hello, i hope you don't mind but i have a question in regard to your jewish post (which i, as a muslim, find really enlightening!). if i were to quote/paraphrase a poem with the noun "jew", should i edit it as "j*w" instead? i feel really dumb, i'm sorry but here's my thanks and love to you in advance! here is the poem in question, it is by the sufi poet hafiz. "I have learned so much from God that I can no longer call myself a Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Jew."
You know the muslimrpc recently asked me a similar question and like I said earlier it really depends on the jewish person. Personally, in that context, since it’s not negative, I think it’s fine not to edit it. The reason many jews don’t like being referred to that by goyim is because it can be a bit dehumanizing. Like if someone was to just refer to you as “a muslim” rather than a muslim person. Or referred to your family as “the muslims” similar to those very famous antisemitic statements blaming “the jews” for everything.
In my opinion, no, you don’t have to edit out jew. Some people may feel differently but I think it’s fine.
@diisarmed made a good comment saying don’t edit out jew like it’s a dirty word in general. in the context of the poem leave it as be. in other contexts, just write out jewish person.
