thinking about how cat felt so estranged and out of place in winterfell when she first married ned, and then in ASOS she wants nothing more than to ride back to winterfell, “to home.”

“The thought of Winterfell brought a wan smile to his face. He wanted to hear Bran's laughter once more, to go hawking with Robb, to watch Rickon at play.”

grrm the funniest in the world bc agot kinda falls apart when you think about how ned stark should have had a huge retinue come with him to kings landing AND there should have just been plenty of jon arryn’s ppl up in there who would have been on ned’s side from the get ( i mean unless u wanna play up the idea of them all going back to the vale once jon is kaput) and the. grrm sort of addresses this by giving us the tyrell court but its like… lmao
now to be fair, he does do some like ~world building~ later to kind of fix this and give us some explanations like you say, and not just with the tyrells - i think part of why jon arryn doesn't leave behind any of his own people when he dies is because all of his people are petyr's people, so they are inherently not trustworthy and by the time ned comes to the capital it's been weeks since jon arryn died and petyr has fully taken jon arryn's people in as his own. and it's not just the tyrells who show up with their own court - the martells do as well and of course ned makes notes of how many lannisters there are in the capital because cersei has her own faction there too!
of course all of that just makes ned look SO FUCKING GOOFY especially when you factor in who he had at his disposal - wyman manderly & hothor umber alone would have gone so fucking far in helping ned out, and i do imagine part of why they are both so active in winterfell by adwd is because they're being set up for something regarding the starklings succession - as in, the starklings have close allies by their side instead of just wandering off with two kids, an underpaid intern, and a nanny like ned did.
it would be a realy interesting exercise though, to like, rewrite agot but where ned takes a court with him to the south...but still ultimately attempting to get him in the same spot where he's killed and the girls are separated.

i think having show marg seduce tommen and encourage sansa to sleep with tyrion worked to normalize her situation in KL... they didn't get sansa OR margaery at all
wait i actually think this kinda ties into what i was saying about sansa & ramsay, in that i think d&d saw this less as "sansa is handed over to yet another abusive monster" but more "sansa plays the game of thrones and loses and faces the consequences and grows stronger" and i do think this trickled into her time in king's landing too. like first of all, it's why they cut so much of her scenes - if they show her actively planning with dontos to escape, if they show her charming garlan & leonette even after olenna has purposefuly broken the alliance between them, if they show her just having a conversation with sandor on her own rather than littlefucker whispering in her ear...all of this is sansa being active, pushing at the limits of what she can do, trying to cope with the situation she's been forced into, taking note of allies and false friends and the reactions of the people around her. they didn't like that though! they wanted her to be The Victim and imo they wanted to portray it as "sansa is so silly and stupid and bad at politics but she has to suffer to grow" which is so annoying!! she does learn from what she's experienced but in the books, imo, the books are not setting this up explicitly as like "this is punishment for being naive" because that's dumb and simplistic! But that's how it is in the show!!
and the margaery-tommen stuff, god, first of all, really just shows they don't understand margaery because margaery knows how to seduce without sex, she literally does it in the book!!! but it also just, really changes her dynamic with cersei because the thing is margaery is fucking cersei's underage son and taking advantage of him!! it's a huge change!!!

Fancasts From Atop Visenya’s Hill
-> Lise Slabber as Johanna Swann, the Black Swan of Lys
Amongst those thus enslaved was Lady Johanna Swann, a fifteen-year-old niece of the Lord of Stonehelm. When her infamously niggardly uncle refused to pay the ransom, she was sold to a pillow house, where she rose to become the celebrated courtesan known as the Black Swan, and ruler of Lys in all but name.

i have multiple “jon & catelyn wind up being friendly” aus on my mind but i don’t talk about them bc unfortunately i think the easiest way to get jon & catelyn to get along is to put them in a situation where they get to be a little evil together
#also one of them was born from me reading something & getting pissed off & i think it’s too obvious that’s what it’s about lol#getting on my soap box
