@ardentelle said: ‘ talking to myself is boring conversation. ’ from x
dion smiled at brigid as she said that. it was quite a truth, to be sure. though dion had been more the type to talk to oneself, he personally found himself to be a rather great conversationalist. even when it was by himself. there were many times in his early life (athens early) when he would be working on his studies so hard he found himself talking about them aloud in his bedroom. he did not share this, not now (perhaps not ever) but he did gesture towards the two dogs around the two humans.
“perhaps true--for some. but, at least, for us, we have dogs to talk to, no? and sometimes that can make conversations quite fun.” he whistled to cerberus who turned with a wagging tail. “isn’t that right, my darling baby girl?”
naturally, in return cerberus barked. he sent a beaming look at brigid. “see? she agrees!”

dion tilted his head at eleanor and just watched her for a bit. he wondered if the wine was too strong or, perhaps maybe they drank too much in the summer night. they were outside and the air was cool in the sun but there was a deep heaviness of humidity despite that. still, though, dion had survived harsher weather than this and he enjoyed summer nights as a whole anyway. he reached over and put what he hoped was a comforting arm around nor and he titled his head to lean on her’s. seth was away and truthfully, giving her some time to relax in good company was most of the reason he came over here instead of going out for a night of fun in town.
he liked both places. nights with his family and nights in the town. a lot of the times, he preferred moments like this. with someone who knew him, really knew him just as he really knew them. and there was an easy familial love between them that brought comfort most times.
“well, it’s been awhile but i’m sure we can get right back to cuddling as we sleep.” dion slurred a bit. maybe he, too, had some more wine than he remembered. but it was a nice, hazy drunken feeling he felt. it was hard to feel anything else at the moment. “and i’ll try not to hog the blankets too much. though i’m sure you’ll just kick me if i do anyway.” he added with a smile.
who didn’t hate sleeping alone anyway? maybe some people preferred it. maybe some didn’t know what it was like to be so used to having someone else there and the daunting feeling of going solo could be scary at times. that was alright, too, dion supposed. but he was with nor on this one. sleeping alone was never fun.

‘ ‘ you know me — i’d love the opportunity to show the kids how, well, cool science can be, but i’d have to field too many concerns from the parents to actually enjoy it, ’ ’ she grumbled as she ran her hands down her face. there were times when things were rather exhausting for her, and her dealings with her students’ parents firmly fell into this category. ‘ ‘ with some more time, i may be able to book a show lab somewhere so the kids can get their entertainment and the adults get their safety. ’ ’
dropping her hands into her lap, she sighed quietly. it was a moot point, mostly; she had made her decision and she would have to accept it, no matter how much it annoyed her. ‘ ‘ thank you for the event, dear, ’ ’ she continued as she reached for her water glass. ‘ ‘ speaking of kids and ledgers … did tessa tell you what she’s been up to, per chance? she’s quite secretive. ’ ’
“well, true. stem is an important field after all and it can be fun! i mean, if i can find interest in it at times, anyone can.” though dion did not envy the fact that she had to interact with school bureaucracy to make that possible. he reached over and patted her arm. “if anyone can make it possible, it’s you.” of that he was sure. he moved his arm away and swiped his own glass. but not of water--he had some lemonade. non alcoholic, of course.
dion closed his eyes and tried to think about it. truthfully, whatever it was that nor was looking for, he had very little idea. he spent time with his niece, of course, but mostly their conversations tend to fall into philosophy and arts. and he was sure nor was looking for more tangible things she’s been up to. “and no, not really. we’ve spent time together, of course. the most recent development on my mind is her hiring rufus to be honest. is is just normal secrecy or are you concerned for her well being?” there was a deep distinction here, after all.

