Korean Sentence Structure (Part Two)
Welcome to the second part of Korean sentence structure! In this lesson we'll cover the placement of adjectives and adverbs in Korean sentences. We'll be adding on to our sentence from part one, so I suggest looking at part one first if you haven't already. (You can find it in the "sentence structure" tag of this blog!)
형용사 - Adjectives
Just like in English, an adjective comes before the noun it describes in Korean. Let's look at this on its own before putting it into a full sentence.
English = adjective + object -> red apple
Korean = adjective + object -> 빨간 사과
Now, let's add this into the sentence we formed in part one.
English = subject + verb + adjective + object -> The man eats red apples.
Korean = subject + adjective + object + verb -> 남자는 빨간 사과를 먹어요.
부사 - Adverbs
In English, an adverb generally comes before the verb it describes, but it can also come at the end of the sentence. In Korean, however, the adverb always comes directly before the verb.
English = subject + adverb + verb + adjective + object -> The man happily eats red apples.
OR
English = subject + verb + adjective + object + adverb -> The man eats red apples happily.
Korean = subject + adjective + object + adverb + verb -> 남자는 빨간 사과를 행복하게 먹어요.
*Note: Many (but not all) Korean adverbs can be formed be adding 게 to the end of a descriptive verb stem. For example, the descriptive verb 행복하다 means "to be happy." Remove the 다 and add 게 to get the adverb 행복하게, which means "happily."
More Examples
The woman reads. 여자는 읽어요.
The woman reads a book. 여자는 책을 읽어요.
The woman reads a big book. 여자는 큰 책을 읽어요.
The woman slowly reads a big book. 여자는 큰 책을 천천히 읽어요.
That's all for now! In part three we'll go over the placement of time and location.

Hey, I have a question. I always thought that 'gibbum' meant happiness. I remember hearing it in a kdrama and linking the word to that meaning. The thing is, I don't know how you spell it in Korean (I'm guessing 기뻠) so I can't check on Papago. When I type happiness on Papago it gives me 행복, which I know is another variant. My question is, what does 'gibbum' mean? And if it does mean happiness, what is the difference between that and 행복? Thank you ❣
Hi! The word you’re talking about is actually spelled 기쁨 (ki-bbeum). This means “happiness” or “joy,” since 기쁘다 means “to be glad,” “to be delighted,” or “to be happy.” This differs from 행복하다, which also means “to be happy” or “to be content.” But 행복하다 refers to more general general happiness, as in like happiness with your life, or happiness with a relationship you’re in or something like that. Think more satisfaction with your situation in general. 기쁘다, on the other hand, is more like an emotion that you feel in a certain moment. Let’s look at some examples:
제 돈이 많이 없어도 행복해요. = Even though I don’t have a lot of money, I am happy.
Notice how this is referring to satisfaction with your life as a whole.
(from Naver Dictionary) 그 말을 들으니 기뻐요. = I am happy to hear that.
Notice how this refers to a certain emotion that you feel in a particular moment -- someone said something that pleases you.
Hope this helped! 화이팅!

Hi! Why do people say 겁나 if they’re describing something scary but say 겁나 재미있어 or 겁나 귀여워 for saying something is very + adjective?
Hi! 겁나 is a slang term similar to the English word “freaking.” 겁나 귀여워 would mean “freaking cute” and 겁나 재미있어 would mean “freaking fun” for example. But sometimes I guess it sounds more nature to translate it as “very” rather than “freaking” lol. Hope this helped!

우리 - we, us, our (and my)
(anon) asked: why sometimes I hear 오리 when people refer to something that isn’t owned by them? Like 오리 학교? Doesn’t it just mean we? I have seen it as my as well but now I’m just really confused. thank you
Thank you for sending this ask! I’ve gotten a few asks like this and some (private), so I’m glad I haven’t lost touch with my followers <3 Remember, if you want to send an ask, go here to find out more info!
To answer your question anon, 우리 is a way to say we, us, and our in Korean (오리 means ‘duck’). As you’ve seen, it isn’t limited to this translation. However, I will say, try not to think of it as a replacement we / us / our to ‘my’. What I’m trying to say is that it only means “my” in certain context.
Ex. 우리나라 - my country
In this context, you are expressing that it’s your country, but it’s also the listener’s country. In an easier context, it just means “we / us / our”.
우리 + 의 (possessive particle) = our 우리 + 들 (plural particle) = us 우리 + ∅ (null / nothing) = we
Examples: 1. 우리는 겨우 1년 전에 만났어요 - we just met 1 (one) year ago 2. 우리의 점심 시간이 그녀의 점심 시간보다 더 길어요 - our lunchtime is longer than hers 3. 아들은 우리들에게 매주 편지를 써 보내요 - our son writes to us every week
I hope this answered your question! It’s common to hear someone attach 우리 for the listener, it’s also a way to bring the listener and speaker closer together. If you’re still confused or would like to ask for clarification, then don’t hesitate to ask or a message, I’m always here to help! Happy Learning :)
**You can also use the formal version of “our”: 저희, but sometimes it’s more natural to just say “우리”

