*gripping bioware by the shoulders* what is Bellara's relationship to her clan? her mother is a woodworker in orlais. was she always raised dalish? were her parents? did her parents leave the clan? are they from different clans? is her clan a northern one or did she more actively seek out the veil jumpers? lutare is a family name. what even is her clan named? is she descended from dalish nobility and/or an emerald knight? or does her surname have another source? her combat style implies she was not trained as a keeper. was this a choice on her part or a choice of her keeper's? how did she feel about not being made first, if she ever tried to be? did her feelings change over time? since the veil jumpers are not a dalish only organization (for some reason) how did her clan feel about her and Cyrian leaving for them? how did literally any of this affect her relationship with Cyrian? how does none of this ever come up even through implication even once? can i have a single answer to any one of these questions? please. please. ple

today i’m thinking about how the despair demons tend to single rook out and how the first time this is recognized is after the treviso/minrathous decision

like, listen. i know it’s probably just a game mechanic thing. but it’s interesting to me that every despair demon in the game does this—single rook out. and how you encounter a lot more despair demons the worse the situation gets. and every single time, without fail, rook is their primary target.

like. the potential juiciness of it all. rook who carries regrets and despair hidden behind a smile that no one can see behind until the regret prison. rook who has to keep up a brave face as the leader so that the team doesn’t collapse because someone has to make a decision.

I wish there was a narratively satisfying way to justify picking Sten to fight Loghain over the Warden and Alistair because the way he responds to getting chosen for the duel by actually smiling a little, saying "Finally" like his sole goal in life has been to beat Loghain to death in front of a live studio audience and then heading off for that standoff/quickdraw cutscene is very cool

i don't think "rook is too much of a blank slate" and "rook is too stuck in a set personality/character" are really that contradictory. like rook's assumed personality is... quite generic, really, this friendly quippy Good Guy who at the same time never expresses real opinions that are grounded in the world and their place in it. everyy time i go back to look at a dak-wai clip, any time there's a line i didn't have direct control over, i have to frown and go They would not fucking say that.

i think the implementation of faction/race reactivity is pretty indicative of the problem, where by necessity every faction has a Backstory Incident with the same beats, but apart from mercar and ingellvar being adopted (which is just an even more intense blank slate, really) you don't have any information about rook's background/upbringing to inform the character you're creating. until your lord of fortune rook says they used to be a galley slave out of nowhere but there was nothing that indicated this to you before this, and then the moment is past and you can't play rook as someone who is affected and informed by this experience. your qunari rook will without your input comment on how it feels to be vashoth while talking with taash, and then the moment's over and you can't bring it up in any dialogue apart from that. they're already written as a generic character who doesn't have a personal investment in anything other than their faction, maybe. worst of both worlds approach
