[he nodded, acutely cognisant of the fact that they were still. ina back alley in the middle of god knows where in the city]
We can walk around here a bit, see if we can find a strong enough signal? Chances are, one of the others lives around here, right?
[lafayette is still hugging him and he's content with the hug, but uneasy, uneasy about being lost and uneasy about being in public. but he isn't risking a panic attack for some mild comfort]
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

Hey, hey, don't worry, we'll figure it out- take a breath.
Take a breath, in for five, hold for seven, out for eight, breathe with me.
[he's bad at comforting people, and he knows it, but he has to try, sucking in timed breaths and trying, trying]
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

[he doesn't pick up on the french, but he does notice their phone is dead, and lafayette's slight tremble to their body]
I... let me check my phone... the city can't be that big...
[pulling out his phone, the bars at the top completely missing, to which he almost gawked]
Try not to get upset.... but I think we're in a dead zone, signal wise... where even are we?
[the streets are quiet. he can't even hear a car nearby]
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

[he laughs, a little uncomfortable with the idea of being lost, especially as the evening draws closer. but surely they can't be *that* lost]
No, no, it's on me for dragging you out to this part of the city then making you give directions. How lost are we, from "I think we're in Albuquerque" to "turned down the wrong street"
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

[he let himself get dragged along through city streets, till the two of them reached a point wholly unfamiliar to him, Lafayette staring confusedly at google maps]
Do you.... Are we lost?

Sure, I'll come.
[the brightness in their eyes is exciting, and he hopes that he can do something that Lafayette will appreciate]

[he’s uncertain at that, being somewhat uncomfortable with heights and not used to... doing normal things, he considers. having grown up being schooled on image and then later being too concerned with reputation to do anything that could be perceived as strange]
I mean- sure. I can try, but only if we can find a strong looking tree around here. Not exactly a lot of trees, let alone grown ones in this part of the city.
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

[he balks a little at it, considering it, blinking a little]
Bit of a random question, but, no, I don’t think I ever did. Used to be a rich kid, remember? It was too undignified for my family image... or something.
Have you?

[he sighed, starting to head through the bookstore]
I think there’s a protest happening today, for... something. They sent a pamphlet to the apartment last week.
[the door to the store atrium into the alley is rusted, and creaks when he opens it, the outside still relatively noisy, leading aaron to cringe]
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

[there’s something uneasy about the bookstore, he shifts a little on his feet]
Yeah, I’m fine, I think we can get through a park through the side alley from here if you’re interested? Or we can just stay here for a second.
[the sound on the street seems to be building, seeping into the building, leading aaron to a realisation]
What’s the date?

That was… a lot.
[the book store is quiet. someone is playing a pop song from a dilapidated speaker. people murmur about books and a teenaged couple giggle in the back]
Are you okay?

[the streets are gloomy, aaron is pretty sure it’ll be raining by the time they finish walking. he leads lafayette down stairs and up an alleyway, both arriving at the bustling heart of the city
people are busking and bartering, arms brimming with big bags. between them, salesmen slowly stalk the streets, sneering at anyone who gets in their way. it’s chaos, and not even rush hour]
God- It’s loud!
[he realises that there is no way lafayette can hear him, so he, gently as he can, tugs at their hand, leading them into a bookshop, where the noise stopped like they had entered a vacuum]
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

That’s perfectly alright, don’t worry. All we have to do is avoid the construction site.
[he’s got what he needs, leading them both out of the house and locking the door]
Onwards, right?

[he let out a breath, hands pausing in their movement, turning to face lafayette. she looks pristine among the mess]
Yes, I think that might be a good idea. Got any idea of what's around here? I only really know where the nature reserve and the supermarket are.
[he collects some of his valuables: wallet, phone, keys, and puts them in a bag, draping it over his shoulder, looking over at lafayette and their smooth composure almost expectantly]
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.

No, no, it’s fine- just, you know, being a single father and working a couple of jobs hasn’t exactly lead to a clean apartment.
[he pulls some angry, red bills off the table and shoves them in a drawer. $16, 341 is still haunting him, waiting for his paychecks to come in. the drawer doesn’t shut properly, but he ignores it]
Do you want some tea?
Lafayette sighed and looked at her phone, this was supposedly where burr lived, but Lafayette wasn't really sure. She looked away from their phone and knocked on the door, hoping she didn't get the address wrong.