Tag-list for “Enchanted To Meet You”
Reblog this post if you would like to be added to the tag-list of my OT7xReader BTS fic ‘Enchanted To Meet You’ (Tag-list will be closed soon)
Thank you.

Summary: This could potentially be a mistake. This is probably a mistake. You should turn back now, go home, snuggle under some warm blankets, watch a few K-pop videos on YouTube and then go off to dreamland instead of doing what you are about to do.
BTS is on a hiatus and everybody thinks they are completing their mandatory military service. You believe that too, at least you did, until you realised that you had adopted them and that one way or another they were going to live with you—as Hybrids; because apparently you all are soulmates.

so i just woke up to the news of goo hara’s passing. she was a south korean singer and actress, only twenty-eight years old. this is coming right after hearing about sulli’s passing just about a month ago. in 2017, the lead singer of shinee, kim jonghyun passed away at just twenty-seven years old, followed by actor jeon tae soo’s suicide in 2018, actress jeon mi seon in 2019. this problem isn’t just found in south korea, but i’m writing after seeing the news this morning.
there have been more than 200 celebrity suicides in the 21st century. the afsp published that in 2017, 47,173 americans died by suicide. there were about 1,400,000 attempts. the people who are dying are not just “our family, friends, teachers, etc.” they’re other human beings who genuinely should have every chance at living life they deserve. there is something inherently wrong in social society that prevents people from being able to live. there are some who wish to commit suicide but cannot because they are more afraid of their children’s/family’s/friend’s lives than their own lives. this is another extremely big and undressed problem, because there are so so many people suffering from depression.
we can’t just blame it on cyber bullying and call it a day. it’s a much more serious problem than that, because not everyone dies from being cyber bullied. not everyone is dying from being bullied. some people are dying because of economic reasons, family problems, traumatic events, you name it. we need to be helping each and everyone in some possible way, whether it be by just trying to extend a hand to those who need it, or focusing on bettering mental health care.
there needs to be something done, and me being frustrated and heartbroken after hearing about suicides won’t be enough. awareness is not just enough, but it’s an amazing step towards a goal. we need to start taking some sort of action, and fast, because suicide is the tenth most common way people die in america. (after a list of 1-9 being health-related death, like cancer, diabetes, etc that are also very important)
if you know someone needs help, be compassionate, empathetic, and an active listener. provide them with different solutions, like therapy or just being able to sit and talk with them. serious problems like these take time, and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though people are taking the time to actively move towards a society that is more accepting, aware, and inclusive of people who are struggling within.
we need to care, and we need to start caring faster if there is meant to be a way to help those who need help. please read this

I think a lot of people forget that Namjoon is so young. He was 19 internationally when they debuted. He is only a year older than Jimin and Taehyung and the maknae of the hyung line. At 19 he carried the hopes and dreams of six other boys and a company close to bankruptcy and it’s easy to cringe at 2013 Namjoon. He tried too hard, he made mistakes, he did expensive girl, his hair was stupid, and named himself Rap Monster! But 2013 Namjoon was also the one who was hungry for success, who lived diligently, produced music, wrote lyrics, and pushed forward despite an entire industry and underground artists he once respected insulting and degrading him and his brothers. 2013 Namjoon was desperate and terrified to show the world his heart and soul, and the layers peeled back revealed the kindest and wisest soul. So I love 2013 Namjoon. I love him to bits. I love his stupid hair, his sunglasses, his try hard attitude, his cringey, terrible mistakes, because 2013 Namjoon is what made 2019 Namjoon. He carried the weight of the world on his shoulders and turned it into a beautiful strength.

