Oh, boy, well, uh....sounds I hate, huh? Snorin' is one of 'em. I dunno what it is, I just can't stand it for some reason...an' there's this one fella at my favorite bar, he gets drunk a lot? An' when he does, he just starts singin', I mean REALLY beltin', but he just sounds awful! I don't say nothin' to him, though, 'cause he's havin' fun an' I can't fault no one fer doin' that.

As fer keepin' secrets...I sure can try, but I ain't makin' no promises. I like t' act on every little impulse that pops into my head for some reason, so I can't say I'd be all that great at keepin' my mouth shut. If I'm bein' honest here, I'm more likely t' blurt out somethin' ya want kept secret at any given time!

an old manor house during a storm (for the creepy location starter meme! I'll be using Sephnit)

For a brief moment, the dark, musty manor was illuminated by a flash of lightning, one that was immediately followed by a booming crack of thunder. The aged windows and decrepit walls rattled and groaned in protest, and for a moment, River was certain that the house would collapse.

"Well, wouldn't that be a way t' go?" they murmured, taking their soaked hat off their head and wringing it out over the kitchen sink. "Squished by an old house...sounds fun."

It didn't really sound all that fun. River was just trying to be optimistic about things, like always. There wasn't much point in being a downer all the time, was there? They certainly didn't think so. Life was a lot more enjoyable when you tried to look at the bright side of things.

They danced away from the sink, humming a tune to themselves. River looked human enough; they had the body of a human, and they definitely dressed like a human would, but certain physical characteristics said that they were anything but human. It wasn't that hard to notice the dark sclera and orange, yellow-rimmed irises of their eyes, or the jagged, razor-sharp teeth in their mouth. They definitely didn't bother to hide their clawed fingertips.

The creature shook their hat out and placed it atop their head, meandering over to a window with a spider's web of cracks in it, and leaned against the sill, staring out into the night. The heavy rain, combined with the cracked glass, made it almost impossible to see anything, but that was fine. No sensible person would want to step foot into an old, abandoned mansion, after all, so River didn't have to worry too much about intruders. Hopefully.

River stared at the kid that had wandered up to their tent, tilting their head in confusion. The kid was tall and gangly, but still shorter than River themselves.

"Who are you?" the kid asked, blinking at River with large, deep brown eyes that were filled with wonder. River blinked back, not sure what to say. They didn't know who this kid was, but there was an odd sense of...familiarity in their tanned skin and hair so dark brown that it was nearly black.

"Name's River," the creature finally responded, figuring that there was nothing better to do than to introduce themselves. They grinned, but the expression faltered when the kid seemed to shrink away from their sharp teeth. "What about you? Got a name, kid?"

"Leo," they answered simply. "...Leonora, actually, but that's girly so I go by Leo."

River was silent for a long moment. Why did that sound familar? Their eyebrows furrowed as they lost themselves in thought, wracking their brain for any recollection of a kid named Leonora. Leo spoke before they could find an answer, though, and they snapped back to the present.

"Hey, you look kinda like me," Leo said, tilting their own head. "My hair ain't blond, though. And your eyes an' teeth are weird."

"What if I told you that your eyes an' teeth are weird?"

"Well, then, I'd say you're wrong, River."

River laughed at that, a jovial sound that filled the air around the two of them and reverberated off of the crystalline trees in the area. They approached the kid, gazing down at them with a soft smile.

"You're funny, kid," they chuckled, earning a bashful smile from Leo. "Havin' a sense a' humor is important, if ya ask me. That aside, though...dontcha got parents t' be gettin' back to?"

Leo cast their gaze to the ground, shifting on their feet. "Don't got no parents. Just me an' my little brother, doin' what we gotta do, y'know?"

River's face fell at that. Two kids, out living on their own, probably in the deepest, worst parts of the city...that had to be rough for them.

"Well...where's your brother?" they questioned. Goodness, they hoped Leo's brother wasn't off on his own completely defenseless somewhere.

"I ain't tellin'," Leo said with a huff, crossing their arms. "What if you're bad? I ain't gonna go tellin' bad people where my brother is."

River blinked. "Fair enough, I s'pose. Well, then, I'll letcha get back t' him. But, uh..." They opened their back and rooted around inside it, before pulling out a few strips of dried meat and offering them to Leo. "Here, take this."

Hesitantly, Leo reached out to take the food, and once it was in their hands, they mumbled out a quick "Thanks," then turned on their heel and left.

"...Weird kid," River remarked when Leo was out of earshot. They still hadn't figured out what was so familiar about the kid, though...
