From the Sokal fake paper and perhaps the funniest thing I’ve ever read as someone who has a math major/WGS minor just thought I’d share. I know it’s all made up but why is it actually facts??

i'm constantly miscommunicating about the word "sequence" with analysts. these ppl do not carry homological algebra in their hearts
two words that really shouldn't be the same word:
inductive in "inductive reasoning" (philosophy term)
inductive in "inductive proof" (math term)

de Rham cohomology is at least sort of interesting to me (alg top bias) but the Guillemin-Pollack nonsense of stuff like... winding number.... intersection number mod 2... oriented intersection number... and all the theorems that already get proved in an intro algtop course... is the true slog fest. and YES morse theory -> handles would be a bajillion times more useful than any of that.

associativeglassdesert retrospective did yall know differential topology constructions and proofs can all be done locally. in coordinates. and made super fucking easy and boring (i did not)

#do not let algebraic geometers teach that shit#it's still the worst class i've ever taken#i stand by singular cohomology being easier out of stubbornness spite and incompetence#def my mathematical immaturity speaking but a lot of diff top stuff seems easier to think about w alg top tools e.g. intersection form...

if you attempt to read this without working through a significant number of exercises, I will come to your house and pummel you with The Amulet of A Thousand Curses
cursed amulet but it's not an amulet it's a copy of Éléments de Géométrie Algébrique

choosing a PhD advisor is not unlike marriage reality shows. making a multi year commitment on the basis of only a handful of awkward, perfunctory interactions. very small pool of options. something kinda wrong with all of them

your a girl. real men are jacob lurie
isn't lurie a geometry topology type? that's literally woman math. i prefer more masculine subjects like the innovative fps paladins

seeing people refer to greek letters as math symbols outside the context of math annoys me but at least it's not like. "fraternity symbols"