Just Jin Things
It’s our worldwide handsome’s turn,
Kim Seokjin, 김석진
04.12.92, Sagittarius
Jin was attending Konkuk University, majoring in Film and Acting when he was scouted by a casting director due to his looks.
He officially signed on with BigHit in 2011
Jin joined BigHit with the intention of becoming an actor but BigHit convinced him to take singing & dancing lessons to join BTS
Before joining BigHit, Jin was supposedly going to work at his father’s company
During their first ever MCOUNTDOWN performance, Jin has a wardrobe malfunction where his pants fell & he cried after the performance (please he did so well I’m so proud, did I go back and rewatch all their performance? Yes I did & my heart swells with so much pride no matter how many times I rewatch the performance.)
He has an older brother
Recently he opened a restaurant with his brother
Previously, SM Entertainment attempted to scout him as well but he assumed it was a joke so he ignored it.
Despite being a trainee & even after debuting, Jin attended university and graduated in 2017
He’s currently enrolled in Hanyang Cyber University, pursuing his Masters
Pink was his favorite color but recently he said his favorite color is blue (mine too!)
Shoulder gangster (literally translated from Hangul)
He revealed that his shoulders are 60cm
That pic of his shoulder while he was in the kitchen (everyone say thank you BTS)
Jin’s legendary pink flip phone
EATJIN (Honestly when I watch EatJin it takes me a moment to realize that I ended up watching a grown ass man eat & chat for 25 mins which seemed like 5 mins)
He’s a really good cook
Always cooks for his members on their birthdays
His favorite food is lobster & meat
While they were at Saipan, BTS ordered 10 lobsters & on top of that, Jin ordered 10 more lobsters and went to each of the staff’s table to share the lobsters with them
Such an angel
According to BTS, Jin has the best body among them (did y’all see the fansite picture of him during one of the concerts where his abs were revealed by accident? You can bet your ass I have a hard copy of it in my pc/lomo card collection.
Super Mario mania, he started playing when he was 5 years old
He instinctively winks at anyone who makes eye contact with him for several seconds
Blowing kisses at anyone & everyone cause he has so much love to spread
His love for alpacas are so cute, SHOUTOUT TO RJ
He can open bags of chips/sweets with his feet
WORLD. WIDE. HANDSOME
His windshield laughter
His Dad jokes (I love Dad jokes too so everytime he says something, my reaction is exactly like Jimin’s)
Chaotic Jin
Q: What’s your good luck charm?
Jin: Yeah it’s my face
“My handsomeness has been entrenched in my life.”
HIS VOICE
OMG PLEASE, I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE PEOPLE SLEPT ON HIM BEFORE EPIPHANY
Like Awake was a fucking masterpiece & his voice is just perfect
STREAM AWAKE & EPIPHANY YOU COWARDS
It’s like every time he performs Epiphany, he only gets better
“When I was younger, my Mum used to just listen to her friends bragging about their sons. She just listened to them without saying anything. So I thought I want to make my Mum be proud of her son too.”
That clip of Jungkook joining him during EatJin & he makes wailing noises while eating & listening to songs
And Namjoon barges in to check on the noise (I fucking lost my shit OMG)
He gets scared/startled easily
Omg that Zombie Run Episode I just I feel so bad for laughing but it gets me every time I watch it..ah…Jin & Yoongi left me in tears cause I laughed so much.
Jin has prescription glasses but due to feeling insecure about wearing them, he prefers to use contacts
His cute ‘crooked’ fingers
He can play the guitar and piano
He’s really good at snowboarding as well
Friends with Sandeul
Jin & Yoongi were roommates in their previous dorm but recently Jin has his own room
Bought an apartment estimated to be $1.7M in cash
SAVAGE JIN (Just like many ARMYs I’m convinced he contributes to the lyrics of rap line songs)
“I played these games, someone said “Marry Me” in a chat room. No.”
“Some viewers are asking me “Let me have a bite please” I’m sorry, buy your own food.”
“Aren’t you jealous of everyone coming to the concert?”
“Don’t cut my words while I’m speaking”
Yoongi: I would like to try (playing a game) Jin: Go home and play
I texted Bang PD & said “I look good today” & send him a selfie. He asked. “Are you having fun?” I said I’m having fun because I’m handsome. Bang PD said “Ah that means I won’t have fun.” I didn’t know how to reply to him.
Who is your favorite Hollywood crush? Actress.
Jin: BRAD PITT
WE STAN CONFIDENT KINGS ONLY
The time he cut his fringe in his bathroom all by himself while filming it
Hugs every member before a concert or performance so they won’t be nervous
That arm wave he did just to smack Jungkook’s hand in BV
The only person who can put Yoongi in his place
“Don’t cut my words while I’m speaking”
*Yoongi shows a rough sketch of his BT21 Holly picture*
Jin: Isn’t that the same as mine? *showing a sketch of RJ* Come on you looked at mine!
But they are so cute together, especially in the Zombie episode where both of them were huddled together at a corner
Or how they encouraged each other to dress up in the bandages & coats
Praising the zombie actors for their good method acting
Jin & Namjoon, kinda like the Mum & Dad of the group
I live for their interactions, they are so soft & cute with each other
Their attempts at trying to do a heart together always gets me
That backhug mission where Namjoon willingly helped him by hugging him and resting his head on Jin’s shoulders
During a fanmeet Namjoon winked & blew kisses at Jin & he got all flustered & shy
Jimin exposed them with that dating article 😂
NAMJIN
The way he’s so huggable & clingy with Hobie (he’s like that with everyone but especially towards Hobie 💜)
How Hoibe just accepts and has this soft smile at whatever Jin says or does
And joins him at times
Argh Jimin is so soft & whipped for Jin like OMG
Literally, everytime Jin cracks a joke, Jimin bursts out laughing
How Jin acts like the maknae & Jimin just goes along with it
Cuites
These two bring the party & dance moves wherever they go
Taejin dancing & having a good time at GDA
Throwback to Attack on Seok & Tae
They are so sweet & encouraging towards each other
Taejin
God please, these two are gonna be the death of me
They bicker anywhere & everywhere
When Jin does something cute or weird Jungkook has this soft & cute smile while he admire Jin *gif*
It’s so fluffy & cute argh my heart
Bickers with Jin anytime & every time
But you can see how much he loves & adores Jin 💜
He’s so goofy & dorky I love it
The way he tries to hold back his laughter before he completes telling a joke & starts laughing, to a point where his face is red, is hilarious yet so lovable.
How he lets the maknae line tease him and annoy him, joining their shenanigans at times.
Despite everything you can see the amount of love and respect, they have for him.
He’s so full of love & warmth & he’s not afraid to show it or share it
He is so humble, dorky and appreciative of every BTS member, ARMY and everyone in his life
Give this man the love he deserves cause he deserves the world
A/N: Please tell me your thoughts by commenting or sending an ask cause it really means a lot 💜