‘ please don’t find her skin when you turn the lights off. ’
‘ i can’t erase it from my mind. ’
‘ i just reply it, think about it all the time. ’
‘ i don’t want to imagine the words you spoke to her that night. ’
‘ you both knew i’d be bleeding inside. ’
‘ did she make your heart beat faster than i could? ’
‘ did she give you what you hoped for? ’
‘ i hope it made you feel good knowing how much i adored you. ’
‘ you’re making me sick, love. ’
YOUTH .
‘ it’s a waste of time. ’
‘ if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones. ’
‘ most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs. ’
‘ we are the reckless, we are the wild youth. ’
‘ one day we’ll reveal the truth. ’
‘ if you’re still bleeding, you’re the lucky ones. ’
‘ most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone. ’
‘ we’re setting fire to our insides for fun. ’
‘ it was a flood that wrecked this home. ’
‘ you caused it. ’
‘ i’m a lifeless face that you’ll soon forget. ’
‘ my eyes are damp from the words you left ringing in my head when you broke my chest. ’
‘ if you’re in love then you are the lucky one. ’
‘ most of us are bitter over someone. ’
‘ i’m forever missing him. ’

‘ ‘ soooo— how many favours am i cashing in when i ask you to help me out with a tiny job related problem? i’m to arrange field trips to let the kids peek behind the scenes of various jobs, and we both know i’ll never get permission to take them to isaac’s lab. ’ ’
it was a shame, it really was. just like it was a shame that auburn’s job was out for, hm, similar reasons and beatrice could hardly show kids her home veterinary clinic. she had called theresia, casually asking if whatever her daughter’s newest endeavour was would be kids friendly, but that had been mostly because she had wanted to know what it was. and theresia had not taken more than twelve seconds to figure that out.
@athensborn !!
a smile grew on dion’s face as nor asked her question. it was as genuine of a smile as it always was when it came to his sister, though. it was almost hard to not smile with her, as long as the topic was kept light and for the most part, job related things were.
“i’m sure i can manage an event like that, nor.” he joked. some people hated puns but dion quite enjoyed them. though he was well aware he could never match the famous Bard when it came to wordplay---he still delved into it at times. “shame about issac’s lab, i’m sure it would be exciting.” for some kids at least. even if it would be out of bounds. “and honestly? i’m quite excited but if you want to cash in some i owe yous, i would be a fool to let that chance go. a lighter ledger sounds fun even if i do have quite some time anyway.”

‘ ‘ it is useful to stay in contact with old friends, however. with the way they moved all across the planet, i’d have lost trace of them by now, even though we’ve been friends— ’ ’ since the 1820s was what would be the truth, but also what she could not say. instead, she would have to fall back to her usual version of the story. ‘ ‘ —since college so by now, for ages. i do think i’ll invite them to visit me here and then i might need a recommendation. ’ ’
by now, they knew quite well what sort of place they should better outright avoid. she had never not felt out of place in the fancy restaurants frédéric liked to go to ( in her mind, she was still a woman from humble beginnings ) and elena’s preferred little cafés were usually also out of question because they tended to get — loud as soon as the conversation gained momentum.
he smiled at her quite easily. he was one hundred percent correct with what he said: he was NEVER picky when it came to company. it was one of his many charms (at least, he thought so). he easily fell into conversation with this doctor because she seemed to be a wonderful person---he felt at ease with her quickly. then again, he felt at east in many different people’s company. though the closest to a homey feeling he did ever get was when he was in the company of nor and isaac. but they were his siblings, so, it made sense. the others who came second were a tie: both april (despite or maybe because of everything), beatrice and rufus.
“well, i’d be happy to assist there. just name what kind of place you want to enjoy for your friends. i will admit, some of them are higher brand than others but there are a few places in town that allow a more...rustic feel, if that makes sense? good, private places where friends from college can meet. or loud, boisterous places where you can experience a stereotypical party.”

