the familiar sound of motorcycle engines broke through the other wise silent day. i sat in my office sifting through emails, attempting to unsubscribe from any letters i just didn't want anymore. the sound however drew my attention to the house across from mine.
like most houses in the neighborhood it was decently big, and well kept, with a gate surrounding it. pretty typical. that couldn't be said for the occupents of the house; they were rowdy and possibly the loudest neighbors, always yelling about something, or blasting music. not really the types of neighbors you wanted.
i hadn't met any of them, i mostly stayed out of their way. truth be told they intimidated me a bit, each wore a black leather jacket with different patches, besides one on the back. pretty stereotypical; a skull on fire with some famcy lettering i could never make out from the window.
despite never meeting them, i knew at least a bit about them;
- one there were six occupents in the house and a dog
- two, one of the guys names was elton (and the only reason i knew that was i happened to hear someone yelling for him once)
- and lastly they collectively made up a small biker gang.
i had never heard of them being dangerous in anyway, but the shady people going in and out of their house was enough to keep me at bay.
i watched as each of the boys walked inside the house, once again trying to make out the text at the top, probably something cheesy and typical. i looked away and went back to idly clicking on emails.
my phone rang and i answered throwing it on speaker phone. "what adam?" i said, already knowing he needed something.
"remember how you love me, and i'm you're favorite co-worker?"
"no."
a huff came from the other side of the phone, causing me to smile.
"listen, tonights going to be a slow night, can you handle the shift on your own?" he finally asked, "this real cute person from campus asked me out, and i couldn't say no, so please!" he begged.
"how cute we talking?" i smirked.
"i think i showed you their instagram... you know, mars, the person from my psych class."
"oh, them... fine, but if i die tonight i'm blaming you."
"i'll remember to clear your search history, and throw away whatever weird stuff you have in your house."
i laughed, "lovely, enjoy your date loser" i grabbed my phone.
"i'll give you all the details tomorrow. and thank you, love you, you're the best.. blah, blah, blah" and with that adam hung up.

i got to the tavern on time to take over for the day shift, slipping into my place behind the bar. luckily the place was small, and most people really only came to relax— it wasn't a party place, thats why i liked working there.
normal customers were already sat at the bar, along with a few that hid in the booths until they needed their drink topped off. over all it was an easy going night.
i was busy getting one of our regulars a whiskey when the bell on the door went off catching my eye, only further distracting me when my neighbors came walking through the door. what were they doing here?
"y/n?" the guy whos whisky i was currently holding snapped me out of my daze.
"sorry, here." i quickly set down the glass and they left for the seat again.
i glanced over to see the group sit down at a booth a few of them grabbing chairs from the other table to sit along the end. if it was a full night i would of had to say something. luckily i can keep to my own business.
the tanner one of the group walked over to the jukebox that was usually never touched. while i noticed one of the black haired ones come to me, i quickly made myself look busy and started to dry one of the cups.
i turned as he got their, "what can i do you for?" i asked, trying not to let the nerves seep into my voice.
up close the man didn't seem as intimidating, his dark hair was swooped to the side, eyes were probably the bright blue i had seen, and his features were soft. nothing that really screamed hardened criminal, or 'i maybe do drug deals out of my house'.
"six of whatever you got on tap," he said, setting down his card, "out it on this for the night."
"i'll bring it to your table then, sir" i grabbed the card and set it next to the others, placing a color marker on it before starting to get their drinks in order.
i felt eyes peering into my back as i got the drinks ready, and glanced back, to see the man staring at me. i quickly looked back at the cups, trying to focus on my job.
"do i uh... know you from some where?" he asked.
"nope, don't think so," i quickly said, setting the drinks on a tray.
"you look... i feel like i've seen you before."
"you been in before?"
"a few times... but somewhere different,"
i swallowed dryly and shrugged. i didn't want them knowing that i lived next to them, even though i still wasn't completely convinced any of them were dangerous... though their company sure seemed to be.
"i'll take it," he said, swiping the trap off of the bar before i had a chance to react.
i watched as he walked off with my tray and hoped he'd bring it back, luckily he did, peering me down the whole time he did it.
it was strange that the man was so adamant about seeing me somewhere, i really only came out of the house the pull my trash the curb, grab mail, or go to work. he could of seen me one of those many times but i doubted enough to know me by looking at me.
i kept up with my job, ignoring the mans looks anytime he came up to get their drinks topped off, eventually just asking for a pitcher so they could pour their own. i had been worried about them being roudy or loud but they kept to themselves, and the guy who selected the songs had good taste.
"alright, cashing out," the man brought the cups along with the pitcher back, which i was greatful for.
"okay, give me one second."
i walked back over with the respite and his card, he signed one of the slips taking the other. there was a look on his face that said he was still trying to figure out where he had seen me before. i only gave my best customer service smile and walked to go wake the passed out customer off my bar and call a cab for him.