Boo’s Writing Tips: Dialogue
Hello fellow writers, Boo here!
So I’ve been told that my dialogues are pretty good and I know some of you struggle with that, I thought I might give you some pointers on that aspect.
How do I achieve realistic dialogues?
Ok, so this is pretty tricky, and it takes a lot of practice. For some, it’ll come naturally with just a few exercises, for others a bit longer. But know that no one is perfect and there is always room for improvement.
1. Listen to dialogue
One main source of dialogue inspiration that I use are movies, tv shows, and all sorts of audio based media. I think it also helps tremendously that I watch a lot of Korean and Japanese shows where I see the translation at the bottom which becomes engrained in my mind. I pick up speech patterns, specific words, rhythm…etc.
You must be thinking, “Well I can’t study dialogue like that!” It’s all in your subconscious, I promise you. In no time you’ll notice patterns, and rhythms and incorporate everything in your stories without exactly putting a name to it.
2. Roleplay your characters
Do not think of a character who’s speaking as someone that is external. You put yourself in their shoes and they speak. You’re not looking at them, you’re looking at the world through them. Give them the speech pattern you think fits them. Try to play it out. This comes easier for people who have had, or are still, in roleplay.
3. Read
Literally, read fiction. Like there’s really no other secret to it. I learned a lot from Harry Potter and Percy Jackson so that helped me with my style development. So find some literary work that you’ll enjoy and try to copy it. You’ll find yourself developing your own style the more you work on it.
So this was my little tip post! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to message me via DM or my inbox!
Most importantly, never stop practicing!
Keep being creative,
Boo xx
