If you think the things folks have written about you and Mush in my letters are odd, then you truly haven’t seen what they’ve said about Jack and me. Some of them write like we’re characters in a penny novel. They know too much, truly.

I'm sorry - I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

Our schools are graded mostly on tests and recitations. Not with letters - at least not in the way you seem to imply. I do fairly well though.

I try to keep my standing respectable. Imma and Abba would have my head if I didn’t. I have to be a good example for Les after all.

And besides, I enjoy learning most days.

Jack doesn’t keep cigars on him, far as I can tell. Then again, I’m not looking for cigars on him and they’re small enough to tuck into a pocket - out of sight from prying eyes and nimble fingers.

If he ran off to Santa Fe, I'm stealing his horse, riding to New Mexico, smacking him with a pape, and giving him a good lecture.

I don’t know how to ride a horse or how to get there, and the mere thought of riding one makes me uncomfortable, but I'd do it out of nothing but spite if I had to.

Still, I don’t believe he’s gone to Santa Fe. Most of his things are still at the Lodging House and Ms. Medda says he hadn't said a word to her. If Jack were really planning to run off for good, there’s no chance he’d leave without telling Ms. Medda at the very least.

Race, I am likely the last person you ought to be taking advice from - no, I am absolutely the worst person for it - but listen:

Firstly, do not find someone else. Trying to distract yourself with another person is only going to make both of you miserable. Secondly - tell him.

If you already feel what you do for Spot, why would some uttering some words make you more attached? Words hold power, but not that much. They're not a sort of... magic or wizardary, a single utterance transforming one's whole perception.

Words can sway, but they cannot fully change. For instance, I'm telling you all this in the hope that you will do as I say, but you may not. Still, I do hope I'm influencing you somewhat.

I’ve already been through every one of his usual haunts - Medda’s theater, the penthouse, Jacobi’s, even that alley by The World he thinks no one knows about. Near every spot he’s ever taken me in Manhattan.

I'm worried. I don't know why he left and I... I dislike it.

Still... thanks for the tip about Queens. I'll head over after the evening edition. Even if it’s just a wild goose chase, it’s better than staying here like a fool.