a few days had past, like promised adam told me all about his date, and things had went back to normal. i had forgotten about the night with the bikers and went on with my life.
i had the day off and spent most of it catching up on the cleaning i had been neglecting, only leaving the house to take out the trash then check my mail box.
"i knew, i knew you from somewhere," a familer voice drifted from across the street, i froze for a moment before turning slowly.
the dark hair boy had his hands above him holding onto the bars of his gate, an unlit cigarette in on of his hands. he had a smile on his face that i found far to cute for knowing the type of person he could be.
"i'm a little sad you didn't recognize me." he added in a playful tone.
"i don't really know any of my neighbors." i said keeping my voice flat, hoping he'd leave me alone, i turned back toward the mail box, grabbing everything.
"hmm, i suppose i should of guessed, i only ever see you outside when your grabbing the mail. it's my favorite thing to catch, i always try to guess if you're going to be dressed up or still in your sweats."
i turned to look at him, "that's... a little creepy," i said.
"and here i thought i was cute" another smile broke out on his face.
"that you watch me? not really dude." i turn to walk away.
"hey, wait—"
but before he could say anything i got in the house, not entirely thrilled the man not only knew where i worked but also lived. i ran my hands over my face and collected myself to go about the rest of my day.

"gross, hate guys like that," adam said in response to me telling him about the experience with my neighbor that next night.
"i figured they we're all pretty shady anyway."
"still, so bold with his creepiness, then again i suppose most guys are... ugh"
i laughed gently and continued working, once again it wasn't a busy night but it was nice to have the extra hands. the bell on the door rang and i glanced over, nearly dropping the cup i was putting away when i saw ny neighbors once again walking through the door.
the black hair boy glanced at me, before simply following the others to the booth they sat at last time.
i grabbed adams sleeve gently tuging at it. "thats him, the uh... dark haired one on the right," i whispered.
"oh, no fuck, i can serve them if you want me to" he whispered back.
"no, i... it'll be fine." i said, though even i didn't sound so sure of that statement.
the oldest looking one of the group came up this time, once again setting down a card. "just a pitcher of a tap, and six glasses"
i took the card with a 'sure!' and got him what he needed, curious if his friend would come and disturb me. i glanced at the card as i put it with the others. elton cassette indented on it. ah so thats elton.
since elton was coming to get refills on the pitcher i figured i wouldn't be dealing with the other boy. however that was proven wrong when he walked over to the bar and sat down.
"hey,"
"what can i get for you?" i asked.
"well you hadn't given me the chance to finish talking to you yesterday so i figured i'd try here."
"i'd rather not talk to the man that watches me," he said, starting to turn away.
"hey, wait, i didn't say i watched you, the window next to my desk faces toward your house, and i happen to see you is all," he explained.
"only a little less creepy,"
he chuckled, and looked down before back up at me, "you're cute its hard not to look when you walk out."
i stared for a moment, unsure if i heard the man right. he thinks im cute? possibly not something i should be flattered by when he openly admitted to watching me through his window... nonetheless i was.
"right, doesn't make it better," i turned fully, but didn't walk away, getting the regulars whisky and handing it to him before he even set his empty one down.
"i'm colby" he said, when i looked back at him there was only a surprisingly shy looking smile on his face.
"y/n" i pointed to the name tag.
colby opened his mouth to say something however one of his friends piped up.
"colby! common dude, if they haven't given you their number yet, their not going to!" he yelled.
i watched as colbys cheeks slowly turned a dull shade of pink. "well thats... i'll leave you to your job." he walked back over to the group, gently shoving the one that yelled.
"you okay?" adam asked, "you seemed to have had it handled to i stayed put"
"yeah, he was... nice i guess?" he watched him for a moment, only looking away when elton seemed to notice, "go wake up richard his ride should he here"
adam nodded and walked to go wake the sleeping guy at the end of the bar. the last to clear out was the gang, but they left a little before closing, elton gathering his card before doing so.
"don't tell me creepy dude caught you're eye?" adam said.
"shut up, of course not, plus you have no room to judge mr.sugar baby"
"ah! how dare you use my past against me" he feigned offence, as he threw the towel on his shoulder at me.

the boys slowly started becoming regulars, enough so that i had cycled through all there cards and knew their names. jake, aaron, corey, and sam, they'd talk sometimes while coming up to get their pitcher refilled.
i had learned out of all of them corey was probably the friendliest, he'd ask about my day, and cheerfully make small talk.
elton on the other hand rarely spoke, sometimes he'd be in a chatty mood but only said please and thank you.
and of course during some part of the night colby would come over and talk to me, until on of his friends called him back over.
i was closing the bar up when someone walked through the door. "we're closed" i said, cursing myself for not locking it.