* SHAKESPEARE AESTHETICS!
Macbeth:
the howl of wolves. moonless nights. dirt under fingernails. stained silk. chattering teeth. voices hoarse and cracked. rotting fruit. echoing drums. dry heaving. hanging cobwebs. stifling humidity. bloodshot eyes. the roughness of rusted steel. wild rosebushes. muscle cramps. the sound of splintering wood.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream:
crackling fires. ivy crawling on stone. the faint music of running water. petrichor. dirty, bare feet. tattered clothing. thistledown. wilted wildflower crowns. late evening birdsong. curling leaves. a symphony of croaking frogs. drifting feathers. the eerie sound of windchimes at night. humming bees. beds of clover.
Romeo and Juliet:
warm golden lamplight. worn shoes. crumbling brick walls. whispered poetry. embroidered satin. cool, hazy mornings. tousled hair. rosewater. flushed cheeks. distant orchestras. unfinished marble statues. cobblestone streets. loose threads. ink smudged on parchment. tapping fingers. dust illuminated by sunlight. poison vials.
Hamlet:
shattered glass. a cluster of fraying ribbons. unanswered knocks on doors. lingering dampness. white noise. inexplicable drafts. migraines. bleeding ears. the taste of metal. reflected mirrors. dry, cracked lips. the sound of tearing paper. fogged windows. memories of dreams. tarnished silver. protruding veins.

‘ ‘ in my experience, the internet is as much a curse as it is a blessing, ’ ’ she said lightly though inside, she was frowning. she would never understand those who arrived and claimed their pet had a rare, dangerous illness, simply because they had looked up the symptoms online. too many seemed almost disappointed when she told them that thankfully, it was nothing serious. others even doubted her expertise and there was little she could do about that aside from telling them to consult another veterinarian; she could be wrong, after all.
her smile softened as she nodded sagely. ‘ ‘ i don’t really use the internet for more than work and the occasional email to my friends, ’ ’ she admitted, clicking her tongue against her teeth. for the past few years, it had been her new year’s resolution to leave her comfort zone, but — she kept finding excuses. ‘ ‘ for example — my tastes are … varied. thus, most reviews would probably not be helpful for me. ’ ’
dion remembered the days before internet. the internet is younger than him (by many many years) and still it was sometimes hard to forget a time without it with how accessible it is. but that was a thought for another day. or more appropriately, a night where he can spout such things at rufus. “i think a gift and a curse is the best fit description for the internet.” as it was, it made his job both easier and harder. a contradictory thing, the internet was.
“--and well, i may not be picky with company, but when it comes to entertainment and dining, i always am. if you should ever need a recommendation for either such thing, ask me and i will be glad to give you lists. one of my dear friends came here on such a recommendation and well, i think she is happy.” this is, of course, forgetting the Confrontation elena had with rufus, but dion tended to hope she was happy anyway. she was rather optimistic.

‘ ‘ it may be a different town, but it is definitely the same — story. ’ ’ she groaned as she slowly shook her head. she understood, on a level that transcended what most would define as understanding, what teachers and doctors felt. their frustrations resonated within the very soul of her being as she felt only nameless anger whenever she dealt with someone who came to her because their pet was not doing better after they had listened to someone on the internet instead of her. it almost was as if the fact that she had studied long and hard before she had started to call herself a doctor did not matter. ‘ ‘ believe me, i have heard some of the most ridiculous ideas — quite a few were dangerous to the pet in question. i suspect as a critic, you don’t have much contact to these — people? ’ ’
he snickered--he had heard quite some Interesting stories from nor over time. it never ceased to amaze him how people behaved, but still, people were people. he was something of a more...i-spoil-my-dog owner than anything else. he listened to the most part to vets and trusted his own experience for years and years of having owned pets. “i trust that you have brigid, and i send my condolences.” at her question, he paused to consider it. “not as much, if anything, i am the person. being a critic means i either give advice to improve, depending on the medium, or find it well enough. i am expert in my own field, though, as varied as it can be. i will admit to moment of despair whenever i brave a look at yelp reviews. it is something i only do after a glass or two” or more “of wine. i suppose the people’s decisions may vary from mine but some movies are just terrible and are just movies, not film, no matter how big or strangely dedicated the audience. at least several directors can agree with me there.” was he speaking of marvel? perhaps.
