital moral decision between good and evil. These people made the wrong choice. I pray then that they never have to pay the ultimate price for their decision.

Rise of the Reality Star.
I started this post with an important definition you will find below due to the concern I have over where our society:
Depersonalization  disorder or depersonalization can consist of a reality or detachment within the self, regarding one’s mind or body, or being a detached observer of oneself. Subjects feel they have changed and that the world has become vague, dreamlike, less real, or lacking in significance. It can be a disturbing experience.
That’s right depersonalization is a real thing and it speaks a lot about the people that we currently find popular as a society where our mentality is. It brings up many concerns that as a society we find self conceited and narcissistic people interesting. Maybe they act a certain way that secretly we wish could act like, or are able to get away with certain things that we wish we could get away with.
Your watching someone else live their life while yours is quite literally passing. Every moment seems like it is able to draw one in and somehow detaches us from reality, if only for a brief second.
There are probably a few names that come into mind by now and some may have certain people in particular.  I believe there is a phenomena of curiosity in our country. How could we as a society categorize the skill set required for this career choice? How could we even determine a value?
Are these people more important to our community than teachers, scientists or engineers? To name only a few professions. The amount of money that they are able to make off of this biased fame is impressive. The value contributed for the betterment of humanity.
One could argue their value is more global since they are able to “entertain” the masses. I sometimes questions this value and what really it is that makes this person “special”. When we as a society refuse to give this people attention and focus on the real heroes of time, only then will the economies of entertainment re-align and begin to cater to what we see fit as entertainment. Persistence and perseverance. Change will come but we must demand it. Stop contributing to fruitless entertainment alternatives and focus on the people that really impact our world.

Identity of the Modern Person
Why are so caught up on the notion of trying to identify where, when and how everyone came from?
As a society classification of our heritage, race, and nationality always seem to be at the forefront of every discussion. Every group, sect person has to identify them self in some form or fashion.
There are major sociopolitical implications dating back thousands of years, which would of determined anything from status to increased likelihood of death depending on where you were born geographically. Time period rather obviously would of had much to play in this regard as well.
Is there something ingrained in our psyche then that guides a necessity to differentiate ourselves from some people but at the same time also identify with others?
How often do we identify out of self interest or convenience?
There is a great cause of equal pride and suffrage associated with the principle of identity. Be it sexual orientation to religious beliefs and everything in between.
I would venture to say that there are many of us that would not really care what exactly we are labeled as long as there was no real danger or moral implication associated with it.
There will always be a certain dignity involved with being identified correctly. I will not lie and say that sometimes I am more than perturbed when I am called “Mexican”. Not to identify the people of Mexico with some negative connotation, but the real resentment actually lies with the person speaking and most often than not they are insincere and ignorant completely of other cultures and countries.
There I believe in lies the solution. No one can really have all the answers. As long as we accept our ignorance with humility and take no offence at being corrected or really educated then we can always find ways to understand and respect each other identity.

Futility of the Little Man.
Futility is something that is often associated and defined as utter pointlessness in a pursued endeavor. The last couple of months have been quite tumultuous and its seems now, that as more time passes there is greater disconnect with the leadership and policy making. I believe most of us have very busy lives and have many things going on that occupy our time, money and patience. Managing careers, family and a myriad of other things particular to each and every one of us.
Time is the greatest commodity and luxury that we as carbon based beings can offer and have in this life. What we chose to the with that commodity defines us. There are many of us that make an attempt to stay informed and updated on all sorts of current affairs, but the information out there sometimes seems daunting and the sources unfortunately questionable sometimes.
I constantly find myself asking who is looking out for the little man in this big political arena? Do the policy makers truly have the interest of the common man at heart and at principle?
I would venture to say most of these leaders claim they do and campaign that they do, but from all of the information accumulated, it turns to maters of who and how the bill will be paid.
The common and most often understanding specifically related to lobbying since it its seen here that the majority of the policies take form and are pushed to fruition. The big corporations employ many people. They have self interests to continue their growth which will in turn create more jobs and opportunities for the “common” man. This in essence is not inherently wrong since these companies are better suited to really understand what help they need from the government to help spur growth. The real issue here is when is too much concession reached. As a nation we must always strive to protect the rights and interests of the private citizen. The backbone and engine of this country.
Can we as common citizens really say that we feel the government has the best interests at heart? Do we really feel comfortable that our leadership is currently engaged and plugged in to the voice of the constituents that they represent?
It is not only the leaderships fault. We as citizens must unite and form strong opinionated and most importantly informed voices that can change and mold our system. Choose wisely and vote prudently. Question and comment. Silence and conformity is that what allowed every tyrannical group and leader into power. It is not always easy and comfortable, but that is OK. Being uncomfortable is what provokes us to move and adjust until an acceptable place is reached. Like our underwater crustaceans that continually outgrow their shells, we as a society must continually to grow and find new layers of common betterment for our race redefining this spectrum as many times as necessary maintaining relevance and peaceful understanding with the coming ages.

There’s a university in Sweden where students let out primal screams at exactly 10pm each night. The ‘Flogsta Scream’ occurs when students in Uppsala’s Flogsta neighborhood keep up tradition by stopping what they’re doing at precisely 10pm and collectively screaming from their windows, balconies, and rooftops to help blow off steam and ease the stresses of college life.