"i know, but i forgot my wallet" colbys voice made him turn.
"oh, yeah, i put one behind the bar" i left the table i was cleaning and walked, grabbing his wallet and handing it to him.
"thanks" he smiled, turning to leave, "uh... so how long are we going to flirt with each other until i get your number?"
"i don't recall flirting with you," i said.
"oh... well... uh"
i looked up from the table and sighed, maybe i had been flirting back a bit. "it took you long enough to officially ask though."
i grabbed a napkin and pen out of my pocket, writing it down, before walking over and handing it to him.
"don't lose it, cause i won't give it again," i walked back and continued cleaning.
not hearing anything from colby besides the bell on the door ring when he left.

the next day i had woken up with a message from colby;
colby: hey, it's colby.
y/n: hey! just woke up.
colby: figured, i would probably still be asleep if we didn't have business to attend to.
y/n: business, very specific.
colby: maybe when i trust you, i'll let you in on what we do.
i stared at the text for a moment, i didn't know what else to say, what did you say someone suggesting they couldn't tell you what they did until they trust you? i set down my phone, and went about my afternoon.
i checked my phone a few times, before getting another message from colby once more.
colby: i hope i didn't scare you away with that.
y/n: takes more to scar me away then being cryptic.
colby: oh really now?
y/n: i've had my fair share of bad boy's. kinda tired of them ngl.
colby: maybe i can convince you give one more a try ;)
colby: though i wouldn't consider myself a 'bad boy' per-say.
y/n: oh then what would you consider yourself?
i couldn't lie, colby intrigued me, as much as i tried to tell myself he didn't.
colby: just a guy.
colby: just a guy that wouldn't mind a date with you.
y/n: i don't date guys who keep their jobs a secret.
colby: well, you'll never know if you don't at least try to get to know me.
y/n: fine. i don't have off next wednesday though.
colby: wednesday it is
»»-----------¤-----------««
wednesday came around, i told adam that i was going out with colby. i always told him when i was going out with someone, but especially someone who might be shady, just in case. i got dressed so i at least look semi-decent, and managed to be ready just as colby rang my door bell.
"I know you can hear me through the door bell, if you don't want to ride on the back of my motorcycle you should grab you car keys." colby's voice came through my phone.
i closed the app and looked at my car keys for a moment, something about riding the motorbike sounded exciting and yet nerve wreaking. i walked to the door and opened it.
"so you're motorcycle?"
colby smirked, "my kinda person... you look great"
"and you look... the same"
"ouch, i put on my good jeans."
i shrugged and locked the door as i fully stepped out. colby led me to his motorcycle and got on, i crawled onto the back and realizing i'd have to get a bit closer then i thought i would on a first date... maybe driving was the smarter decision.
"might want to hold tight, i've been told i'm the most reckless of the group." colby said.
i grabbed on to his leather jacket, getting a chuckle from him, he took off quicker then i thought and wrapped my arms around his waist instead.
"told you," he teased.
"asshole, you did on purpose," i spoke over the noise.
"sorry? what? i can't hear you."
i huffed and stayed close to him, linking both my hands together around him, making sure i had a solid grip; i didn't feel like flying off cause he decided to pull something like that again. he drove to a part of town i hadn't been before, pulling into a bar and grill. colby had me get off before parking. i looked up at at the place, it was decent enough, seemed like a rare cozy place in the busy hills of la.
"i can already tell you're judging the place."
"no, just... most guy's try to impress me with over the top fancy places. i suppose this is a nice change is all." i admitted.
"well the foods great, and hopefully you won't mind the company." he smiled, leading us into the bar.
we took a seat in a booth and one of the bartenders set down the a menu. getting out drink orders before leaving us. i looked at the menu, stereotypical bar food.
"i suggest you try to bacon burger, it's my favorite."
"how often do you come here?"
"we use to come every other night."
"why did you stop?"
colby glanced up from the menu, "i forced the boys to come to the bar you work at so i could see you."
i opened mouth to say something but closed it quickly after. i found it cute that he only came to the bar just to see me.
"i suppose i'll trust your suggestion than," i closed the menu, getting a smile from him.
the waitress came back over, setting our drinks down. "two bacon burgers trudy."
"sure thing sweetheart, i sure hope you eat healthy when you don't come here." she said writing down the order.
"well if it makes you feel good, i defiantly eat better at home."
the waitress - turdy - only gave him an incredulous look before walking away. i looked around, at the other characters around, most looked similar to how colby and his roommates dressed, it made me wonder if this was a bar that bikers adopted as their own, rather then go to one of the biker bars around la. i felt colby's eyes on me and met them.
"its interesting watching you take everything in... i always wondered what went on in that head of yours." he said.
