Tonight, I was walking past A’s room thinking she was asleep when I decided on a whim to venture in to see how she is and kiss her good night. She was awake but quiet. Are you sad? My darling Xuan En, You are developing in so many wonderful ways - you ask good questions about God and often answer them yourself (why didn't Jesus come down from the cross?); you've had a breakthrough with violin playing (playing a piece repeatedly where before you couldn't get thru a line without stopping); you managed to learn to play hot cross buns with both hands on the piano. You are whizzing through the Chinese books with ease. But you are crying almost every day. You wail when you are not allowed to have the books you tried to snatch from Mei Mei, you cry when you're not allowed to go out into the garden after disobeying mama (and upsetting the compost basin); you cry when I will not help you write because I want you to learn to do it yourself. Tonight you said you don't like violin lessons because you can't remember how to play because you "don't really practise." And that it takes too long to learn how to play. Oh, such insight you have! How do I help you practise enough? How do I decide what's important to do? How do I seize the present opportunity to mould and build character and point you to Jesus?