"so you do watch me more then you let on." i teased,
"i just noticed you sometimes stay outside a bit longer while getting the mail and look around, so what were you thinking?"
"just wondering if you bikers took over this bar cause you liked it."
"hmmm... yeah, i would say so, trudy's the owner, and its family run so i think it draws us in" he shrugged, looking around.
trudy came back with our food, setting it down and leaving us to quickly go back to tending the bar. i grabbed a fry and looked at colby.
"so... what do you and your roommates do all day? you don't leave often, and when you do it's almost always as a group." i asked, popping the fry into my mouth.
"mainly just handle things," he said, looking at me before looking down at his food, "we sell stuff and strip cars if you must know."
"well... i figured whatever you did wasn't the most honest line of work," i smirked a bit, "but i still went on the date with you."
a smile made its way onto colby's face. with that out of the way we ate and chatted, moving on from his work and more getting to know each other. colby was surprisingly sweet, and fun to be around, by the time we got done and left the bar it was hard to believe i was ever scared of him. i texted adam that i was still on the date but alive as we go to his motorcycle.
"can i take you somewhere before i take you home?" he asked
"well... once i'm on the back i suppose i don't have much of a choice," i said getting on, "you've peaked my interest, so sure."
"sure," he nodded "but, uh... you always have a choice with me." he added a bit more seriously.
"i know... don't worry i don't think you'd do anything to hurt me, at least on purpose."
we took off, once again holding on to him tightly. there was something freeing about the wind blowing through my hair as we road down the highway. we drove quite some ways before pulling off the main road to a side one, for a brief moment i got worried i put my trust into someone i shouldn't have. he parked his motorcycle in a brush on the side of the road and we got off.
"we'll have to walk from here," he offered me a hand, "still trust me?" he smiled, intending obviously to bring me into the forest.
"a little sketched out... but yeah, i hope you don't prove that my judgement is poor," i grabbed his hand and he lead me through a path.
at the end was a broken down looking building, rather big, possibly a school, or a hospital at one point in time, now so forgotten that vines and other plants had been able to take up residence in and on the brick.
"it was an old school at one point, i think an orphanage before that, but it hasn't been used in year." he said, seeming a little excited to show me.
"is it safe?"
"yeah, sam and me come here all the time, elton showed it to us."
"of course." i said, not surprised by the knowledge that all of them seemed to like abandoned places.
he lead in the building, having to crawl in through one of the broken windows, and leading me through, to the top floor. he let go of my hand, but i stayed close by him, not wanting to get attacked by a racoon, or other wild life that may have made the old building their home. the second floor was cleaner then the first, their wasn't as much rubble, but still graffiti all over the place.
i got distracted by a beautiful piece the stuck out from all the swearwords and tags. when i looked back, colby had wondered away from and was sitting on in one of the windows, legs dangling down off the building. i walked over joining him in sitting, looking out the sun, starting to dip in the sky.
"a little unorthodox to bring someone to an abandoned building on the first date, i guess, i hope you don't mind."
"no it's... peaceful," i smiled.
colby looked at me for a moment, eyes flickering from my lips back to my eyes a few times but not leaning in for the kiss, so i did instead, leaning forward and pressing our lips together, the kiss being returned in full. i smiled softly as i pulled away.
"well..." colby cleared his throat.
"it's the police! who's in here" a strong voice said from down stairs.
"shit, that's our queue to get the fuck out of here," he pulled himself back into the building before pulling and grabbing my hand running.
i stumbled for a few steps at he dragged me behind him before getting my footing and being able to keep up. we left a back way, hearing quick footsteps behind us, we quickly made out way back to the motorcycle.
"hey stop!" the man yelled, as colby took off, leaving him in the dust.
my heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest, i let out a small giggle, resting my forehead against colby's back. i took a few deep breaths, the most i had ever gotten in trouble for was a parking meter running out, so running from the police - or at least someone claiming to be them - wasn't really something i did on a normal basis.
colby dropped me off at my place, and walked me to my door, as i tried fixing my hair for the third time that night. he turned toward him, my eyes flickering toward his house across the street. could dating someone who did what colby did really work out? i was hard to tell. my eyes met his and he looked worried.
"i hope that didn't scare you off,"
"takes a lot more to scare me off," i said, almost as if i was cementing the fact i wanted to at least try more dates with him.
colby smiled, and stepped forward, cupping my cheek before pressing our lips together, it was short sweet kiss, the type that left you craving for more. "good, then i can ask you out again sometime?"
"of course... just uh, try not to make the police chase a habit." i smirked.
"i won't promise anything." he chuckled, backing up and grabbing his motorcycle to walk back over to his house.
i watched him for moment before going into mine, and leaning against the door. i grabbed my phone, fully intent on calling adam and telling him about my date with colby... well maybe i'd leave out a few details.
